‘An entirely preventable disaster’: Health officials warn of catastrophic polio epidemic in Gaza Tareq S. (Photo: Omar Ashtawy, APA Images) Sewage water is flowing in most of the streets of the Gaza Strip. Mountains of garbage are piling up next to crowded refugee camps and shelters. In some areas of the strip, children can be found rummaging through the piles of trash in search of food or scraps that their family can use. Due to Israel’s targeting and destruction of Gaza’s water and sewage networks, millions of Palestinians in the crowded Strip have nowhere to dispose of waste other than the street. And with the total collapse of municipal and sanitation services, there is no one to collect the waste. The sanitation workers who try to reach the dumps near the border to dispose of waste are targeted by the Israeli military. The families who live in tents near the piles of garbage and waste have to worry about more than just the putrid smells of hot, rotting garbage. For months the Gaza Ministry of Health and other international public health agencies have warned of the spread of diseases due to the lack of clean water and untreated sewage in the streets. In mid-July, in cooperation with the World Health Organization, the Gaza health ministry conducted an analysis of samples of sewage water in the Gaza Strip, and found the presence of poliomyelitis, or as it is more commonly known, the polio virus. The highly infectious disease, which in severe cases can cause paralysis or death, was eradicated in Gaza more than 25 years ago. The detection of the virus in July caused the health ministry and the WHO to set off the alarm bells. The ministry declared a ‘polio epidemic’ in the Gaza Strip, and the WHO called for immediate intervention to prevent the spread of the disease. Though the Gaza health ministry has not yet announced any cases of polio in the population, doctors and health officials in Gaza say action must be taken before it’s too late. Dr. Jamal al-Homs, Director of the Kuwait Specialized Hospital in Rafah, says that there has been a significant and noticeable increase in various epidemic diseases that are now spreading rapidly throughout the Gaza Strip. “Today, the polio virus has returned due to the lack of a proper sewage system, the lack of clean and potable water, and the lack of the possibility of general hygiene due to the accumulation of garbage and the inability of citizens to maintain general hygiene,” he told Mondoweiss.. Al-Homs stressed that if the polio disease spreads in Gaza, there will be no way to stop it under the current conditions. (Photo: Omar Ashtawy/ APA Images) Dr. Ahmad Al-Farra, the head of the pediatric department at the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, told Mondoweiss that the majority of diseases that children contract are caused by the spread of viruses among displaced families in the refugee tent camps. In theory, polio, which affects the spinal cord and brainstem causing paralysis and difficulty breathing, “would find a suitable and hospitable environment to spread in the crowded tent camps,” al-Farra said. “If one of the individuals is infected, the spread of the disease will be swift due to the severe crowding and sharing of public toilets among the displaced,” he said. “The solutions lie in personal hygiene and the use of soap, alcohol, and sterilizers,” al-Farra said. “But the Israeli occupation prevents the entry of these materials, and the fuel that is needed to operate the sewage treatment facilities.” “The samples [collected by the MOH] showed polio type 2, which must be prevented by intramuscular vaccination,” he continued. And while limited polio vaccines are available for newborns in some parts of Gaza, al-Farra said that the necessary vaccines to treat polio type 2 aren’t available due to the lack of electricity, which prevents hospitals and health facilities from storing the vaccine at the correct temperature. “The health situation in the Gaza Strip is catastrophic,” al-Farra said. ‘We all have diseases that we don’t know about’ Next to mountains of garbage in the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis, Mustafa Abu Luli, 53, sits underneath a tarp with his family. The family of five were displaced from Rafah to Khan Younis, and have been living in a tent for months. Every single member of the family suffers from some kind of skin disease or rash. “We all have diseases that we do not know about and cannot find treatment for,” Al-Luli told Mondoweiss, holding up his sons one by one, revealing their bare bellies and backs, covered with bumps and rashes. “Our women have also been infected with hepatitis before, and are still suffering from the effects of the disease.” As he spoke, Abu Luli pointed to the piles of garbage amassed next to the family’s tent. “This is the source of the diseases we are suffering from. We all have serious diseases and cannot find treatment. We tried and failed. All these diseases are due to the lack of water and cleanliness. But there is nothing we can do. We have nothing,” he said. Next to Abu Luli’s tent, children walk on the mountains of garbage and dig for scraps. Anything could be useful: something that can be used to light a fire so their family can cook food; or maybe some scraps of food if