US State Department Approves Over $20 Billion Arms Package for Israel AntiWar reports: On Tuesday, the State Department approved a series of potential weapons sales to Israel worth over $20 billion that includes F-15 fighter jets and tank munitions. The approval comes as Israeli airstrikes continue to slaughter civilians in Gaza, including newborn twins who were killed hours before the State Department announced the new support for Israel. Ha’aretz reports the transaction as “among the most significant arms sales to Israel in American history.” In total, the US announced five new arms deals for Israel. The biggest is for 50 F-15 fighter jets and related equipment, worth $18.8 billion. Israel will also receive $102.5 million in advanced air-to-air missiles, about 33,000 120mm tank cartridges worth $774 million, 50,000 high-explosive 120mm mortar rounds worth $61.1 million, and $583.1 million worth of medium tactical vehicles. It’s unclear how much of the massive weapons sale will be funded by US military aid. The announcement came a few days after the State Department said it was releasing $3.5 billion in military assistance for Israel in the form of Foreign Military Financing, a program that gives foreign governments money to buy US weapons. It will take years before the F-15s and other weapons will be delivered to Israel, although, according to Reuters, the tank rounds would be almost immediately available for delivery. The notification begins a period where Congress could potentially block the sales, but it’s expected to breeze through since only a few dozen progressive Democrats are opposed to arming Israel. The U.S. has sent Israel more than 10,000 highly destructive 2,000-pound bombs and thousands of Hellfire missiles since the start of the Gaza war in October, U.S. officials told Reuters in June. The two babies were born on Saturday in the city of Deir al-Balah, but an Israeli strike on their apartment shattered the family’s joy of their newborns. “I have just obtained the birth certificates for my newborn babies Aysel and Asser,” their father Mohammad Abu al-Qumsan told Anadolu as tears rolled down his cheeks. “They were born on August 10. I was outside the house, finalizing the paperwork, and then I got the call… I didn’t expect to find them all gone.” Israeli hardliner Ben-Gvir “put lives at risk” with Jerusalem prayer call Reuters reports: Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on Tuesday visited the Al-Aqsa mosque compound known to Jews as Temple Mount, and said Jews should be allowed to pray there, freshly challenging rules covering one of the most sensitive sites in the Middle East. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quickly denied there would be any change to rules prohibiting Jews from praying at the site, which is holy to Muslims as well. The Al-Aqsa compound, revered by Jews as a vestige of their two ancient temples, is administered by a Jordanian religious foundation and under rules dating back decades, Jews are allowed to visit, but may not pray there. “Our policy is to allow prayer,” Ben-Gvir said as he passed a line of Jewish visitors who prostrated themselves on the ground, while others sang and clapped their hands in celebration. The Waqf, the foundation that administers the site, said around 2,250 Jews entered the site on Tuesday. The spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas denounced Ben-Gvir’s visit as a “provocation” and called on the U.S. to intervene “if it wants to prevent the region from exploding in an uncontrollable manner”. HA’ARETZ ADDS: What happened on the Temple Mount Tuesday categorically puts lives at risk, and is further evidence of the chaos being caused by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and his irresponsible leadership. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and another minister ascended the Temple Mount (known as Al-Aqsa to Muslims), and dozens of Jewish visitors prayed on the compound in violation of the status quo. All this happened in front of the police who were stationed there, but they refrained from enforcing the ban on Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount. The fact that Ben-Gvir oversees the police doubles the threat he poses, because the police exist in part to deal with criminals like him. But when the criminal is the very minister in charge of the police, who can you turn to? When the person endangering national security is the minister in charge of preserving it, what do you do? And the helplessness becomes absolute when you realize the prime minister can’t be relied upon in this situation, since Netanyahu is the one who appointed Ben-Gvir despite very well knowing that he is dangerous. An American was just shot in the West Bank. The American press can’t be bothered. DropSite News reports: Last Friday, Amado Sison, an activist from New Jersey with the solidarity group Faz3a, joined fellow demonstrators near the West Bank village of Beita. In an interview with Drop Site after being discharged from the hospital, Sison said he was taking part in a “protective presence” exercise aimed at defending Palestinian citizens living in the West Bank from settler and military violence. “The Palestinians were holding a rally and doing chants, when Israeli soldiers at a nearby outpost started shooting tear gas and aiming weapons at us,” said Sison. “ This was only my second demonstration, but some of the more experienced demonstrators shouted that live rounds were being fired and everyone began to run.” Sison and others ran from the gunfire into a nearby olive grove. It was then that he felt a “blunt impact” in the back of his leg. He initially thought he had been hit by a tear gas canister. It turned out to have been a live bullet, which entered his thigh and exited from the front of his leg. West Bank: Two Palestinian young men killed by Israeli forces WAFA reports: A Palestinian teenager succumbed to serious wounds he sustained earlier Tuesday after being shot by Israeli occupation forces in the town of Anata, east of occupied Jerusalem. The Jerusalem Governorate Media Department said in a statement that Shadi Wisam Shehada, 17, was shot by the Israeli occupation in the town of Anata while he was working at his privately-owned car wash shop in the area, for allegedly throwing stones at the occupation soldiers. Another Palestinian young man, Moataz Sarsour, was shot and killed by Israeli occupation forces during a raid on the cities of Ramallah and Al-Bireh at Tuesday dawn. The 71-year-old was searched, had his passport