  • It's getting to be that time! Before "weeding" flower beds and garden spaces, take a closer look! Most backyard "weeds" have amazing benefits. I absolutely love harvesting dandelion leaf and root and adding to salads and soups/stews. Great digestive aid!

  • Did you know that the first soda was created in the late 1700s as a medicinal tonic?

Soda water, which is essentially carbonated water, was mixed with various herbs and minerals to create a tonic that was believed to have health benefits. However, it wasn't until the late 1800s that soda became a popular beverage, with flavors such as cola and root beer being introduced.

Today, soda is one of the most popular beverages in the world, but it's also associated with numerous health risks, including obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay. It's a reminder that even something as innocuous as a beverage can have a complex and fascinating history, and can have significant impacts on our health and well-being.

  • If you don't recognize this #flower, I'm sure you've heard of it. The #PurpleConeflower or #EchinaceaPurpureaMoench is a popular plant for its immune boosting, anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties. All parts of this plants are edible, but only the flower petals are palatable though, a bit bitter. It's also loaded with antioxidants and although it's been used since the dawn of time to treat many common ailments, there's very little scientific literature to back it up.

It's definitely one plant you'll want to add to your memory banks, because it treats very common injuries and infections we all get. This includes everything from minor cuts to bug bites, to urinary tract infections to the common cold. On top of that some believe it also has a calming effect, which helps with depression.

  • Garlic is a medicinal plant and spice from the Alliaceae family. Garlic is a perennial plant that grows 30 to 90 cm. The flat, blue-gray leaves are up to 15 mm wide. The bulb is surrounded by a white or reddish sheath and consists of the main stem and 5 to 20 stems, from the center of which a stem grows. Trident flowers, white or pink, grow on its top.

  • #Alfalfa is mostly known as feed for livestock, which is why I wasn't surprised to find it growing wild at #WarsingDam in #NorthDakota. It's also super nutritious for us as well and is considered a #SuperFood, because of the high levels of essential nutrients and fiber it provides and it's loaded with powerful #antioxidants.

Because it's so popular as cow or horse feed, many would never guess it blesses us with these beautiful blooms. Every part of the plant above the ground can be eaten or steeped into a tea and the seeds can be ground and mixed in with flour to heighten the nutritional profile.

    #NationalTree
    #PhilippineTrees

Narra was declared in 1934 the national tree of the Philippines. This strong hardwood tree symbolizes strength, durability, endurance, and persistence. It resembles the Filipino spirit specifically the strength of character as the Filipinos struggled to attain freedom and independence.
Many uses of its wood include musical instruments, cartwheels, flooring, carvings, furniture, house columns, and decoratives. It has also medicinal value as it is used for treatment against bladder issues, prickly heat, syphilis, headaches, diarrhea, boils, ulcers, and mouth sores.
As an environmental benefit, aside from providing shade and protection against erosion, it is a rich source of pollen for bees to produce honey.
The narra tree is scarce now and so there are efforts to do tree planting in strategic areas. If it really is a must to cut down a narra tree, you need a special permit for that although sadly many constructors and illegal loggers don't mind following the process.
How can we help? The Department of Environment and Natural Resources provides free narra seedlings. You can simply include tree planting among your social and environmental projects. Trees can save lives!

  • What MineYourMind didn't mention in his post earlier today is that we were at #WarsingDam in #NorthDakota when he found that medicinal wonder. To stay with the theme, here's a #BeautifulSkies shot I took while we were there.

The free campsite we stayed at there was just outside of a small agricultural town. The #park was quite small too, but the RV spots were on a huge patch of mowed grass with the reservoir right in front of us, like beach front property. It was large enough for me to take the dogs out and get them all nice and tired, so they would hunker for the night in the RV.

As you can see the landscape in middle North Dakota is quite a bit more flat that the Western portion. Compare this to the photos I've shared of the #BurningCoalVein area.

  • The #WoodRose or #Rosawoodsii is not only beautiful, but can be a friend if you know it's uses. I came across this beauty in @NorthDakota, so it has a wide range for cultivation and can be found most anywhere in #NorthernAmerica. The young leaf shoots and flower petals can be eaten raw or steeped into a tea. All parts of this plant has a use medicinally and as an edible as well.

The leaves can also be chewed into a poultice to relieve muscle aches, as well as for minor cuts, bites and even as an antifungal. The roots and inner bark have been used to treat the flu and diarrhea. The fruit is used to ease your cough, it has an unusually high levels of fatty acids and has possible promise as an antitumoral. The list goes on and I hope to have wet your whistle, so you start to check out the local plants in your area. You'll be amazed at the free medicine available to you for free.

It is #NaturalMedicines like these that we need to know about, so we don't allow the #PharmaceuticalCompanies takes the properties of these natural miracles and patent them, forcing us to pay an arm and a leg to get these compounds through them. It's also why we cannot let our #government give them too much power by banning many of these substances their natural forms, taking away more of our independence.

