A federal judge earlier this month rejected a request by California-based Upside Foods for a preliminary injunction against Florida’s new law banning the manufacture, distribution and sale of “cultivated,” or lab-grown meat.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the ban into law on May 1, making it a second-degree misdemeanor to produce or sell lab-grown meat in the state. The law took effect in July.

Upside Foods, which makes cultivated chicken, sued Florida in August, alleging the ban is unconstitutional and violates two federal laws that preempt Florida from imposing the ban.

A preliminary injunction is typically issued in a lawsuit if the court finds the plaintiff has a good chance of winning its case — a “substantial likelihood of success on the merits,” However, Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker said Upside’s argument, which boiled down to “if it’s a poultry product, states can’t ban it,” was insufficient.

Just because a product falls within the scope of the federal Poultry Products Inspection Act and is under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) regulatory authority does not mean a state is “expressly preempted from banning the sale of that particular kind of poultry product,” Walker wrote.

Upside argued that the ban imposed ingredient and manufacturing requirements that clashed with provisions of the Poultry Products Inspection Act. However, Walker said Upside was unable to identify any federal law or regulation that created an “ingredient requirement” for cultivated meat. He also said that because the company didn’t produce its lab-grown meat in Florida, the manufacturing ban didn’t affect its premises, operations or facilities.

The ruling means the ban will remain in place while the lawsuit challenging its legality moves through the courts.

“We are not surprised by the judge’s rejection of Upside’s preliminary injunction,” Florida Sen. Jay Collins, who co-sponsored the original bill, told The Defender. “The dangers of cultivated meat far outweigh any misleading environmental claims. Floridians will not be lectured by billionaires like Bill Gates on how to feed their families.”

Upside’s attorney, Suranjen Sen from the Institute for Justice, said in a press release that the company plans to appeal the decision and is “confident that the courts will ultimately recognize that Florida cannot ban products simply to protect local industries from honest competition.”

A bench trial is set for Monday, Aug. 18, 2025.

    Upside struggled to become profitable

Lab-grown or cultivated meat is produced from cultured stem cells taken from live animals or an animal cell bank and then reproduced in bioreactors using techniques borrowed from Big Pharma.

The cells are “fed” a mixture of sugars, amino and fatty acids, salts and vitamins to make them proliferate quickly. Once they’ve grown into a mass or a sheet — depending on the manufacturer — they are formed into meat-looking shapes like cutlets or nuggets.

Although the companies promote lab-grown meat in part by claiming it has environmental benefits, the process is energy-intensive. Research from the University of California, Davis, found that cultured meat’s environmental impact is likely “orders of magnitude” higher than real meat, based on current production methods.

Attorney Ray Flores, who worked in the natural health industry for 35 years, told The Defender that even if it provides environmental benefits, “Any environmental benefit is greatly outweighed by the possible dangers that these cutting-edge products may pose to one’s health.”

An investigation by The New York Times revealed several incidents during the development of some of Upside’s products that raised safety concerns. The company in 2018 found its chicken cell line contaminated with mouse cells. And in 2019, the cell line was found to be contaminated with rat cells.

Yet, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Upside’s meat was safe for human consumption in 2022, and the USDA approved the sale of products by Upside Foods and Good Meat — the first two companies to go through the regulatory approval process — in June 2023.

That approval made the U.S. the second country in the world, behind Singapore, to allow sales of lab-grown meat. In January, Israel green-lighted the sale of steaks made from cultivated beef cells, The Associated Press reported.

Since the USDA approval, however, Upside has struggled to become profitable.

Upside doesn’t have products available in stores. Partnerships with restaurants are primarily how the company gets its products to consumers.

It had sold its lab-grown chicken to one restaurant in Miami and was planning to showcase it at Miami’s Art Basel event before the ban took effect, according to the judgment.

However, Crunchbase reported that the company halted its plans to develop a major facility in Glenview, Illinois, and restaurants that had tried it out have since pulled it from their menus. San Francisco Michelin-star restaurant Bar Crenn, its final sale venue, confirmed it was pulling the lab-grown meat from the menu in February.

In the original complaint, Upside and the Institute for Justice claim that the “growing patchwork of conflicting state laws governing cultivated meat” makes it more difficult for Upside to partner with national meat distributors “who generally will not carry products they cannot lawfully sell in every state.”

It also makes it more difficult for them to partner with restaurants. If not for the ban, they said, they would be reaching out to several restaurants to create partnerships.

Following the Florida ban, Upside laid off 26 workers.

More states move to ban lab-grown meat, federal regulators eye labeling requirements

A few weeks after Florida passed its bill, Alabama passed a similar law making the manufacture, sale or distribution of food products made from cultured animal cells a Class C misdemeanor, with fines ranging from $100 to $10,000.

Iowa’s governor in May signed a bill prohibiting schools from buying lab-grown meat products and requiring clear labeling for lab-grown meats sold in other venues.

Five other states have proposed similar laws. And in August, Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen signed an executive order banning the state government from purchasing it.

The USDA and the FDA share regulatory responsibility for cultivated meat products. Under the Biden administration’s 2022 plan to advance biotechnology and biomanufacturing innovation, the USDA also announced plans to issue draft guidance on the pre-approval consultation process and the agencies plan to propose rules for labeling cell-cultured meat and poultry sometime in 2024.