confiscated, and was summoned for questioning at the Ofer military compound near Ramallah on Tuesday. Rajoub has previously faced threats of imprisonment from some members of the Israeli government due to his efforts to have Israel barred from the Olympics and the football World Cup, citing violations of the Olympic Charter and FIFA regulations against apartheid in sports. In May, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz threatened to revoke Rajoub’s travel pass. “We will work to thwart his plans, and if he doesn’t stop, we will imprison him in the Muqataa [presidential compound in Ramallah], where he will be left to play stanga by himself between the walls,” Katz said, referring to a popular Israeli street game involving a football. Anti-free speech California bill inspired by opposition to pro-Palestine campus protest The Intercept reports: A bill making its way through the California legislature would stifle free speech on public university and college campuses, specifically around protests against Israel’s war in Gaza and its occupation of Palestine, according to civil rights advocates. The American Civil Liberties Union in California is ringing the alarm bell on Senate Bill 1287, saying that it will “set a dangerous precedent of chilling speech on campuses across the state.” The bill, introduced in February by Democratic state Sen. Steve Glazer, would require schools to adopt and enforce rules against harassment, discrimination, or any behavior that “creates a hostile environment on campus.” The bill’s supporters include a host of pro-Israel advocacy groups. [Glazer has made many trips to Israel and lived in Israel for six months working on a kibbutz.] Among the bill’s most vocal detractors has been ACLU California Action, which said in a letter sent last week to Glazer’s office that the bill would suppress free speech. In the letter, obtained by The Intercept, the ACLU highlighted areas of the bill that are “overly broad” and vague, such as leaving terms like “harassment,” “discrimination,” and “hostile environment” with no clear definitions that may allow institutions to apply them in ways that prohibit students’ free speech. Across the U.S., lawmakers on the state and federal level have introduced bills cracking down on campus protests. In Congress, Republican lawmakers proposed a slate of bills, including measures that would revoke visas and deport any international student convicted of a crime related to protests on campus; bar students convicted of a protest-related crime from receiving financial aid; make federal accreditation and funding for schools contingent on their policies toward protests; barring a student of faculty member from student loan forgiveness if they are expelled or fired due to protests; and withholding federal funds from schools that don’t clear encampments. Rep. Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee who is behind several of the bills, also introduced one that would require a student convicted of a protest-related offense to do community service in Gaza for six months. (photo) Iran says silence of UK, France, Germany on “inhumane crimes” in Gaza encouraged Israel to continue atrocities while threatening global peace The Cradle reports: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in a phone call that the silence of the international community in the face of Israel’s “unprecedented and inhumane crimes” in Gaza encouraged it to continue committing atrocities while threatening regional and global peace and security, IRNA reported on 13 August. Pezeshkian added that war in any part of the world is not in the interest of any country while emphasizing that a “punitive response to an aggressor is a legal right of states and a way to stop crime and aggression.” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani issued a similar message Tuesday, saying the Islamic Republic will defend its national security and sovereignty and does not ask for permission to exercise its rights. Kanaani made the statement in response to a letter published by the UK, France, and Germany, urging Iran not to retaliate for the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on 1 August. The Foreign Ministry spokesman added that the three European countries have been indifferent to Israel’s continued “genocidal acts and war crimes against defenseless Palestinians.” He stated that the European nations’ request that Iran not respond to the Hamas leader’s assassination would “encourage the criminals to continue massacre, genocide, and crime against humanity.” The spokesman said if those mentioned countries were really after peace and stability in the region, they should stand against Israel and seek to end the war on Gaza and the killing of children and women. Israeli troops accused of gang raping Palestinian detainee released on house arrest The Cradle reports: The Israeli military attorney’s office and defense lawyers agreed on the release to house arrest of the five soldiers accused of raping a Palestinian man in the notorious Sde Teiman detention camp, Haaretz reported in Hebrew on 13 August. The Israeli army spokesman said the five soldiers will be released to house arrest for 10 days during the investigation. On 8 August, a leaked surveillance video from Sde Teiman was broadcast on Israeli news network Channel 12, showing the Israeli soldiers gang-raping the Palestinian man. Members of the Knesset and Hebrew media have strongly criticized the military for detaining the soldiers, arguing that it is morally acceptable to do anything to Hamas fighters, including rape. Military police officers who arrested the soldiers have faced death threats. Israel’s military advocate general, Major General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi responded to criticism over the arrests by saying they were crucial for shielding Israel from war crimes charges in international courts and ensuring continued weapons deliveries from the US and European nations. Mr. Netanyahu has consistently placed all blame for the deadlocked negotiations on Hamas, even as senior members of the Israeli security establishment accused him of slowing the process himself. But in private, Mr. Netanyahu has, in fact, added new conditions to Israel’s demands, additions that his own negotiators fear have created extra obstacles to a deal. According to unpublished documents reviewed by The New York Times that detail Israel’s negotiating positions, Israel relayed a list of new stipulations in late July to American, Egyptian and Qatari mediators that added less