  • Would you have guessed this beautiful specimen was a pea? It most certainly is! It's a #WhitePea or #Lathyrus sativus L. It's not your normal cultivated variety, but is edible and beneficial. All parts of the Pea plant are edible, though you will want to eat it as a side dish, not the main course and not often. While it is both #edible and #medicinal, if you consume too much it can cause neurological issues that could lead to paralysis of the lower limbs.

The good news is that in moderate quantities it's actually great for your brain and it's being studied as a possible treatment for Alzheimer's and hypoxia. As a matter of fact it may help neuroreceptors responsible for memory to enjoy a longer life cycle. It's also exceptionally high in protein and fiber.

The best part is that they are super hardy and work with the enzymes in the soil to help maximize the nitrogen around them. For this reason they are also called green manure, because they are almost as beneficial when tilled into the soil. They could go a long way towards helping agriculture cut down on the chemical fertilizers they use. They used to do this back in the day, which is probably the reason I found them in abundance where I did.

These were found in the #NebraskaSandhills where I've been spending a lot of time lately. The #Sandhills soils are not great for crops and are essential to filter the waters that fill the #OgallallaAquifer, which lays beneath them. Because of this they are used to free range cattle and the White Pea as well as other varieties of native Peas and Vetches are a great source of feed for them. I'll bet #Ranchers in the early days sowed these throughout the sandhills for their livestock.

  • This was the first time I've seen this beauty and it obviously caught my attention right away. It is in the Daisy Family, so each petal is actually a separate flower. I found this one while #boondocking at the #MerrittReservoirSRA in the #Nebraska #Sandhills. The Sandhills have a cool make-up, because it resembles both rolling #Prairy and a High desert rolled into one.

The #IndianBlanketFlower or #GaillardiaPulchella goes by many names, my favorite being 'Firewheel'. The only parts of the #Firewheel considered #edible are the seeds, which can be dried and ground into a seed butter. That being said, it's the oil of the plant itself from all the parts that have #medicinal properties.

Traditionally it was used by #NativeAmericans to treat tender nipples from breastfeeding and taken internally as a tea for urinary tract issues. A scientific analysis of the oil show it may be used to treat parasites, has #antitumoral properties, it's cytotoxic meaning it may kill living cells(a good thing when treating cancers) and shows promise as a natural antioxidant, according to The Journal of Oleo Science.

It's native to the #Midwest and the Kiowa Tribe consider it to be a sign of good luck. They are choice for #pollinators like bees and butterflies and make for a beautiful ornamental landscaping flower. It's also #Oklahoma's #StateFlower. I think the next time we are out there I'll have AlphaHippie harvest some for the seeds. Then we'll start them with the rest of the plants we cultivate in our #garden each Spring.

  • This is the #SwampRoseMallow or #HibiscusMoscheutos. I was lucky to happen across this beauty, because it was growing along a lake shore I have been walking for nearly 10 years and had never seen it there before. This particular year the water levels were quite a bit higher than normal, allowing for the conditions she needed to grow. This was my first time coming across this family of flower in the wild before and was quite excited when I saw it. I now wish I had the foresight to take more photos of it though.

All parts of this plants are edible with a mild flavor and each has it's own medicinal uses as well. The flower itself, which spans a good 6-8 inches in diameter can be used topically for its anti-inflammatory and antihistamine properties. The leaves when budding or young can be eating either raw, cooked or even steeped into a #tea. This is used to sooth your cough and sore throats and some digestive issues as well.

The stems can be made into a tea as well and has been used traditionally to treat #UrinaryTractInfections. The seeds are edible as well and after maturing and turning dark brown they can be used to make a tea or roasted to be used as a naturally decaffeinated coffee substitute.

  • Hey there SoMee, for my first post I'd like to introduce myself.

My username MineYourMind stands for trusting yourself and the knowledge you've acquired. Most of us forget the bulk of what we've learned throughout life, so as time passes, most of the answers to our questions already exist within us. You just need to know how to retrieve it.

I'm a forager who prefers to live off the land, rather than contribute to the #ConsumerEconomy. While not an expert, I carry my camera wherever I go to catch everything that crosses my path, so I can learn about them later.

I'll be sharing information about the medicinal/edible plants and fungi I encounter in the hopes to help others realize that Mother Nature provides all we need, whether it be shelter, food, entertainment or medicine. As a lifelong student and student of life, this also helps me to implant the information into my own brain as well.

Just think, there are so many in the Western World and elsewhere who are going hungry right now needlessly. This wouldn't be the case if foraging and mycology were taught in schools and I think it's time we begin to teach our kids the old ways again, so they don't have to rely on a corrupt #CentralAuthority for their needs or permission to get medicines they may require. It's all right there for free.

Nice to meet you and thank you so much AlphaHippie and notconvinced for introducing me to SoMee, helping me get set up and showing me how to dabble in the #cryptomarket.