Palestinians will not be allowed to return to homes in northern Gaza, says Israeli military

Israeli ground forces are getting closer to “the complete evacuation” of northern Gaza and residents will not be allowed to return home, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has said, in what appears to be the first official acknowledgment from Israel it is systematically removing Palestinians from the area.

In a media briefing on Tuesday night, the IDF Brig Gen Itzik Cohen told Israeli reporters that since troops had been forced to enter some areas twice, such as Jabaliya camp, “there is no intention of allowing the residents of the northern Gaza Strip to return to their homes”.

He added that humanitarian aid would be allowed to “regularly” enter the south of the territory but not the north, since there are “no more civilians left”.

International humanitarian law experts have said that such actions would amount to the war crimes of forcible transfer and the use of food as a weapon.

Israeli Strike on Home in Northern Gaza Kills 25, Including 13 Children

An Israeli strike on a home in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza, killed at least 25 Palestinians, including 13 children, the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported on Tuesday.

Medical sources told WAFA that people are still missing under the rubble, meaning the death toll could rise. Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, the director of the nearby Kamal Adwan Hospital, which has come under repeated Israeli attacks, said the home that was targeted was sheltering several displaced Palestinian families.

According to The Associated Press, Israel claimed it targeted a weapons storage facility but, as usual, offered no evidence for the claim.

Israel dropped over 85,000 tons of bombs inside Gaza since start of genocide

The Israeli military has dropped more than 85,000 tons of bombs inside the besieged Gaza Strip since the start of the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza in October 2023, according to a statement by the Palestinian Environment Quality Authority.

Palestinian officials say the continuous bombing “has caused the destruction of vast areas of agricultural land and contaminated soil with toxic chemicals, which will hinder agriculture in the enclave for decades.”

Furthermore, the officials say Israeli attacks have caused significant damage to Gaza’s water sources, “causing polluted water to seep into groundwater basins, [posing] a health and environmental crisis that endangers hundreds of thousands of residents for future generations.”

Earlier this year, the UN warned that removing tens of millions of tons of rubble left in the aftermath of Israel’s bombardment could take 15 years and cost between $500-600 million. Moreover, rebuilding destroyed homes could take at least until 2040.

In economic terms, the UN Conference on Trade and Development said in a report released last month that if the war ends soon and Gaza returns to the status quo before 7 October 2023, it could take 350 years for its economy to return to its precarious prewar level.

Israel signs $5.2B deal to acquire advanced F-15 fighter jets

Israel, which continues to strike both Gaza and Lebanon, announced signing a deal to purchase 25 next generation F-15 fighter jets from US aviation giant Boeing.

In a statement, the Defense Ministry said the agreement, signed on Wednesday, is part of a broader aid package approved by the US administration and Congress earlier this year and includes an option for 25 additional aircraft.

The jets will be “equipped with cutting-edge weapon systems” and integrated with advanced Israeli technologies, the statement said.

According to the ministry, the upgraded aircraft will help the air force “maintain its strategic superiority in addressing current and future challenges in the Middle East.”

Delivery of the aircraft will begin in 2031, with four to six aircraft to be supplied annually.

New criminal probe alleges Netanyahu tried to make discussions of the war “untraceable”

Israeli police are investigating “criminal incidents” reportedly linked to meetings held by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet at the start of the war on Gaza in October last year, Israeli media reported on 5 November.

“The police’s Lahav 433 investigation unit is conducting a criminal probe related to incidents from the start of the war, including several open investigations,” a police statement said, adding that further details remain under gag order and are barred from publication.

The Times of Israel added that reports appearing in Hebrew media earlier this year claimed that Netanyahu had been “attempting to keep his conversations regarding the management of the war in Gaza untraceable.”

Senior figures in the security establishment allegedly fear that efforts were being made to edit the minutes of wartime discussions held with Netanyahu after discovering discrepancies between transcripts of the meetings and what officials in attendance had heard first-hand.

Knesset Passes Law to Deport Relatives of Resistance Fighters for Up to 20 Years

Israel’s Knesset approved a bill on Wednesday to allow the deportation of relatives of resistance fighters (their word: “terrorists”) from Israel for up to 20 years. A temporary five-year provision was also passed, enabling the imprisonment of minors under 14 years of age who are convicted of homicide as part of a terror act.

It was proposed by Likud lawmaker Hanoch Milwidsky, and states that family members may be deported by the Interior Minister to to Gaza “or another destination determined by the circumstances” if it is found that they “knew in advance of the [so-called] terrorist’s plan and did not take necessary measures to prevent it.”

The interior minister would also have the authority to deport a relative who “expressed support or sympathy for the act of [so-called] terrorism or published praise, admiration, or encouragement.” A decision on the deportation will be made after a hearing.

The law, which was fast-tracked, is considered extreme, and the Attorney General’s office did not issue an opinion on it after a representative claimed that despite the Attorney General’s request, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s position on the matter was not submitted.

The law applies to the immediate family of [so-called] terrorists: parents, siblings, children, and spouses. Israeli citizens who meet the criteria will be deported for at least seven years and up to 15 years. Non-citizen deportees will face a minimum of 10 years and up to 20 years. Additionally, the police will have the authority to enforce deportations, “including the power to enter any premises, remove individuals, and use reasonable force.”

NOTE: The use of the word “terrorist” for a group that resists occupation and oppression is a political, not fact-based choice. In reality, international law supports the efforts of resistance groups against an occupying power, the UN extending that right to the point of armed resistance. Hamas has clearly and openly stated that its enemy is not the Jewish people, but the supremacist ideology of Zionism – the ideology under which Israel dispossessed 750,000 Palestinian people and exiled them to Gaza and other locations.