they are desperate. (Photo: APA Images) According to residents, they are surrounded by flies and other bugs, as well as wild dogs that come into the camps in search of food or drink. “All the causes of death are available to us in the Gaza Strip. The piles of garbage are a disease, the lack of water is a disease, the tent is a disease, everything here causes diseases,” Abu Luli lamented. “The heat and the sun are diseases, the mosquitoes and flies are a disease, the dogs that attack our tents at night are a disease. Not to mention the bombing and destruction.” “We are terrified of the spread of polio, especially since we are close to the sewage where they discovered the disease. Our children go there when they pass from one place to another or from one street to another. They can’t avoid it, because the sewage is spread everywhere” Abu Luli said. “If this disease spreads, we will die without anyone looking at us. If it infects someone in my family, they will die because we will not find a cure.” According to doctors and public health experts, a host of preventable diseases and infections are already running rampant in Gaza, and with a barely-functioning health system, most people, like Abu Luli’s family, can’t get basic treatment. “We notice many serious skin diseases coming to us from the displaced families, and there is no treatment for them,” Dr. al-Homs told Mondoweiss. “Due to the problematic health conditions and catastrophic living conditions in light of the lack of treatments and the closure of crossings, it is expected that these diseases and the number of those infected with them will increase and thus represent a significant threat to citizens,” he said. “The World Health Organization has reported tens of thousands of cases of lice and scabies,” Dr. Yara M. Asi, a Palestinian public health expert and the co-director of the Palestine Program for Health and Human Rights, told Mondoweiss. “Thousands of cases of rashes that have spread very easily among children that are clustered together. Over half of the population has reported respiratory infections. There are very high reports of acute diarrhea, which for children under five can be quite lethal. There are tens of thousands of cases of jaundice,” she continued. “These are easily treatable conditions. The tragic tragic part of this is that, by themselves, none of these need to lead to a health emergency. And yet the conditions that Israel has created and enabled will cause significant unnecessary suffering, disability, and death for people,,” Asi said. “Largely because there is no capacity for people to receive care from advanced traumatic injuries like amputations, let alone something as basic as lice.” Immediate intervention needed to prevent disaster Following the news that the poliovirus was detected in the sewage water in Gaza, Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the organization would send more than a million doses of the polio vaccine to Gaza and distribute them over the coming weeks to prevent children from being infected. Ghebreyesus stated in an opinion piece in the British newspaper The Guardian, “Although no polio has been recorded so far, without immediate action, it will only be a matter of time before thousands of children become infected and become unprotected.” Ghebreyesus wrote that children under the age of five are most at risk of contracting this virus, especially infants under the age of two, due to the disruption of regular vaccination campaigns as a result of the conflict that has been ongoing for nine months. “Polio is almost entirely preventable with vaccinations. That’s part of what’s so devastating about this,” Asi told Mondoweiss. “This is completely predictable, completely avoidable.” According to Asi, prior to October 7th, Palestinian vaccination rates for polio across the occupied territories, including the Gaza Strip, was about 99%. Since October 7th, with the decimation of the healthcare system, and the birth of thousands of babies who have been unvaccinated, that number has plummeted to about 86%. “This is incredibly low. We have thousands of children missing all sorts of routine vaccinations,” she said. And while no cases of polio have been reported yet in Gaza, Asi warned that doesn’t necessarily mean no cases exist. “There has been a communication blackout in many parts of Gaza. Many families are completely displaced. They’re not exactly in contact with health authorities. Many hospitals and health clinics are shut down, destroyed, and nonfunctional. So it’s not impossible that there are cases that simply haven’t been reported yet,” she said. “The ramifications of a potential, or at this point, probable polio outbreak in Gaza are multifaceted,” Asi continued. “You have thousands, tens of thousands of babies that have been born since October 7th. We’re already seeing a very high infant mortality rate because of lack of care. These children, many of them are not getting vaccinated. If they contract certain types of polio, they will be paralyzed for life. (Photo: APA Images) Emphasizing the need for a mass vaccination campaign, and for Israel to allow shipments of aid and medicine into Gaza, Asi pointed to the fact that the Israeli military had begun a campaign to offer polio booster vaccines to its