  • ‘Declaration of war’: Amman warns against displacement of Palestinians to Jordan
    Friday, 06 September 2024 6:54 AM [ Last Update: Friday, 06 September 2024 7:08 AM ]

Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has warned that any Israeli attempt to displace Palestinians from the occupied West Bank to Jordan will be considered a "declaration of war."

Safadi’s remarks in a joint press conference with his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock in Amman came as the forcible displacement of Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza to Jordan and Egypt, respectively, has been an Israeli goal for decades.

Referring to Israel’s largest incursion in the occupied West Bank in about two decades, Jordan’s top diplomat said “Israel is waging another war”, amid the regime's ongoing war on the Gaza Strip.

He noted that the tensions in the West Bank could lead to a wider war in the region.

The Israeli regime’s forces have killed and abused a 16-year-old Palestinian in the north of the occupied West Bank.
Safadi noted that Amman is preparing a legal file regarding the Israeli incursions into holy sites in occupied al-Quds, describing such raids as “playing with fire that will burn the entire region.”

On August 13, Israel’s hawkish minister Itamar Ben-Gvir led hundreds of settlers into al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the occupied East al-Quds.

During his recent provocative visit, Ben-Gvir said that it was his “policy” to allow Jewish prayers on the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, Islam’s third-holiest site where only Muslims are allowed to pray under a status quo arrangement originally reached more than a century ago.

Ben-Gvir later revealed his intention to build a Jewish synagogue inside the al-Aqsa Mosque compound. He said that if he could, he would build a synagogue on the al-Asqa Mosque complex.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Safadi urged the international community to take action to stop the escalation of the situation in the West Bank and the region.

The minister added that Israeli actions on the ground have killed all opportunities for achieving a just peace.

“Stopping the aggression on Gaza and the escalation in the West Bank” is “the first step to prevent the situation in the region from worsening further.”

Safadi emphasized Jordan’s support for a prisoner swap deal between Israel and the Palestinian resistance movement, blaming Netanyahu for obstructing its completion as he “changed his positions and backed out of his commitments”.

US President Biden recently accused Netanyahu of not doing enough to secure ceasefire deal with Palestinian resistance groups in Gaza
Since the start of Israel’s aggression on Gaza, the West Bank has also seen a rise in violence from Israeli forces and settlers that claimed the lives of hundreds of Palestinians.

The Israeli army launched its largest incursion into the northern West Bank in two decades on August 28, killing dozens of Palestinians so far.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, at least 691 Palestinians have been killed and more than 5,700 others injured by Israeli troops since October 7.

  • ICC taunted with ‘atomic bomb’ analogy over Netanyahu arrest warrant
    Friday, 06 September 2024 9:40 AM [ Last Update: Friday, 06 September 2024 10:18 AM ]

The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has defended his move to issue arrest warrants for Israeli officials over their war crimes in Gaza, saying that he had been "cautioned" by several leaders about the decision.

Karim Khan said he had received warnings from several countries and authorities that arrest warrants for Israeli officials would be an “atomic bomb,” according to his interview with BBC, which was released on its website on Thursday and is also set to be broadcast on Saturday.

He said that some world leaders had pressured him not to issue warrants to arrest Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and minister of military affairs Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

“Several leaders and others told me and advised me and cautioned me,” he said in the interview which will be broadcast on Saturday.

Back in May, Khan issued the warrants, saying there were reasonable grounds to believe Netanyahu and Gallant bear criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip.

The pair, he added, were suspected of crimes including starvation of civilians as a method of warfare, murder, intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population, and extermination.

However, the request for the warrants must yet be approved by ICC judges.

US, UK, Germany striving to block ICC arrest warrant for Netanyahu, says report
The US, the UK, Germany, and dozens of organizations and countries are trying to block an ICC arrest warrant for Netanyahu, a report says.
Also in his interview, the ICC chief prosecutor stressed that it was necessary to show that all sides will be held to the same standard in relation to war crimes.

“You can't have one approach for countries where there's support, whether it's NATO support, European support [and] powerful countries behind you, and a different approach where you have clear jurisdiction," he expounded.

“We need to apply the law in a way that is equal, because if we don’t, and importantly if we’re not seen to, we’re going to lose all the architecture, not just the ICC, that has been built on human suffering since Nuremberg,” added Khan.