UN signals to Israel: Replacing UNRWA would be your responsibility

The United Nations responded to Israel’s decision to cut ties with the Palestinian relief agency (UNRWA), by saying it has no responsibility to replace the agency’s operations in Gaza and the West Bank, signalling it was Israel’s problem as the occupying power, according to a letter excerpt seen by Reuters.

Under a new law, Israel ended a 1967 cooperation agreement with UNRWA that covered the protection, movement and diplomatic immunity of the Agency. The law will also ban UNRWA’s operations in Israel from late January. UNRWA has said that its operations in Gaza and the West Bank are now at risk of collapse.

“I would note, as a general point, that it is not our responsibility to replace UNRWA, nor do we have the capacity to do so,” UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres’ chef de cabinet, Courtenay Rattray, wrote to a senior Israeli foreign affairs official late on Tuesday.

The mention of responsibility is a veiled reference to Israel’s obligations as an occupying power.

The UN views Gaza and the West Bank as Israeli-occupied territory. International humanitarian law requires an occupying power to agree to relief programs for people in need and to facilitate them “by all the means at its disposal” and ensure food, medical care, hygiene and public health standards.

NOTE: According to the Congressional Research Service, UNRWA’s budget for 2023 alone was $1.47 billion.

Israeli Settler Kills Palestinian, Israeli Forces Kill Another

Israeli forces killed a Palestinian man, on Wednesday night, injured several citizens and abducted others, during a prolonged military assault on the northern West Bank city of Jenin and its refugee camp.

The Palestinian Health Ministry announced that the citizen, Abdullah Mohammad Saeed Saadi, 53, succumbed to a critical gunshot wound inflicted on him by occupation forces.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said that its ambulance crews transported a critically injured citizen to hospital for treatment, while sources at the Ibn Sina Hospital said that they received a seriously injured man who was shot in the thigh, later announcing his death.

The PRCS added that occupation forces shot Saadi with three live rounds while he was in the “Hursh Al-Sa’ada” neighborhood in the western part of Jenin city.

On Wednesday afternoon, an Israeli colonizer killed a Palestinian man after an alleged car-ramming attempt near the illegal “Shilo” colony, built on citizens’ lands northeast of Ramallah in the central occupied West Bank.

The General Authority of Civil Affairs informed the Palestinian Health Ministry that the young man, Harith Khaled Abdullah Jabara, 32, succumbed to critical gunshot wounds during an alleged car-ramming attempt.

The Health Ministry announced that occupation forces shot Jabara after his vehicle crashed at the entrance to the “Shilo” settlement, near the town of Turmus Ayya, injuring two Israeli colonizers.

Israeli media reported that two Israeli settlers sustained minor injuries, while an armed colonizer shot and killed the suspect after he exited his vehicle.

Since the beginning of the Israeli military onslaught against the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, Israeli forces have killed 777 Palestinians in the West Bank, including 167 children, and injured 6,300.

Election: In Dearborn, Rashida Tlaib Did Nearly Twice as Well as Kamala Harris

Harris refused to distance herself from the Biden administration’s support of Israel’s war on Gaza. Tlaib railed against it.

Voters in the biggest U.S. city with an Arab-majority population shifted decisively toward Donald Trump on Tuesday, in a stinging rebuke of the Biden administration’s policies in the Middle East.

Trump claimed 43 percent of the vote in Dearborn, Michigan, to Kamala Harris’s 36 percent. Jill Stein claimed 15 percent of the vote in the city, where the Green Party had notched less than 1 percent in 2020.

Trump’s margin of victory in Dearborn represents a massive reversal from the 2020 election, when Joe Biden won 69 percent to Trump’s 30.

The huge shift toward Trump will not be decisive in a race where he cruised to a Electoral College victory without the help of Michigan, the state with the highest percentage of Arab Americans. The state had yet to be called Wednesday morning.

Still, it was a telling sign of how completely the administration has lost Arab Americans over the war.

Down-ballot results suggest that the move was motivated in large part by anger toward the Biden administration rather than dissatisfaction with Democratic policies overall.

Letter to U of Minnesota admin protesting suspension of students for protesting Gaza War

    Dear President Cunningham and Colleagues:

We write on behalf of the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA) and its Committee on Academic Freedom to express our concern about the decision of the administration of the University of Minnesota (UMN) to indefinitely suspend eight students who participated in an occupation of a university building, Morrill Hall, on 21 October 2024.

Whatever one thinks of the students’ action, we regard the university’s decision to bar them from classes, dormitories, dining halls and campus jobs as an unduly harsh sanction that violates their rights to education and sustenance.

The fact that this sanction was imposed without the students having had the opportunity to defend their actions in a properly conducted disciplinary process makes it all the more egregious.

The university’s actions in this regard seem aimed at deterring students from exercising the dictates of their conscience on matters of urgent public concern. They also contravene the University of Minnesota’s laudable tradition of countenancing contentious student protests…

These data are supported by independent analyses, comparing changes in the number of deaths of UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) staff with those reported by the Ministry, which found claims of data fabrication implausible.]

This is expected to be a significant undercount since thousands of those killed have yet to be identified – and at least 778 in the West Bank (~166 children). This does not include an estimated 10,000 more in Gaza still buried under rubble (4,900 women and children).