soldiers following the news that the virus was detected in Gaza. “The IDF recognizes that this is a problem… they don’t want [their soldiers] to return to Israel and spread polio there,” Asi said. “…And they’re taking care to make sure that their aquifers are protected because a polio outbreak they know is devastating to a population.” “Viruses, as we learned during COVID-19, do not respect borders. So if polio were to spread through people exiting, humanitarian workers or others leaving the territory, it could be carried into Egypt and spread into the rest of the region,” she said. “It’s frankly very terrifying. And that’s why I think the World Health Organization has really sounded the alarm, because it is naive to assume that this will, A, not escalate within Gaza, and B, has no potential to escalate elsewhere.” Highlighting the WHO’s calls for an immediate ceasefire, Asi said that a cessation of hostilities to allow the entry of vaccines and permit health officials to distribute them to the population is the first, and most basic step to address the public health disaster in Gaza. “The problem is we are past the point where a ceasefire alone is going to end suffering for people,” she said. “We will see the ramifications of this for months, years, possibly generations. The spread of disease is not going to stop the day of a ceasefire. We all have our “blind spots” however, myself included. This is not a personal attack against anyone; it is the high road of facts presented in a polite manner. I believe blind spots were first identified by Freud’s protege Carl Jung. Paraphrasing Jung based on my understanding, blind spots are things that you suppress consciously. Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump, with a near-certainty of victory over Joseph Biden, chose J.D. Vance to be his running mate the day after an assassination attempt against him. Vance clearly owes his choice by Trump to his “Israel First” agenda. Iran has become a nuclear counterweight to Israel in the Middle East, with capabilities demonstrated to penetrate the “Iron Dome” with missiles. Vance wants to “punish” Iran with methods that go far beyond the usual bombings. Politico reported that there were “Iranian” plans to assassinate Trump, as if Iran had anything to do with the mental state of a 20-year-old white kid in Pennsylvania or chose to hold a rally at a location with undefended sniper locations in close proximity. Along with the choice of Vance as Trump’s running mate after the assassination attempt, charges of mishandling classified documents were dismissed by a judge in Florida that same day, a dismisssal that received little press despite constant reporting on the charges against Trump earlier. Netanyahu has gone so far as to claim that Israel controls the Congress of the United States, and of course he’s right. How obvious do things have to be? History lessons aside, of all the things that I have heard or read from Sasha, there is only one thing that I really take exception to: she said Dr. Pierre Kory was a “good person.” As far as I can tell, Dr. Kory has killed more patients than any doctor in the world in the name of “COVID” by using ventilators and drugs, and has led an effort to create an alibi for his crimes that Ivermectin cured the virus, when in fact Ivermectin reversed the effects of the deadly protocols used against patients hospitalized with a nonexistent virus. After three years of guerrilla warfare, Castro and his ragtag army descended from the mountains and entered Havana on January 1, 1959, forcing Batista to flee the country. It shows Stugis over a trench dug to hold the bodies of 71 Cubans executed by firing squad. Sturgis had been in the Sierra Maestra mountains for some time. In March 1958, Sturgis opened a training camp in the Sierra Maestra mountains, where he taught Che Guevara and other 26th of July Movement rebel soldiers guerrilla warfare.[15] When Castro seized power, a rebel firing squad on San Juan Hill executed 71 of their opponents on January 11, 1959, into an awaiting 40-foot (12.2 m) ditch that had been opened with a bulldozer. Marita Lorenz, the daughter of a German father and an American mother, was born in Bremen, Germany, on 18th August, 1939. Lorenz visited Cuba in February, 1959. Soon afterwards she began an affair with Fidel Castro and claims to have had his child. Later she was recruited by Frank Sturgis to work for the Central Intelligence Agency. In January 1960, Lorenz took part in a failed attempt to poison Castro. Hundreds of CIA attempts to topple or assassinate Castro always failed. Castro became a Communist boogeyman in the Americas, driving massive amounts of funding to the US Department of Defense to counter the red menace. the former head of Cuban intelligence, Fabian Escalante, told a British documentary team the CIA had tried to kill Fidel Castro more than 600 times, over a period of about 40 years. And of course this island would have been used for drug running. Porter Goss, member of George Bush’s Operation 40 which assassinated JRK, and future CIA Director, was a small boat operator who ran drugs through the islands between South America and Florida. Now the point here isn’t to bash Che either. He has a certain revolutionary sincerity that appeals to many