flexible conditions to a set of principles it had made in late May. The documents reviewed by The Times make clear that the behind-the-scenes maneuvering by the Netanyahu government has been extensive — and suggest that agreement may be elusive at the talks set to begin this week. Israel defense ministry expects 100,000 disabled veterans by 2030, half to be related to mental health Ha’aretz reports: A recent forecast by the rehabilitation division of Israel’s Defense Ministry expects there to be 100,000 disabled IDF veterans by the year 2030, with half being related to mental health. According to the data, since October 7 the rehabilitation division has seen 10,056 wounded individuals. The Defense Ministry is now discussing a strategy to absorb and treat those wounded in the war, on top of approximately 62,000 disabled IDF veterans already being treated by the division before the war. NOTE: Over 92,000 Gazans have been injured in just ten months – at least 3,000 children have had a limb amputated. Mental health issues are widespread, including nearly every child in Gaza. Josep Borrell calls for sanctions against Israeli ministers for ‘incitement to war crimes’ The Cradle reports: EU Foreign Policy chief Josep Borrell [from Spain] said on 11 August that the bloc must consider imposing sanctions against Israeli far-right ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich for “incitement to war crimes.” Borrell urged the Israeli government to clearly dissociate itself from individuals who incite war crimes and to work seriously towards a ceasefire deal. It was one of the first photos leaked from the notorious army base, where thousands of Palestinian prisoners were held without charge and routinely tortured. The man in the picture, Ibrahim Salem, was released last week after nearly eight months of detention. He told Middle East Eye that the photo, first published by CNN, was just the tip of the iceberg of his horrific experience in detention, which included rape, electrocution and frequent beatings. “Most of the prisoners will come out with rectum injuries [caused by the sexual assault],” Salem, 36, told Middle East Eye. The prisoners will tell each other it is hemorrhoids, he added, but most are just avoiding admitting they had been raped, sometimes by female soldiers. In the following eyewitness account, Salem recalls his ordeal, starting from his arrest at a hospital in Gaza until his release. The abduction Salem was in the intensive care unit in northern Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital when Israeli forces raided the facility in December 2023. He stayed beside his children, who were severely wounded in an Israeli strike on their home. His siblings, along with several of their children, were killed in the attack. “When the army came in, they asked for all the men to go down to the square,” Salem said. But the doctor handed him his children’s reports and instructed him to stay with them in the ICU to explain their critical condition to the soldiers if they came. “The army came in and asked me: ‘What are you doing here?’ So I gave them the reports and told them in Arabic: ‘Those are my children; they cannot move in the ICU.’ And they were truly in a coma, two of them and the third one was burned,” he recalled. “Another soldier held the reports, read them and told them ‘take him’.” As Salem was taken alongside many other men, Israeli soldiers ordered them to take off their clothes before being placed in a big hole at an unknown location. There, under the rain, soldiers started beating and insulting the Palestinians, who had their hands and legs tied. Salem says the insults included “we fucked the Nukhba [an elite unit in Hamas’ military wing]” and “we fucked your mother”. “They went to the man near me and told him: ‘Raise your head.’ So, he did that and they told him: ‘Say, I am the son of a whore. Say, my sister is a whore.’ And things like that, and the man would repeat after them.” Eventually, the group of roughly 100 men was taken to a detention centre in the Negev desert. They were left in their underwear while it rained for two nights before being given light overalls and taken to the barracks, he said. “Of course, your hands are tied behind your back, your legs are also tied and you are blindfolded.” In the cell, the prisoners’ legs were untied but they were left without food for two days. One small bottle of water was shared among all of them. Afterwards, they were called in one by one for interrogations. Sde Teiman One day, Salem complained, asking the soldiers why he was detained and what he might have done. That is when he was taken to Sde Teiman, an Israeli military base doubling as a detention camp for Palestinians taken from Gaza since Israel launched its ground invasion of the besieged enclave in October of last year. “It was the worst nightmare,” Salem said about the 52 days he spent at Sde Teiman. Detainees were punished regularly there and constantly insulted by guards in what he called an attempt to “harm you mentally”. “Anyone who moves in a certain way gets punished. If you ask to go to the bathroom, you get punished,” he explained. “You stand on one leg for two hours, then they would tell you: ‘Do you want me to help you?’ And when you say yes, they tell you to say, ‘I am the son of a whore, I am the brother of a whore’, to say ‘Netanyahu fucked my sister, am Yisrael chai [the people of Israel live]. Now repeat after me, am Yisrael chai! Am Yisrael chai! A hundred times’.” “They would say: ‘No, I didn’t like that, repeat it once more.’ And you keep repeating it hundreds of times and then you see that you have been standing for two hours, so all this was for nothing.” Then there was the beating, he said. “I remember a chair was broken on my chest. While I was tied and handcuffed, he slammed a chair [on me] and it broke on my chest. I do not know [why].” During that incident, the soldier was on the phone with his girlfriend, Salem added. He turned the screen to him and had his girlfriend insult him as well. “He would tell me: ‘We will play football with your heads in Gaza. We will turn Gaza into a football field to play with your heads and your women’s heads.” Electrocution Some of the worst forms of torture took place during interrogations. One time, when Salem confronted a soldier over the killing of his young nephews, his punishment was electrocution. “He asked me where the rockets were and where the hostages were. You are asking me? What do I have to do with the hostages and how am I supposed to know where they are