In July 2024, the Lancet said: “Applying a conservative estimate of four indirect deaths per one direct death to the 37,396 deaths reported, it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186,000 or even more deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza.

Ralph Nader earlier estimated 300,000 Palestinians may have been killed in Gaza.

At least 45 Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons (27 from Gaza, 25 from West Bank).
At least 41 Palestinians have died due to malnutrition (at least 37 of them children)**.
About 1.9 million of Gaza’s 2.3 million population are currently displaced.
Almost 500,000 Gazans are currently experiencing catastrophic levels of food insecurity.
Palestinian injuries from October 7 – November 6, 2024: at least 108,647 (including at least 102,347 in Gaza and 6,300 in the West Bank, including 830 children). [It remains unknown how many Americans are among the casualties in Gaza.]

Reported Israeli death toll from October 7, 2023 – November 6, 2024: ~1,574 (~1,139 on October 7, 2023, of which ~32 were Americans, and ~36 were children); 396*** military forces since the ground invasion began in Gaza (most recent: Nov 2); 39 military and civilians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Israel) and~10,000 injured.

The death toll in Lebanon since October 8, 2023 is at least 3,050, with 13,658 injuries. An estimated 1.34 million have been displaced.

NOTE: It is unknown at this time how many of the deaths and injuries of Israelis on October 7 were caused by Israeli soldiers.

*Previously, IAK did not include 471 Gazans killed in the Al Ahli hospital blast since the source of the projectile was being disputed. However, given that much evidence points to Israel as the culprit, Israel had previously bombed the hospital and has attacked many others, Israel is prohibiting outside experts from investigating the scene, and since the UN and other agencies are including the deaths from the attack in their cumulative totals, if Americans knew is now also doing so.

**Euro-Med Monitor reports that Gaza’s elderly are dying at an alarmingly high rate. The majority die at home and are buried either close to their residences or in makeshift graves dispersed across the Strip. There are currently more than 140 such cemeteries. Additionally, according to Euromed, thousands have died from starvation, malnourishment, and inadequate medical care; these are considered indirect victims as they were not registered in hospitals.

***The figure does not include the reportedly 56 Israeli soldiers – nearly 16% of the total Israeli military deaths – killed due to friendly fire in Gaza and other military-related accidents.

† For most of the conflict, women and children accounted for about 70% of deaths in Gaza, with children making up a little over 40% of those killed, according to official statistics.

(Read the full article here.) Israeli Strike on Home in Northern Gaza Kills 25, Including 13 Children An Israeli strike on a home in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza, killed at least 25 Palestinians, including 13 children, the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported on Tuesday. Palestinian officials say the continuous bombing “has caused the destruction of vast areas of agricultural land and contaminated soil with toxic chemicals, which will hinder agriculture in the enclave for decades.” Furthermore, the officials say Israeli attacks have caused significant damage to Gaza’s water sources, “causing polluted water to seep into groundwater basins, [posing] a health and environmental crisis that endangers hundreds of thousands of residents for future generations.” Earlier this year, the UN warned that removing tens of millions of tons of rubble left in the aftermath of Israel’s bombardment could take 15 years and cost between $500-600 million. According to the ministry, the upgraded aircraft will help the air force “maintain its strategic superiority in addressing current and future challenges in the Middle East.” Delivery of the aircraft will begin in 2031, with four to six aircraft to be supplied annually. The Times of Israel added that reports appearing in Hebrew media earlier this year claimed that Netanyahu had been “attempting to keep his conversations regarding the management of the war in Gaza untraceable.” Senior figures in the security establishment allegedly fear that efforts were being made to edit the minutes of wartime discussions held with Netanyahu after discovering discrepancies between transcripts of the meetings and what officials in attendance had heard first-hand. A temporary five-year provision was also passed, enabling the imprisonment of minors under 14 years of age who are convicted of homicide as part of a terror act. It was proposed by Likud lawmaker Hanoch Milwidsky, and states that family members may be deported by the Interior Minister to to Gaza “or another destination determined by the circumstances” if it is found that they “knew in advance of the [so-called] terrorist’s plan and did not take necessary measures to prevent it.” The interior minister would also have the authority to deport a relative who “expressed support or sympathy for the act of [so-called] terrorism or published praise, admiration, or encouragement.” A decision on the deportation will be made after a hearing. Additionally, the police will have the authority to enforce deportations, “including the power to enter any premises, remove individuals, and use reasonable force.” NOTE: The use of the word “terrorist” for a group that resists occupation and oppression is a political, not fact-based choice. [Mostafa Alkharouf – Anadolu Agency] (Mostafa Alkharouf – Anadolu Agency) UN signals to Israel: Replacing UNRWA would be your responsibility The United Nations responded to Israel’s decision to cut ties with the Palestinian relief agency (UNRWA), by saying it has no responsibility to replace the agency’s operations in Gaza and the West Bank, signalling it was Israel’s problem as the occupying power, according to a letter excerpt seen by Reuters. Letter to U of Minnesota admin protesting suspension of students for protesting Gaza War Dear President Cunningham and Colleagues: We write on behalf of the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA) and its Committee on Academic Freedom to express our concern about the decision of the administration of the University of Minnesota (UMN) to indefinitely suspend eight students who participated in an occupation of a university building, Morrill Hall, on 21 October 2024. They also contravene the University of Minnesota’s laudable tradition of countenancing contentious student protests… (Read the full letter here.) Ukraine and Israel: Two Stalinist Remnants:

We’re going to blow up the world for this?