people at times like these when the governments are known to be evil and killing their citizens. Che’s image below is the most reproduced image in history. Revolution is one thing, economic theory is another. At this point I must bore you with some economic theory. Communism is not a failure; communism is intentinally evil. Communism is command and control of an economy. Command and control systems, like the ones used in Germany and the United States in World War 2, can produce tremendous amounts of goods when that’s the goal. Now consider the massive starvation programs in China and the Soviet Union under Communism. In areas that were extremely fertile and could produce massive amounts of food, women in the Soviet Union lined up at stores in hopes for a piece of bread to feed their babies, and they didn’t get it. In college studying Economics shortly before the Berlin Wall fell, Communism versus Capitalism was presented as Capitalism being far superior to Communism based on incentives and rent seeking in free markets. While those things are undoubtedly true, the education never presented the historical context that Communism was designed to fail. It’s not Capitalism versus Communism in my view anymore, it’s Freedom versus Slavery. There is little difference between Capitalistic Monopoly and Communism. In one case, the government controls the means of production, in the other, Corporations control the government. Ernesto was likely recruited by the CIA in 1952 in Miami. HAVANA TIMES — Very little is known about the time Che spent in Miami. There’s not very much to know anyway. An accidental and forced stop, while he was traveling back to Argentina to get his medicine degree. When Che was in Bolivia, he was struck by the extreme poverty and disease of the people. I figure he was trying to divert some of the CIA’s cocaine trafficking profits to the poor people of Bolivia. The CIA’s cocaine trafficking program in Bolivia was led by Klaus Barbie, aka “the Butcher of Lyon,” a Nazi installed in Bolivia at the end of World War 2 in a negotiated merger between the OSS and SS to form the CIA. In the end, Che’s greatest claim to fame is that he wound up eating a bullet. Felix Rodriguez, also of Operation 40, helped Barbie track down and execute Che. The Search Continues For The Lost 1MDB Loot Look no farther than Rosmah’s jewelry box John Berthelsen The wheels of justice grind slowly against the rich and powerful in Malaysia. Eight years after the failure of 1Malaysia Development Bhd with an estimated US$5.4 billion believed siphoned off by senior officials and their associates, investigators are still hunting through the tangle in as many as 40 international jurisdictions, trying to establish a paper trail to prove in court that money allegedly stolen by former Prime Minister Najib Razak, his wife Rosmah Mansor, the fugitive financial architect Low Taek Jho and others came from the government-backed sovereign investment fund, and to recover the missing billions in assets. Without the paper trail, the courts don’t have enough evidence to charge wrongdoers, said the source. “Considering that the transactions took place in as many as 40 different jurisdictions, you can imagine what a nightmare it is to work through the documents,” the source said. A task force comprising as many as 200 lawyers, accountants, and investigators from the Attorney General’s Chambers and other enforcement agencies led by the private firm of Lim Chee Wee Law of Kuala Lumpur are involved in combing through the mountains of files, bank statement, emails, and other evidence. The probe was delayed by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic for several months, and by the delaying tactics of the defendants’ lawyers. The latest shot at recovering some of the astonishing amount of stash stolen by Jho Low, who is still on the run somewhere in China, and the Najibs came on June 4 when Lim Chee Wee Law, representing the 1MDB cadaver, filed a civil action against Rosmah and her Singaporean agent and companion, Shabnam Naraindas Daswani, aka Natasha Mirpuri, seeking the return of an astonishing US$346 million in jewelry, bags and watches allegedly paid for with funds stolen from 1MDB. That may not be all, the source said. The task force is searching for even more. On September 1, 2022, just a week after Najib reported to Kajang Prison to begin serving a 12-year sentence on corruption charges connected to the1MDB scandal, the 72-year-old Rosmah was found guilty of three charges of corruption, sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined RM970 million (US206.2 million) in a separate case having nothing to do with the failed investment concern. Although 22 months have passed since her conviction, she remains free on appeal. Additional cases against Najib, who has already had his sentence cut in half by the parole board, remain to be brought, six years after he was originally arrested. Given the politics of Malaysia at the moment, with Najib’s United Malays National Organization a crucial component propping up Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s coalition government, there are concerns about whether the additional cases will ever be brought. However, the magnitude of the theft, and the spending on luxury items, is