anyway?” “I was in Kamal Adwan [Hospital]. You killed my siblings; you bombed our home. How am I supposed to know where the hostages are?” When Salem said this to his interrogator, the soldier replied: “We don’t kill children.” “What about my sister’s children, aged three and five, are those soldiers?” Salem replied. “This is not a soldier. The kid was five. My sister wanted to just shower her children on a Friday. Is she a fighter? And what about my kids? What did they do to you? Did they participate in the 7 October attack? You kill children.” The soldier then brought a chair, got someone to blindfold Salem and tied his hands as he asked him why he spoke like that. “I noticed that he was glueing something on me. Then I started shaking. He was electrocuting me. “He electrocuted me in sensitive spots and hit me in these spots.” Raped by female soldiers Another traumatic episode for many prisoners like Salem was the sexual abuse. Though it was rampant, inmates rarely spoke about it to each other, he said. It was embarrassing for many to admit, especially when they were raped by female soldiers, who were sometimes in their teens. It was common practice for soldiers to strip detainees naked, insert objects into their rectum and grab their genitals aggressively when they changed. When word got around that a prisoner in his 40s was raped, Salem kept getting close to him until he told him what happened to him. “He told me he was raped by a female soldier,” Salem told MEE. When he asked him how it happened, the prisoner explained it would take place in the presence of another soldier in the room. The prisoner would be bent over a desk with his hands placed in front of him, handcuffed. The female soldier, standing behind him, would insert her fingers and other objects into his rectum. When he reacted or moved back, the soldier standing in front of him would hit him in the head and force him to bend again. It was one of many stories he heard in detention, Salem added. Salem said he was also touched in his private parts by a female soldier and had objects inserted in his rectum at some point. ‘Exposing the occupation’ Salem spent 52 days in Sde Teiman, a few nights in Ofer prison in the occupied West Bank and most of his detention in the Negev. He was released along with 14 other detainees last week, left at a checkpoint near Deir al-Balah in central Gaza. Initially, he thought the war might have been over, but a soldier told him: “The war will not end until we kill you all.” They were warned that anyone looking back would be shot and soldiers started shooting when Salem slowed down to help a released woman. They eventually made it to al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah. When asked about the photo that went viral, Salem said it was taken during a five- or six-hour punishment he was enduring, as he heard a camera click at the time. He had argued with a soldier after they let a prisoner urinate himself by preventing him from using the bathroom. Salem was made to remain in that position for long hours, a punishment that, he said, does not begin to describe the ordeal he faced in detention. “There are greater punishments, greater beatings,” he said. “Nothing was more humiliating than when they made me take off my clothes, or when they inserted this object into my butt, or when a young female soldier kept [touching my penis].” “But it is good that people saw the reality of the occupation and I insist on exposing the occupation. “This is the message of every prisoner I have spoken to.” Earlier this week, Israeli rights group B’Tselem said the Israeli government has been conducting a policy of institutionalized torture against all Palestinian detainees since 7 October. Torture was recorded in civilian and military detention facilities across Israel, leading to the deaths of at least 60 Palestinians while in Israeli custody in less than 10 months. The systematic nature of the abuse across all facilities left “no room to doubt an organized, declared policy of the Israeli prison authorities”. The policy has effectively turned Israeli prisons into “torture camps,” the rights group said. In its 182-page report, B’Tselem said the torture prisoners faced included: “frequent acts of severe, arbitrary violence; sexual assault; humiliation and degradation, deliberate starvation; forced unhygienic conditions; sleep deprivation, prohibition on, and punitive measures for, religious worship; confiscation of all communal and personal belongings; and denial of adequate medical treatment.” The Israeli violations against Palestinian detainees amounted to war crimes and even a crime against humanity, B’Tselem said. Ben-Ephraim is an academic who left UCLA as a post-doctorate following allegations of sexual harassment. He describes himself as “Israel analyst. Fighting for liberal democracy. Fanatic Mets fan. Host of Israel Explained and History of the Land of Israel.” Ben-Ephraim describes his two sources, saying that “the IDF source is quite high up. The other source is not but works there every day.” The “IDF source” says: “The 100 unit has been assigned to guard the prisoners. Their job is supposed to be to intervene when there is disorder. They are rough people. So they are guarding the prisoners. You are letting animals guard animals without supervision and in nightmarish conditions.” This is an interesting usage of the idea of “human animals,” a description first uttered during this genocide by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant on October 9, saying “we are fighting human animals and we act accordingly.” The interviewed security personnel provide the emotional rationale for the sadistic torture enacted upon the Palestinians, it is a hate crime geared toward revenge. The “facility source” says: “Everyone who served in Gaza is full of hatred. They have an urge to release the animal in them. Anyone who is put in a room with those who raped their girlfriends or killed their friends without supervision – will get whatever we got.” So they believe their girlfriends got raped or killed by Hamas. This doesn’t need any evidence as such, and it doesn’t matter whether those people whom they are torturing are involved in any way: “They all tell us they are innocent. So we don’t believe any of them. But yeah, some probably did nothing wrong.” It is at this point worth remembering Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s claim from October 14 that there are simply no “uninvolved civilians” in Gaza. The “facility source” knows this is bad and that it shouldn’t