By Richard C. Cook, Co-Founder and Lead Analyst, American Geopolitical Institute. Author, Our Country, Then and Now (Clarity Press, 2023)

    September 20, 2024

    Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill:

Toward the end of World War II, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin were the two most powerful men in the world.

It was the Soviet Union’s Red Army under Stalin that brought final defeat to the German Wehrmacht and had taken over almost all of Eastern Europe. Held back by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill from launching its assault on France until D-Day, the U.S. Army nevertheless advanced to meet the Soviets at the Elbe River just west of Berlin.

Roosevelt was no friend of Churchill. Roosevelt saw the British Empire as a relic of history to be gotten rid of as soon as possible, with Britain soon being forced to grant independence to most of its colonies, including the imperial crown jewel of India.

Roosevelt and Stalin were as close to being friends as two such dissimilar figures could be. We know that Roosevelt’s administration was heavily staffed by Soviet sympathizers. Through Lend-Lease, the U.S. had quietly aided the building of the Soviet military machine so that it would be ready for Hitler’s Operation Barbarossa invasion in June 1941.

Then in June1944 at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, less than a month after D-Day, Roosevelt’s negotiators succeeded in making the U.S. dollar the world’s predominant currency, displacing the British pound.

At the Yalta Conference in February 1945, not only did Roosevelt agree to meet on Stalin’s home turf in Crimea, but he also gave de facto recognition to the Soviet Union’s occupation of Eastern Europe, though Stalin did promise elections that were never held. Another agreement at Yalta was to create the United Nations, where the Soviet Union was given a seat on the Security Council of equal status with the U.S., Britain, France, and Nationalist China. (In China, the government of Chiang Kai-Shek was overthrown by Mao’s communists in 1949.)

Meanwhile, all Churchill could do was watch and fume. This had not been the plan. Churchill had every reason to hope that when Germany invaded the Soviet Union, the two totalitarian nations would destroy each other. Now Stalin stood like a colossus over half of Europe. And Roosevelt was going along.

Truman, Britain, and the National Security State

Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945, two months after Yalta and a month before V-E day. Now Harry S. Truman, a virtual unknown on the world stage, was president. In what was a virtual palace coup, the pro-British forces within the administration took over.

Truman was a cipher who first obeyed instructions in dropping the A-bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945. Before he became president, Truman had not even been told about the Manhattan Project to develop the bomb.

The purpose was not to force Japan to surrender—the Japanese were already prostate. Rather it was much more likely to warn and intimidate the Soviet Union. (After the war, a faction within the U.S. military wanted to nuke the Soviet Union immediately.)

Over the next three years, Truman enacted all of the measures needed to create what became the permanent National Security State, including formal establishment of the CIA through the National Security Act of 1947. But what many historians view as the start of the Cold War and U.S./British disengagement from the Soviets as erstwhile World War II allies, was Churchill’s famous “Iron Curtain” speech of March 5, 1946, in Fulton, Missouri.

It was also the British who took the lead in prevailing on the U.S. to fund the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe, including West Germany, starting in 1948 and in bringing NATO into existence as an anti-Soviet alliance in April 1949. Finally, in June 1950 came the start of the Korean War, with armed conflict between the West and the Communist Bloc now the focal point of worldwide geopolitical affairs from then on.

Stalin’s Reaction and the Creation of Ukraine

Stalin reacted to the U.S./British actions with near-panic. Elections in the occupied Eastern European nations were cancelled, with single-party governments under the various national communist parties installed. These were backed by Red Army occupational forces. Yugoslavia also became a communist state allied with the Soviets under wartime leader Josip Broz Tito. In Greece, a communist uprising led to civil war from 1946-1949, leading there to a pro-Western government but an armed conflict nonetheless, one that left Greece in ruins.

In reaction to NATO, the Soviets created their own alliance, the Warsaw Pact, fully in place by 1955. The Warsaw Pact was a collective defense treaty established by the Soviet Union and seven other Soviet satellite states in Central and Eastern Europe: Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland and Romania.

The Soviets had already incorporated a tier of states along its western border that formerly had varying degrees of independence. These became “republics” within the overall framework of the USSR, including the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to the north, Belorussia, or White Russia, further south, followed by the vast region of Ukraine, then the smaller entity of Moldova. These were all countries that became independent after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990-1991.

The most problematic of these newly-formed nations was Ukraine, cobbled together by the Soviets from 1922 to 1954 from various antecedents, including the original Russian homeland around the one-time capital of Kiev. Much of eastern Ukraine consisted of lands conquered by Catherine the Great and peopled with ethnic Russians. In February 1954, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union transferred the Crimean Peninsula from the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

This was a measure said to be taken by Soviet Premier Khrushchev for “administrative” purposes. What it would later mean was that the giant Soviet Black Sea naval base at Sevastopol would be part of Ukraine when it gained its independence in 1991. Crimea would stay that way until Russia re-annexed it after the 2014 Maidan coup.

Ukraine also was home to large numbers of Jews, who, along with Russians, Poles, and Belarusians, were subjected to massacres during World War II. Jews of Ukraine and Poland carried out large migrations to America, then to Israel, in the late 19th-20th centuries, lasting in Israel to the 1990s. As examples, many of the leaders of the Neocon faction within the U.S. are descendants of Ukrainian Jews, as is the Illinois Priztker family that is prominent in Democratic Party politics.