breathtaking and might even dwarf the purchases of Rosmah’s Asian sister-in-crime Imelda Marcos of the Philippines, who has also managed to beat the rap. It has been the subject of wide-ranging investigations by both local law enforcement agencies and foreign governmental and law enforcement authorities including those in the United States, Switzerland, and Singapore. In the 242-page civil filing in the commercial division of the High Court in Kuala Lumpur, 1MDB and its ancillary firms, represented by the Lim Chee Wee firm, described a “large-scale, multi-jurisdictional fraud” in which eight different agents registered in offshore jurisdictions made 320 payments totaling US$346,010,489 to 48 different vendors of luxury goods based at least 14 jurisdictions. In 2018, when Najib was arrested, police seized the equivalent of US$273 million worth of loot from his property that filled five trucks with cash in 26 currencies totaling US$28.6 million, 457 handbags worth US$12 million, 423 watches valued at US$19 million, and 234 pairs of sunglasses worth US$93,000. Also included were 1,400 necklaces, 2,200 rings, 2,100 bangles, 2,800 pairs of earrings, 1,600 brooches, and 14 tiaras. In 2022 all of those items were returned to Rosmah when the High Court ruled the Public Prosecutor had failed to establish that offenses had been committed, and thus failed to show that the seized assets had been obtained in relation to the commission of a crime. The plaintiffs are now trying to get them back, along with a catalog of other assets that may well go beyond the US$346 million figure. Given the plethora of jurisdictions, it has proven extremely difficult to ascertain just how much loot was paid for with the stolen funds, much of it routed through two BVI shell companies, Good Star Ltd and Petro Saudi International. Rosmah by Malaysiakini cartoonist Zunar The civil suit describes a bewildering series of sham transfers of funds and loans in amounts up to US$1 billion that passed back and forth between the entities that “were created as part of the various wrongdoers’ design, including Najib Razak and Jho Low,” in one case, for instance “so that US$700 million out of US$1 billion at the 1st Plaintiff (1MDB) would eventually pay as a result of the PSI Joint Venture could be siphoned.” The misappropriation and laundering of the funds “were the result of various breaches of fiduciaries duties and trust by the former directors, executive and senior management, and employees” of 1MDB and its related companies. “In essence, the funds…which were to be utilized for investments in various ventures were instead wrongfully or fraudulently transferred out to entities registered in offshore jurisdictions which had no connection with or served no legitimate purpose in relation to the purported investment objectives of the…plaintiffs.” And where did the money go? In addition to the US$346 million that went to Rosmah’s jewelry in this civil action, the US Department of Justice’s kleptocracy unit, in 2016, as widely reported at the time, seized US$1 billion in assets including penthouses, hotels, condominiums, mansions and other properties in Los Angeles, London and Australia, a US$35 million Bombardier Global 5000 corporate jet and paintings by Claude Monet and Vincent Van Goh. The Justice Department detailing the phenomenal amount of assets accumulated by “Malaysian Official 1” and his spouse included financing for the EMI music publishing house and for Red Granite Productions, headed by Rosmah’s son Riza Aziz by a previous marriage to make movies including the US$100 million 2013 production Wolf of Wall Street. The proceeds of the movies were later seized by the US government. Indonesian President’s Capital Dream in Peril Delays, funding problems, long rumored, become official John Berthelsen The decision on July 9 by Indonesia’s outgoing President Joko Widodo to delay moving his office to Nusantara, his projected national capital 1,300 km across the Java Sea to the jungled island of Borneo this month as planned is an ominous sign that his dream to shift nearly 2 million people from Jakarta to ease congestion could short-circuit at a time when Jakarta is growing increasingly ungovernable. In a statement to local media, the president, who leaves office in October, said he would only authorize the move to the East Kalimantan state when basic facilities such as electricity and clean water are ready. A presidential decree designating the new capital city could be issued before or after October depending on the situation on the ground, he said. But is God going to hear our prayers that His Word shouldn't come to pass...no way. We need to realigne our prayers to fit in with God's undiluted for our time. And that's were many churches missed it... GIVING HOPE WHERE THERE'S NONE. God’s message was one of rebuke, one of censure. As much as to say, "You didn’t bother about Me when things were going well and now you are desperate you are singing out for help." However the prophet's voice met with a favourable response from the people. But it's a far cry from what what God desires from us today... INSTEAD OF OUR REPENTANCE ACCORDING TO THE TERMS OF HIS WORD FOR THE TIMES FOR US...WE WANT GOD TO OBEY US AND DISOBEY HIS OWN HIGHLY PRICED WORD THAT HE HAS REJECTED THIS CURRENT WORLD; But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. (2Pe 3: 10) 12. Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 13. Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. (2Pe 3: 12-13) It's the reason God is looking for courageous people like Gideon who will stand up for His Word and satans deceptive tendencies to divert Man's attention from the worship of God by increased knowledge that's churning out architectural, engineering and mechanical wonders we would consider as impossible centuries past. THE DEVIL'S AIM IS TO CONVINCE MAN THAT THERE'S NO BEAUTIFUL HEAVEN ANYWHERE, AND AIMS TO USE TECHNOLOGY TO BEAUTIFY THIS SIN INFESTED AND BROKEN WORLD....AND THUS RELAX MAN'S MIND THAT WITH ENOUGH MONEY,HE CAN BUILD HIS OWN PARADISE HERE, AND THAT HELL IS WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE MONEY AND YOU ARE SUFFERING. There is one thing I have noticed, and that when God calls men to a task or to give them a message from heaven, He generally calls those who are busy. Busy about their work. Gideon was busy when the angel came. When Christ Jesus called some of the disciples they were busy fishing. Matthew was at the tax table. The Shepherds were minding their flocks. God does not call lazy people. There is too much to be done. God’s workers whether they be ministers or laymen, need to be like Nehemiah who said, "I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down." God desperately needs earnest, consecrated workers in His cause. No doubt that is why the Angel chose to open the conversation with the words, "The LORD is with thee in your brave plans to liberate Israel." Gideon was thinking of the strategies he could apply to set his people free. Today, God has given us everything we need to STAND and challenge the devil, and that's the NAME OF CHRIST JESUS; 9. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 1 10. That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11. And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Php 2: 9-11) In Ephesians 11. Ignorance, Stupidity, or Malice? Rob Jenkins A major topic of conversation at the recent Brownstone retreat was whether the people who locked us down and then mandated an experimental gene therapy, along with their supporters and enablers, were motivated primarily by stupidity or malice. I’d like to propose a third option: ignorance. In my view, all three played a part in the Covid debacle. I believe—I choose to believe—that many of the people who are to some degree responsible for the devastation of the last four years—particularly the millions of Americans who allowed it to happen because they docilely went along—were simply ignorant. They accepted what they were told in March 2020 about the virulence and lethality of the virus. They fell for the fake videos of Chinese citizens keeling over in the streets. They watched in horror as what appeared to be freezer trucks sat parked outside New York hospitals. They assumed the government wouldn’t be sending military hospital ships to New York and Los Angeles if the disease wasn’t ravaging those cities. And they eagerly embraced the notion that, if we all just stayed home for two weeks, we could actually “flatten the curve.” I confess: I fell into this category initially, for about those first two weeks. I’m blessed (or maybe cursed) with a natural skepticism and fortunate to have found, early on, alternative news sources that were reporting the truth—or at least trying to get at it. So I began to suspect, as “two weeks” stretched to infinity, that we were being had. But most Westerners have been conditioned to believe whatever the government and the media tell them, without questioning. Those people bought into the indefinite forced isolation and the social distancing and the Zoom school and the grocery delivery because they were ignorant. They didn’t really understand what was happening. That includes, by the way, many in positions of authority and responsibility, like medical doctors and nurses, teachers and administrators, religious leaders, and local elected officials. Maybe even some elected officials at the national level. They swallowed the official narrative, too. I’m convinced most of these people honestly believed they were doing the right thing, saving lives, when in fact they were doing nothing of the sort because, as we now know, none of those “mitigation strategies” had any effect on the virus. But to be completely fair to them—and I think it’s important to be fair, however angry we might be at the consequences of their behavior—they were acting out of ignorance. Of course, at some point, ignorance begins to bleed over into stupidity—perhaps at the point where people could have known better, and maybe even should have known better. Then their ignorance, which is a legitimate excuse for bad behavior, becomes willful. And willful ignorance is a form of stupidity, which is not an excuse, especially not for those we entrust with important decisions that affect all our lives. The definition of stupidity proposed by UC Berkeley economist Carlo Cipolla in 1976 seems relevant in this context: “A stupid person is one who causes losses to another person or group while deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.” (You can find