be done, but “things happen”: “Things happen. Bad things. People have been beaten. People have been killed. I saw one person die. People have been sexually assaulted. Yes. Nothing compared to what they did. But we all know we shouldn’t be doing it.” To date, at least 36 Palestinians have died under torture in this facility. But somehow, it doesn’t compare, it’s “nothing compared to what they did.” The murdered Palestinians are kept in refrigerators at the base. The “IDF source” says: “Another thing nobody talks about is all the bodies in fridges near the holding pens. There is no place to store them. Just containers full of dead bodies of inmates.” And there is simply no oversight: “There is not a single security officer on sight to oversee. So that even if there is a major event no one is responsible.” The level of sadism enacted upon Palestinians really defies description. Palestinians are now coming forth with the most graphic details about their sexual torture, like this victim on video (trigger warning): “I’ve been shocked by electricity through my anus. I’ve been shocked by electricity on my testicles! This is literally what happened to me – not just me but others who were shocked by electricity. You know why? Because we refused to speak dirty of [Hamas leader in Gaza Yahya] al-Sinwar. You can imagine what I’m saying… Just because I refused to spill out the dirty words, they said ok and then five of them gathered around me, five soldiers, they came to beat me up. One of them forced me to lie down on my back, he opened my thighs and smashed my private area – he literally smashed my testicles. He said: ‘I don’t want you to have kids anymore’.” One must reflect upon the additional humiliation of speaking like this about one’s own person and body, openly. But these people have been subjected to such physical and emotional destruction, that they are now shouting out to the world to make it stop, not least for their brethren still undergoing this torture. It is shocking, but is it shocking to the majority of Israelis? The fact is Israelis have been consuming snuff videos of these torture facilities at least since the beginning of this year, where coverage of the systemic torture has appeared on several Israeli mainstream channels. Has there been outcry? When there has been criticism of the soldiers actions, it was primarily couched in terms of how these actions reflect on Israel, not on the legality or morality of the abuse. In fact, Israeli leaders have even implicitly justified these heinous actions even while condemning them. “There were days when [the military investigators] applauded us.” In the end, any Israeli leaders who have come out in support of the investigations of those accused of raping Palestinian detainees have done so simply for public relations reasons, not for anything more. Remember, Israel is currently facing multiple international legal cases, at ICJ for genocide, and at ICC for crimes against humanity (arrest warrants sought for Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Galant), and similar to those charges, the threat of the accusations of rape is seen primarily as an optics issue for Israel, not a legal one. Netanyahu just likens the ICC Chief Prosecutor to a Nazi judge and incites more biblical revenge. Now, the sadism of sexual torture is becoming so obvious it is starting to reflect on Israel’s image and thus, President Isaac Herzog issued a call for calm, to allow the gang rape investigations to occur without the brouhaha of mass protests at army bases against the proceedings. Being a liberal racist and genocide inciter, Herzog’s message qualified that “hate” towards “the damned Nukhba terrorists” was “surely understood and justified.” But we must consider that “our enemies” are “persecuting us”, also in the “international legal arena”: “The morality of IDF and its soldiers has always been our pride, towards ourselves and towards the family of nations and international law. This morality stood and stands tested also against the most cruel of enemies, among them the damned Nukhba terrorists, the hate towards whom is surely understood and justified. We must not forget that our enemies attempt to persecute us again and again, also in the international legal arena – the commanders, the fighters and the public representatives. We must under no circumstances provide them with allegations against IDF and the state of Israel.” In other words, Israel should be showing itself as managing the few bad apples in a serious way, so that the persecutors (who are also prosecutors) are countered with Israel having certain legal processes which should thus be sufficient to rebuff international legal intervention. But it really is too late for that. Israel’s genocide is so massive, that prosecution of a few bad apples won’t change it. The Israeli narrative of hate and revenge is so encompassing, that it will have its outlets in one way or another, whether it is a soldier smashing testicles, or a soldier blowing up a whole building in Gaza as a photo-op. To judge by the testimony of one of the rape suspects, the “interrogation” was a sham anyway. “You feel they [the interrogators from Military Police] want to thank you”, he said. “There were days when they applauded us.” Human animals There is now apparently nothing that Israelis can do which Israeli leaders wouldn’t try to justify. What they are fighting against has been defined authoritatively (as far as they are concerned) as inhuman, so there is no way to apply human rights here – human rights apply to humans, not to “human animals.” The response to this is also beyond rationality – “hate” is now sanctioned by the highest authority as “understood and justified.” Everything is understood through this lens, and if Israeli soldiers end up acting like animals, it’s only a natural response to the real animals. Israel’s late Defense Minister Moshe Dayan once said “Israel must be like a mad dog, too dangerous to bother,” and this ‘mad dog’ and ‘master of the house gone mad’ doctrine has instructed Israel for many decades. Variations on this idea have been repeated by Israeli officials time and again. Former Defense Minister Pinhas Lavon, the initiator of the false flag terror attack on Cairo in 1954, advocated “going crazy” if ever Israel were crossed. During the 2006 war with Lebanon, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Palestinians need to understand that “the master of the house has gone mad,” while promising “James Bond-type operations, bim bam!” After Israel’s 2008-9 Gaza