In Western Ukraine are large numbers of people of Romanian, Hungarian, Polish, and other extractions, many becoming Soviet citizens only with the post-World War II redrawing of the map when Ukraine itself became a confusing mixture of nationalities, ethnicities, and religions.

    The Ukrainian Mess

After the fall of the Soviet Union and the emergence of an independent Ukraine, Ukraine quickly became a mess.

The various factions within what was now one of the largest and most heavily industrialized parts of Europe, along with a rich agricultural heartland, competed for dominance. This included Neo-Nazis left over from collaboration with Germany.

The lines of conflict were drawn partly along the lines of pro-Russian vs. pro-Western influences. In fact, from the very end of World War II, Western intelligence services were at work in Ukraine, trying to swing the country in their favor.

The West seemed to gain the upper hand through the U.S.-sponsored “Maidan” coup in 2014, leading to the creation of today’s regime. After 2014, with NATO arming and training the Ukrainian military, the situation soon devolved into an assault on the eastern Russian-speaking provinces, the Donbas.

Russia responded by invading Ukraine in its February 2022 Special Military Operation. The West came to the Ukrainian government’s aid with weapons, funding, and anti-Russian sanctions, all to no avail as Russia’s industrialized military machine is now close to defeating Ukraine’s forces. The West also suppressed any Ukrainian interest in negotiating with Russia.

Vlodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, is Jewish and has said he wants Ukraine to become “the ‘big Israel’ with its own face.” Under his presidency, over 100,000 Ukrainians, mainly gentiles, have died in the war. Persecutions against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church have become common.

The question now is whether Ukraine and its Western sponsors will accept defeat and move to a settlement with Russia based on agreement that what is left of Ukraine will stay out of NATO as a demilitarized neutral state, or whether Ukraine’s backers, mainly in Britain and the U.S., will go off the deep end and continue provoking Russia until a hot nuclear war results in Europe or beyond.

The Soviet Role in Creating Israel

I have no intention of reprising the entire history of Israel here. I will touch on the pertinent highlights, but I will add that I do not believe in concepts such as the “Chosen People,” etc. which I view as totally imaginary. I believe that every human being on the planet is divine in their essence, though it is up to each of us to develop that potential, and that helpers have been sent, some of whom have lived in a mortal form, to assist. For more on this topic, See here.

I do not believe that an individual’s worth derives from his or her race, religion, nationality, level of education or income, social or occupational rank, or popularity. I believe one’s worth derives solely from one’s deeds. Thus a person who appears inconspicuous or unknown may objectively be worth more than a president, general, movie star, media personage, or billionaire.

Nor do I believe that past wrongs to my ancestors give me the right to exact retribution from others. I have Anglo-Saxon ancestors whose lands were stolen by the Normans in 1066. Do I have a right to attack the present King of England? I have Native American ancestors of whom millions died at the hands of European invaders. Do I have a right now to steal the property of these invaders’ descendants? I also have Jewish relations through my extended family, and I am glad that so many Jews have found their own “Promised Land” in America. I don’t expect any payback for that.

I am also very familiar with the history of the Zionist movement but wish to point out that it was the British during the 19th century who first came up with the idea of declaring Palestine a Jewish homeland. This was before Jewish Zionism even existed. The purpose was to gain control of the southern terminus of the “Mackinder Line,” extending from the Baltic Sea to the Levantine Coast, in order to have dominion over the Eurasian heartland. For more on this history, See here.

The Zionist movement picked up speed after the British government’s Balfour Declaration of 1917 promised Palestine as a Jewish homeland. Britain obtained Palestine as a League of Nations “mandate” after the Treaty of Versailles brought World War I to an end.

The problem then for the Zionist leaders was that Jews did not want to move to Palestine. Conditions were not great for farming, there were no jobs, and the indigenous Arab population did not want them. So during the 1930s, particularly with the worldwide economic slowdown, the Zionist project was looking at failure.

In particular, American Jews, who had assimilated peacefully and happily in large numbers had virtually no interest in moving to Palestine, though some were willing to donate money to help European Jews who might emigrate. But even then, most European Jews who wanted to leave Europe were going to America. (When Hitler came to power he made an agreement with Zionist leaders to aid Jews in emigrating to Palestine.)

Then came World War II, during which large numbers of European Jews lost their lives. Note, however, that within the Soviet Union, far more Christians than Jews had lost their lives during and after the Bolshevik Revolution that was largely run by Jews. See here.

At some point toward the end of World War II, the decision was made for an army of Jews to travel from the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe to seize Palestine from its Arab inhabitants and establish the state of Israel. Because there were so few Jews remaining in Western Europe or living in America who wanted to move to Israel, those in charge resorted to scouring the refugee camps of Eastern Europe to find individuals who could literally be drafted and forced to go. See here.

The invading Jews first fought against the British who were still holding Palestine as a mandate, now under the UN, then seized the lands of the Arab occupants, massacred thousands, and drove 700,000 off their land into refugee camps. This is called the Nakba. It has been going on ever since but became much worse after the events of October 7, 2023.

    A hypothesis

I now want to present a hypothesis, knowing it is just that—a hypothesis.