a nice summary of Cipolla’s theory here.) In other words, stupid people do stupid things for no reason. They harm other people, and they don’t even get anything out of it. They might even harm themselves in the process—“shooting themselves in the foot,” as we sometimes say, or “cutting off their nose to spite their face.” That is indeed the height of stupidity. This definition certainly applies to many, many of the Covidians, including quite a few who (if we want to be generous) started out as merely ignorant. Over time, their perhaps understandable ignorance morphed into stupidity as they held on stubbornly to masking, distancing, and school closures despite literal mountains of evidence that none of those had any salutary effect. And most of them didn’t even benefit from their stubborn, stupid refusal to acknowledge reality. Yes, some did, and we’ll get to them in a moment. But most didn’t. In many cases, they embarrassed themselves, damaged their careers, lost businesses and personal relationships, and for what? So they could yell at the rest of us about masks? That’s pretty stupid. Also instructive here is Cipolla’s Second Law of Stupidity: “The probability that a certain person is stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.” In other words, stupidity, as he defines it, is more or less evenly distributed throughout the population. It has nothing to do with intelligence, education, or income level. There are stupid doctors, lawyers, and college professors, just as there are stupid plumbers and ditch diggers. If anything, the former groups are somewhat more likely to contain stupid people. It all comes down to a person’s willingness to do things that make no sense, things that harm others—aka, stupid things—despite not getting anything out of it and perhaps even losing in the bargain. And then there are the people who actually DO benefit from the harm they cause to others. They exhibit many of the same behaviors as the stupid people, except that they actually get something out of it—money, fame, power. Cipolla refers to these people—those who harm others for their own benefit—as “bandits.” Most of the best-known Covidians, the biggest names in media, government, “public health,” and the pharmaceuticals industry, fall into this category. They initiated, enforced, and supported policies that seemingly made no sense, and they came away smelling like roses. They became the toast of the media circuit, earned cushy sinecures, and expanded their bank accounts by millions. The main difference between stupid people and bandits, according to Cipolla, is that the latter’s actions actually make sense, once you understand what they’re trying to accomplish. If a person knocks you down for no reason—well, that’s just stupid. But if they knock you down and then take your wallet, that makes sense. You understand why they knocked you down, even if you don’t like it any better. Moreover, you can to some degree adjust for the actions of “bandits”—for instance, by staying out of the bad part of town, where someone might knock you down and take your wallet. But if you’re at a mall in a nice suburb, and people are just knocking you down for no apparent reason, there’s no way to plan for that. The problem with stupidity, says Cipolla, is two-fold. First, we consistently “underestimate the number of stupid people in circulation.” We assume the vast majority of people will act rationally under most circumstances, but—as we’ve seen plainly over the last four years—that turns out not to be true. Many behave irrationally much of the time, and it appears that a majority will do so in a time of crisis. Second, as Cipolla points out, the stupid people are if anything more dangerous than the bandits, mostly for the reasons cited above: There are a lot more of them, and it’s nearly impossible to account for them. You can have a perfectly good plan to address some emergency—like, say, a pandemic—and the stupid people will blow it up for no good reason. Sure, malicious bad actors will make off with the treasury, if they can, but that has always been the case. I mean, is anybody really surprised that Albert Bourla added millions to his net worth? Or that Anthony Fauci now has a cushy job teaching at Georgetown? Yes, it’s frustrating and disgusting. There’s no doubt they were among the main architects of this disaster, as well as its main beneficiaries. But none of that is, or was, completely unexpected. Bandits gonna bandit. What has been most frustrating to me over the past couple of years has been the way that millions of otherwise normal people—including friends, relatives and colleagues, as well as store clerks, flight attendants, and random people on the streets—have behaved so stupidly. A surprising number continue to do so, embarrassing themselves by haranguing the rest of us about masks and “vaccines,” alienating everyone in sight, making life more difficult for themselves and others even though they gain nothing by it. So yes, the four-year debacle that is our collective Covid response is attributable in part to ignorance and in part to malice. But worse than either of those, and far more damaging to society in the long term, has been the sheer stupidity—humanity’s capacity for which I will never again underestimate.