onslaught, Operation Cast Lead, Israel’s Foreign Minister at the time, Tzipi Livni, stated that “our troops in the Gaza strip behaved like hooligans, which I demanded of them.” She also stated that Israel “is a country that when you fire on its citizens it responds by going wild — and this is a good thing.” Israel has indeed gone wild, and is apparently trying to behave like a mad dog. But whatever happens, it’s “nothing compared to what they did.” Every accusation is a confession. Israel has claimed that it is fighting “human animals.” But now, its own monstrous sadism, deriving from a deep hate of Palestinians (which didn’t first start on October 7), is on display for the rest of the world to see. The “self-defense” claim, which was reportedly used by the lawyers defending the gang rape suspects, is something that Israel has been using for everything it does to Palestinians. All will be reviewed by Crooke in his writing and chat, so I won’t replicate them here. There’s also been a very important development as Russia’s been shipping sophisticated EW and other gear to Iran for at least a week, and Shoigu is now in Tehran to sign the newest Strategic Alliance Treaty between Russia and Iran that was put on hold because of President Raisi’s death and the election of President Masoud Pezeshkian. That will likely be done today. Simplicius provides some details as to recent Russian actions about half-way through this essay. While today at The Cradle is an analytical essay that agrees with my thinking about what will transpire at some point, which I’ll reproduce below after Crooke’s essay. But before getting to Crooke’s essay, a brief note about the newest version of Black Monday for speculators. Within the Outlaw US Empire, the crisis is in commercial real estate, which was once a very low risk sector for bank loans, that’s been unended since Covid and the move to telecommuting, and we’ve already seen why banks are under treat from rising interest rates that’s caused the market value of bonds drop steeply causing some banks to go under due to bank runs by big depositors aware of such balance sheet frailty. Given such instability, almost any reason can be given for the selloff and is, but the main underlying reasons remain under the rug for the time being. Yes, much more could and ought to be said, but that’s all for now as we’ll now turn to one of the factors underlying the instability is the Zionist Genocide and its actions: Crooke’s essay: The signposts are there for all to read: The West – in deliberately overlooking such explicit markers – cannot then complain, or escape, the ensuing consequences. No, the ‘tin ear’ is not some new western derangement – a unique mass collapse of sanity – that we are living through. It is something worse: a return to a dogmatic, authoritarian version of truth which dissident physicist Eric Weinstein complains has (in the West) also destroyed true science – ignoring and silencing its most important dissident voices, whilst amply rewarding Science’s frauds. Consider: Prime Minister Netanyahu addressed the U.S. Congress on 24 July saying, in an unrelieved Manichaean mode, that the West is facing an “axis of evil” (Iran and allies), which the U.S. must join in destroying. It was a call to participate in civilisational war. His invitation was celebrated with 58 standing ovations from U.S. legislators. Netanyahu returned home to a disaster in the Druze community on the Golan. Missile fragments had struck, killing and wounding many children playing football (the exact circumstances are still not clear). Western rationality however is perfectly capable to deduce firstly, that Majdal Shams lies in Occupied Syria; secondly, that the Druze community there remains overwhelmingly Syrian (rejecting Israeli citizenship) and largely pro-Syrian. And that they are neither Jews nor Israelis. The West seemingly cannot however, adduce the further very obvious conclusion: Why on earth would Hizbullah intentionally attack a Syrian community on Syrian land that largely is sympathetic to the Resistance? They wouldn’t. Yet these obvious facts are completely ignored by a rationality that, as Weinstein suggests, actively prefers fraud to truth. Spokesman Kirby said Hizbullah had attacked children in northern Israel. Israel’s Defence minister repeatedly says: “We don’t want war”. Western leaders parrot the same meme: No-one wants war. ‘We are fully confident that Israel’s response will be constrained and limited to military targets’. The White House: “In our view, there is no reason for some dramatic escalation in southern Lebanon and there is still time and space for diplomacy”. So what then occurs? Two major assassinations: one in Beirut and the other in Tehran (i.e. to a guest on Iranian sovereign territory). Western leaders express their ‘concern’. The Hamas target in Tehran, Ismail Haniyeh, as the Qatari PM noted, was the key Gaza hostage negotiator. This too will be overlooked, though Netanyahu’s intent to weave together Hamas, Hizbullah and Iran into a single ‘axis of evil’ cloth – thus speaking to his Join-Session of Congress thesis – must be evident even to a blinkered Washington. Recall the new ‘equation’ that followed the assassination of a senior IRGC official in the Iranian Consulate in April 2024: Henceforth Iran will respond directly – and directly from Iran. Washington says it does not want war with Iran, yet the latter explicitly was what Netanyahu advocated. Did the legislators miss his point? For nearly ten months, Israel has been unable to stabilize the situation along the northern border and allow for the return of displaced Israelis to their homes. Even if the Beirut strike doesn’t lead to wider war, restoring a negotiated stability on the Lebanese border is now beyond reach – as is too, a Gaza hostage deal. “How can mediation succeed when one party assassinates the negotiator on the other side”, Qatari PM al-Thani ruefully observed. So too ‘overlooked’ in the West, will be that which happened in Israel on the same day the assassinations later took place: Right-wing vigilantes descended from their settlements, storming two military IDF bases. The anarchic scenes of mass break-ins, fomented by several members of the ruling coalition, some of whom took part in the forcible entries, sparked angry condemnation from Defence Minister Gallant. The invasions were supported by one minister and several Knesset members seeking to free reservists that are suspected of aggravated abuse and forcible sodomy against a Palestinian detainee. According to a security source, the