We know that at some point in the early history of the Soviet Union, Stalin decided to purge that element of the original Bolsheviks and their successors who favored worldwide revolution. One name for this faction was the “Trotskyites.” Trotsky himself, a Jewish leader of the Bolsheviks, was assassinated, presumably at Stalin’s direction, in Mexico in 1940. He had been expelled from the Soviet Union in 1929. During the period between the revolution and Trotsky’s assassination, the influence of radical Jews in the Soviet government gradually declined. (Trotsky did become a mentor to a faction of Jews in the U.S. who later became part of the Necons.)

Also, in order to defeat Germany in World War II, the Soviets had to tap the deepest recesses of Russian national tradition, emotion, and inner strength. Russia became Russia once again, leading to the extraordinary development of science, scholarship, military prowess, and technology that has continued until today.

But the radical Jews had remained a revolutionary force. My hypothesis is that because Stalin still wanted to get rid of them, when the dust settled from World War II, he decided to send them to Israel. They went, not as migrants, but as conquerors.

It seems true that the most violent and extreme elements of the Israeli leadership have been Russian and East European Jews. The Soviet government assisted these people in getting to Israel and in drafting recruits from the refugee camps. They were also armed with weapons from the Czech munition plants then under the control of the Red Army. None of this could have been done without Stalin’s approval.

The Soviet Union was the first country to recognize Israel in 1948. This was followed quickly by the U.S., with Truman being the recipient of large wads of cash from American Jews for his presidential campaign that year. See here.

Nor did Stalin send them to become a Soviet fifth column in the Middle East. Israel quickly aligned itself with Britain, France, and the U.S., while the Soviet Union became partial to Nasser in Egypt and other anti-Western elements in the Arab world. The Non-Aligned Movement the Soviets supported drew heavily on these elements.

    That’s the hypothesis.

Fast forwarding to recent years, no less an authority than former Marine and UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter has said that when he visited Israel in the 1990s, society there was moving toward a peaceful accommodation with the Palestinians that would eventually lead to the so-called “two-state solution.” Ritter says what then happened was that a new influx of Jews from Russia arrived on the scene with what seems to me the same kind of violent intolerance shown by the original terrorists who created Israel in the first place.

Ritter’s commentary is compelling. It was these new arrivals who began to take over the Israeli government and who are now the driving force in Netanyahu’s reactionary coalition that has conducted the Gaza/West Bank genocide and is agitating for an expanded war, starting with a conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. This could readily escalate into a broader war involving the U.S. and Iran or a worse conflict with Russia, Iran’s ally.

The positive side, at least for Russia, is that Russia may now have rid itself entirely of its violent Jewish partisans. Russia has also gotten rid of or disciplined those Jewish oligarchs who took part in the looting of Russia in the 1990s. The Jews who have remained appear to be loyal, productive, law-abiding citizens who enjoy good relations with the Russian government.

    Conclusion

World War III now threatens on two fronts—Ukraine and Israel. In both places, powerful forces are trying to draw the U.S. and the West into much larger conflagrations. In both places, a radical Jewish faction lurks behind the chaos—Zelensky’s government in Ukraine and Netanyahu’s in Israel.

But both conflicts can be seen as Stalinist remnants of World War II.

Why should the unfinished business of a long-dead Soviet dictator be allowed to determine the fate of the world today? Why can’t reasonable people from all sides now come together to repair these long-

simmering tragedies so that the world can move ahead in peace, cooperation, and understanding?

Ukraine and Israel: Two Stalinist Remnants: We’re going to blow up the world for this? By Richard C. Cook, Co-Founder and Lead Analyst, American Geopolitical Institute. Author, Our Country, Then and Now (Clarity Press, 2023) September 20, 2024 Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill: Toward the end of World War II, U.S. (In China, the government of Chiang Kai-Shek was overthrown by Mao’s communists in 1949.) Meanwhile, all Churchill could do was watch and fume. This had not been the plan. Churchill had every reason to hope that when Germany invaded the Soviet Union, the two totalitarian nations would destroy each other. Now Stalin stood like a colossus over half of Europe. And Roosevelt was going along. Truman, Britain, and the National Security State Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945, two months after Yalta and a month before V-E day. (After the war, a faction within the U.S. military wanted to nuke the Soviet Union immediately.) Over the next three years, Truman enacted all of the measures needed to create what became the permanent National Security State, including formal establishment of the CIA through the National Security Act of 1947. Stalin’s Reaction and the Creation of Ukraine Stalin reacted to the U.S./British actions with near-panic. • A Khazarian terrorist who deserved to be hanged before he died (Part VI) | VT Foreign Policy
    July 8, 2022
    …by Jonas E. Alexis

In the 1960s, it was widely reported that “heroin began flowing into the United States from Southeast Asia in body bags returning from the war, courtesy of the CIA.”[1] During the same time, John Lennon declared that “We must always remember to thank the CIA and the Army for LSD…They invented the LSD to control people, and what they did was give us freedom.”[2] Virtually all the intellectuals, gurus, drug addicts, and even musicians of the counterrevolution agreed with Lennon.

Timothy Leary, who believed that he was Aleister Crowley reborn, said: “The LSD movement was started by the CIA. I wouldn’t be here now without the foresight of CIA scientists.”[3] Allen Ginsberg acknowledged: “Am I, Allen Ginsberg, the product of one of the CIA’s lamentable, ill-advised, or triumphantly successful experiments in mind control? Had they, by conscious plan or inadvertent Pandora’s Box, let loose the whole LSD fad on the US and the world?”[4] Ginsberg, like Ken Kesey, was part of the “successful experiment” the CIA was conducting in the 1950s and 60s.