Asked whether his move to issue arrest warrants for the Israeli officials was a political decision rather than a legal one, Khan responded, “What we’re doing is the antithesis of politics, it’s about the equal application of the law irrespective of whether one receives a round of applause from some quarters or a deafening din of condemnation from the other.”

He further rejected the accusations of anti-Semitism leveled at him by Netanyahu, saying that “there’s not an ounce, not a jot, not a scintilla of truth in the charge.”

“Our job is to apply the law and not to be dissuaded by these cheap shots or criticisms that manifestly are false,” he asserted.

Israel launched its brutal Gaza onslaught on October 7, 2023, after the Hamas resistance group carried out a surprise operation against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

So far, the occupying regime has killed at least 40,878 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 94,454 others.

A group of protesters from the City University of New York (CUNY) Gaza Solidarity Encampment is demanding that the "unjust" heavy charges against eight of their members be dropped.

The 28 protesters, known as the CUNY 28, made the call in a statement issued at their press conference outside Manhattan criminal court where eight of them pleaded not guilty to an array of charges on Thursday.

The 28 protesters were among those arrested during a raid by New York Police Department on the CUNY Gaza solidarity encampment on April 30.

“The CUNY 28, attempted to answer the call made by the steadfast Palestinian resistance to escalate from within the belly of the beast. We resist with Gaza,” the statement said.

“The night of the CUNY raid, ‘public safety’ brutalized protesters. CUNY ‘public safety’ are the pigs! The pigs are the IOF! Anyone that chooses to play the role of a pig is the enemy,” it added.

According to CUNY for Palestine, while the charges have been dropped for most of the hundreds of people arrested late in April, "Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, CUNY, and the NYPD continue to pursue the heaviest charges for 8 of the now CUNY 28.”

The eight are accused of allegedly causing millions of dollars worth of damages.

“We are fighting our charges, not only because we do not recognize the state’s claim to authority over our actions, but also because we believe that challenging these charges is a necessary stand against an unjust system that seeks to silence dissent and criminalize resistance. It is hypocritical of the state to criminalize property damage at a protest, while signing lucrative contracts to destroy entire communities,” the CUNY 28 said.

“As the Zionist entity continues its destruction of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank—and as the United States maintains its genocidal hegemony from Palestine to Harlem—the working-class people of the world escalate. An encampment should not normalize the institution—it should disrupt it, dismantle it and abolish it.”

The statement slammed CUNY administrations for remaining silent on Israel’s ongoing genocidal war on Gaza and “actively repressing and condemning” any support for the Palestinians.

“The occupation of buildings by students and outside agitators symbolizes reclaiming space and disrupting normal operations to draw attention to injustices and to force institutions to address the demands of protesters.”

The statement stressed “We are not just fighting for a Free Palestine but for the liberation of all. We fight for ourselves and our communities. Palestine is everywhere.”

“Remember, 'we are all outside agitators.' Whether we are fighting in Atlanta, New York City, Sudan, or Palestine, the enemy remains the same. The Zionist entity escalates, so does the Palestinian Resistance. The pigs and institutions escalate, so do the agitators of the world!”

The group stressed, “We will not be intimidated into silence by the state.”

Pro-Palestinian activists have called on the Canadian government to adhere to its legal and humanitarian obligations and halt "all arms sales to Israel."
Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network has voiced its “full” solidarity with the CUNY 28, urging the authorities to drop the charges.

“Escalating to end a genocide is not a crime — indeed, it is a duty, particularly in the heart of the imperial core, at a moment when the resistance forces of the region, from Palestine to Yemen to Lebanon to Iraq and beyond, are on the front lines sacrificing and fighting for the protection and liberation of humanity.”

The Pro-Palestine demonstrations began at Columbia University in New York City on April 17 and spread across other campuses in the US in a student movement unlike any other this century.

The protesters, who demanded an end to the US-backed war, which has so far killed at least 40,878 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 94,454 others, were met with brutal police violence.

Israel launched the war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas waged the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in response to the Israeli regime's decades-long campaign of bloodletting and devastation against Palestinians.

Noting that “CUNY agitators spent more time in custody than Columbia protesters, and are still facing higher charges and continued backlash”, the CUNY 28 said, “The narrative of ‘good’ vs. ‘bad’ protester is a narrative pushed by the state to divide our efforts along class and racial contentions, but in reality the fight against the same enemy unites us.”