Kesey was studying creative writing at Stanford when he first took LSD in 1959. When Menlo Park Veterans Administration Hospital offered to give mind-altering drugs to volunteers, Kesey couldn’t be more excited: he quickly put his name on the dotted line. His drug trip at the hospital was an epiphany. In order to test his experiment further, he took a job at the same hospital and spread the gospel of LSD to his comrades. Stephen Kinzer writes that Kesey’s home “turned into a twenty-four-hour psychedelic party as friends and neighbors got high and danced to loud music, electric rock music.”[5]

Under the influence of LSD, Kesey got enough material for his new novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the book which ultimately became a bestseller. “With the money he earned from royalties, Kesey bought a new home and began throwing ‘acid tests’ at which he served LSD to a wild roster of guests including poets, musicians, and bikers from the Hells Angels gang…Kesey gave LSD a new role in American society.”[6]

    MK-Ultra

Leary, Kesey, Ginsberg, Aldous Huxley, Robert Hunter of the Grateful Dead, among others, were all the product of MK-Ultra, a secret program which the CIA brought about through one man, Sidney Gottlieb, who actually was “the Government chemist who dosed Americans with psychedelics in the name of national security.”[7] Under the director of Allen Dulles, both the CIA and Gottlieb deliberately spread LSD virtually everywhere during the 1950s and 60s in order to control people.

In fact, Dulles explicitly declared that one of the main purposes for developing MK-Ultra was to control people,[8] particularly mental patients, prisoners (from Japan, Korea, Germany), and drug addicts, prostitutes, and even children.[9] As they put it, these people “could not fight back.”[10] What was the false pretense that the CIA and Gottlieb used to dose these people? In the name of “science” and “patriotism,” they were trying to find a cure for schizophrenia. One patient in particular “was dosed with LSD continuously for 174 days” in Kentucky. Other patients went mad, others had to suffer psychological damage for the rest of their lives, and others ended up dead because of the diabolical experiment.[11] And between 1953 and 1963 oligarchic institutions like Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Stanford, Columbia University, Cornell, etc., all supported MK-Ultra—directly or indirectly.[12] Other institutions such as “Massachusetts General Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, the Universities of Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Denver, Illinois, Oklahoma, Rochester, Texas and Indiana as well as Berkeley, Harvard, Columbia, MIT, Stanford, Baylor, Emory, George Washington, Vanderbilt, Cornell, John Hopkins New York University” were all involved in MK-Ultra.[13]

Kinzer calls Gottlieb “the most powerful unknown American of the 20th century—unless there was someone else who conducted brutal experiments across three continents and had a license to kill issued by the U.S. government.”[14] Hunter, who himself experimented with the drug at Stanford under the auspices of the CIA[15] and who got hypnotized by the drug, eventually came to the conclusion that “the United States government was in a way responsible for creating the ‘acid tests’ and the Grateful Dead, and thereby the whole psychedelic counterculture.”[16]

Like Agave in Euripides’ The Bacchae, Hunter eventually realized that he was duped. His moral integrity had awakened, and he eventually realized that he was a guinea pig in a social experiment. But for him and others, it was already too late. An entire culture and indeed a nation were hooked on a drug that was hatched by a man whose diabolical plan was to control much of humanity. That man again was none other than Jewish revolutionary Sidney Gottlieb. John Marks, a sympathizer, declared that if one used the Nuremberg standards, Gottlieb would have been executed on the spot precisely because he did the same thing that the Nazis were allegedly doing.[17]

Gottlieb was aptly called “the Black Sorcerer.”[18] He was a scientist at the US Army’s laboratory at Fort Detrick, Maryland, and was specifically assigned by the CIA to create a lethal toxin that would allow the CIA to not only manipulate people at will but to assassinate perceived enemies and dissidents.

Gottlieb also had a plan to upgrade the social engineering that was part of the CIA’s program in the United States. He wanted to see how individual behavior could be altered via drugs, most specifically through LSD and other powerful psychoactive drugs. According to Kinzer, the CIA and the psychological warfare program called this “a new era of humane warfare.”[19]

Gottlieb joined the CIA in 1951, and he quickly created the poison that they wanted. No, he did not invent LSD; the man responsible for concocting the drug was Albert Hofmann, a Swiss chemist and author who synthesized the drug with ergot and other supplements in November of 1938. Hoffman also wrote the book LSD: My Problem Child. It was indeed his problem child, for Hoffman tried the drug on himself and, like Aleister Crowley, discovered something powerful. After absorbing the drug, he said that he felt

“a remarkable restlessness, combined with a slight dizziness. At home I lay down and sank into a not unpleasant intoxicated-like condition, characterized by an extremely stimulated imagination. In a dreamlike state, with eyes closed (I found the daylight to be unpleasantly glaring), I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colors. After some two hours this condition faded away…. I see the true importance of LSD in the possibility of providing material aid to meditation aimed at the mystical experience of a deeper, comprehensive reality.”[20]

This “mystical experience” was again felt by Crowley and a host of black magicians over the centuries.

How does the drug work? Simple: “After receiving the toxin orally or by pinprick, a victim first feels a tingling sensation in the fingers and lips and dies ten seconds later from a painless paralysis.”[21]

Gottlieb, throughout his life, was never prosecuted for his crime. He was protected by the CIA, oligarchic institutions, and the elite. If there was one person who deserved to be hanged before he died, then that person should have been Sidney Gottlieb.