injured detainee was taken to a hospital with severe injuries, including to an intimate body part which left him unable to walk. “The spectacle of military police officers coming to arrest our best heroes at Sde Teiman is nothing less than shameful”, said Ben Gvir, whose ministry controls the Israel Police and Israel Prison Service, said of the storming of the IDF post. Yet the wider picture as related by Yossi Melman is: “What is happening on the part of the nationalistic messianic Right with the backing, winking or silence of ministers and MKs of the Right is a “putsch”. The youth coming down from the hills of the ‘State of Judah’ to act with the same violent methods – used against the Palestinians – (but now) are being used against the state of Israel. MK Limor Son Har-Malech (Otzma Yehudit) said: “The people of Israel will fight against enemies from outside and enemies who try to destroy us at home” [those such as the Advocate General seeking to investigate the torture being practiced Sde Teiman]. The concept of the knife in the back and the betrayal at home echoes the voices in Germany after WWII”. [Should be WW1.] Again, overlooked but not in the news: The situation at Sde Teiman was widely-known and said to be “more horrific than anything we’ve heard about Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo”. A UN report has detailed how Palestinians arbitrarily detained faced torture and mistreatment. The vigilantes from the settlements nevertheless described those committing the anal rape as “heroes” – and cast the IDF investigators as fifth columnists. Reports suggest that the perpetrators at Sde Teiman enjoy high level protection. This account of systematic torture followed earlier revelations that the Israeli army had marked tens of thousands of Gazans as suspects for assassination, using an AI targeting system, called Lavender, with little human oversight and a permissive policy for casualties. In the same vein, Right wing Cabinet ministers celebrated the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on social media Wednesday morning, as: “This is the right way to purge the world of this filth”, Heritage Minister Amichay Eliyahu, a member of National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir’s far-right Otzma Yehudit party, tweeted: “No more imaginary ‘peace’/surrender agreements, no more mercy for these dead men walking. The iron fist that will strike them is the one that will bring quiet and a modicum of comfort, and strengthen our ability to live in peace with those who seek peace. Haniyeh’s death makes the world a slightly better place”. What then is this ‘truth’ that the West ignores and silences reality, whilst amplifying its narrative frauds? It is that the Israel which they presume to understand is now something very different. And that it has an epistemology at odds with mechanistic rationalism. An eschatological Right-wing cult now holds the majority in cabinet – and wields a vigilante militia ready to attack the military establishment, and the Israeli state. No one was arrested for the attack and take-over of the two bases. They do not dare. Moshe “Bogie” Ya’alon, former Chief of Staff of the IDF, who also served as Israel’s Defence Minister, had this to say in a video interview on the forces taking over in Israel: “When you talk about Smotrich and Ben Gvir: They have a Rabbi. His name is Dov Lior. He is the Rabbi of the Jewish Underground, who intended to blow up the Dome of the Rock – and before that the buses in Jerusalem. Why? In order to hurry up the ‘Last War’. Do you [not] hear them talking in terms of the Last War; or of Smotrich’s concept of ‘subjugation’? Read the article he published in Shiloh in 2017. First of all, this concept rests on Jewish supremacy: Mein Kampf in reverse”. “My hair stands on end when I say that – as he said it. I learned and grew up in the house of Holocaust survivors and ‘never again’. It is Mein Kampf in reverse: Jewish supremacy: and therefore [Smotrich] says: “My wife won’t go into a room with an Arab”. Rabbi Dov Lior has been described by Netanyahu as the “élite unit that leads Israel”, because of his influence and control over the settler forces. And now for The Cradle article, “Resistance Axis: a calculated, simultaneous strike on Israel:” West Asia stands on a knife’s edge as the region’s Axis of Resistance prepares to retaliate against a series of recent Israeli assassinations and aggressions. Iran, Hezbollah, and Yemen’s Ansarallah-aligned armed forces have vowed to make the occupation state pay a heavy price following the targeted killing of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah senior commander Fuad Shukr in southern Beirut. Additionally, Israel bombed the Hodeidah port in Yemen following Sanaa’s successful ‘Yafa’ drone operation in Tel Aviv on 19 July. An official from the Lebanese resistance has informed The Cradle that “The response will come at once from Iran, Hezbollah, and Yemen,” adding that the goal was to “inflict a painful blow to Israel which may not be achieved should separate retaliations be pursued.” Executing the ‘Unity of Fronts’ Retaliation is all but certain and could happen within hours, according to senior US officials. A report yesterday by Axios claims that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken informed his G7 counterparts that the response could begin as early as within the next 24 hours. Just yesterday, Ali al-Qahoum, a member of the political bureau of Ansarallah, emphasized that the response to Israel will not just come from Tehran: We affirm our commitment to the battle, steadfastness, awareness, honor, and pride in standing with Palestine, the cause of the nation. The critical question now is the scope and severity of the retaliation. Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah has promised a painful yet calculated blow to Tel Aviv. During Shukr’s funeral procession, Nasrallah warned that Israel had crossed the line, promising “a real and well-calculated response” – distinct from the cross-border operations Hezbollah has conducted against Israel since 8 October. Flattening the Iron Dome Other well-informed sources agree that the response could be coordinated, suggesting that retaliation from multiple fronts simultaneously is likely. They tell The Cradle that such an approach could take Israel’s primary air defense system, the Iron Dome, out of commission by preventing it from rapidly rearming. They believe this is achievable given Hezbollah’s capacity to launch a significant barrage of missiles and given Lebanon’s geographical proximity to potential Israeli targets. These assessments appear to be consistent with those made by US officials who have warned that the Iron Dome could be overwhelmed by Hezbollah’s missile and drone arsenal should a full-scale war erupt. Senior US military officials, meanwhile, have gone on the record cautioning that Washington would probably be unable to provide Tel Aviv with sufficient protection even in a single front, full-scale war with Hezbollah. US Joint Chief of Staff Charles Brown said as much in his remarks to the press in late June. From our perspective, based on where our forces are, the short-range between Lebanon and Israel, it’s harder for us to be able to support them [Israel] in the same way we did in April [with Operation Truthful Promise]. Unwilling US support for Tel Aviv Although much has been said about the US and its allies successfully thwarting Iran’s response to the Israeli attack on its consulate last April, it is noteworthy that all targeted Israeli military bases were hit during the Iranian retaliatory strikes. Operation Truthful Promise was intended more as a message, indicating that Tehran would no longer tolerate Israeli aggression against its interests. US military reinforcements in the region may help intercept missiles and drones coming from Lebanon, while vassal state Jordan could also play a part as it did during Iran’s retaliatory strikes. However, this also makes US military assets and those of its partners legitimate targets for the Resistance Axis. As former Pentagon analyst Michael Maloof explains to The Cradle: Hezbollah would likely target US warships in the region that would take part in intercepting missiles directed at Israeli targets. “As in 2006, I envision US involvement focused more on evacuating many of the 86,000 Americans now in Lebanon who would want to leave,” adds Maloof. Washington’s top military officials also appear firmly opposed to being drawn into an active offensive role should a wider war erupt with Hezbollah, let alone a dreaded multi-front war. This stance is supported by statements from US Joint Chiefs of Staff Charles Brown, indicating the Pentagon’s limited willingness to protect the occupation state. Note that Washington’s pledges to defend Israel have made no mention of potential offensive action, reflecting an American desire to avoid a wider war. Experts doubt the US will become heavily involved in any full-scale war, supported by public statements underscoring the importance of avoiding regional escalation – and voiced more privately, the desire to keep US military targets safe from retaliatory strikes. Military risk and political calculations As Brown said at the time, Washington’s main message is: To think about the second order of effect of any type of operation into Lebanon, and how that might play out and how it impacts not just the region, but how it impacts our forces in regions as well. The general – the most senior ranking US military official and the senior military advisor to the White House – was delivering a message that carries special significance amidst the recent developments. By stating that an Israeli-initiated war on Lebanon put US troops at risk, Brown was essentially saying that a wider regional war was not seen as helping US interests by the Pentagon’s top brass. Given these statements, it remains possible – though far from guaranteed – that the outgoing Biden administration may rein in Israel regardless of how painful a blow is delivered to it by the Axis of Resistance. The upcoming US election in November is another factor that may prevent a regional conflagration. “The US getting more militarily involved with Israel,” warns Maloof, “would lead to riots in the streets of Chicago at the Democratic Convention later this month.” These realities suggest a scenario where Washington might force Tel Aviv to absorb the Axis of Resistance’s retaliation, however severe it may be. The new complement of USN assets will boost what can be done from the sea until they become depleted and need to retire for their own safety. Also, after last April’s attack by Iran, Jordanian bases are now targets. Any USN vessel inside Persian Gulf that uses it AD systems to defend the Zionists will become a target; so, if the Empire doesn’t want a wider war it will need to remove such assets. Anticipation of the defense scheme affects the plan of attack. The above map shows where the main actors are placed in the region. A multilayered, multi-vectored, synchronously timed attack from the four actors would be difficult to plan but even harder to defend against for there are an almost endless number of possibilities. One major question mark is, What will the Saudi’s do? Another, What will the Iraqis allow? In the latter, will there be active combat between Iraqi and Imperial forces that attempt to defend the Zionists that might grow into an attempt to forcibly eject all illegal Imperial forces? Yes, there’re many what ifs involved in the equation. And the last question: How long will the assault last? I’m prepared for it to last several days, to the point where all AD assets are used, and all Zionist and Imperial targets are exposed. Another question; What does Iran consider a legitimate target? The Knesset with all its Zionazis? The Ministry of Defense most certainly. What about known radical “settler” sites that IMO cannot be considered civilian? When what Crooke has revealed in his many essays and chats, the whole space of Occupied Palestine ought to be considered a target since its filled with Zionist/Nazi Genocidalists who differ none from Hitlerite Nazi Germans, or is that painting with too wide a brush? Netanyahu Takes Israel to the Brink of Destruction: How Will Iran and Hezbollah Reply? On August 30, at 8:00 pm. local time, Israel struck a four-story residential building in the southern section of Beirut, Lebanon. The airstrike assassinated Fuad Shukr, killed three civilians, and injured 174 others. Shukr was a senior military commander in the Lebanese resistance organization, Hezbollah, and was a founding member of its military wing. Shukr is accredited with obtaining the bulk of the group’s more advanced weapons, which experts have said are on parity with those of Israel. Israeli military planners had accused Shukr of a missile strike on July 27 that killed 12 children playing football in Majdal Shams in the occupied Golan Heights. The children were not Israeli citizens, or Jewish, but were Syrian Druze living under occupation on their own land. Hezbollah denied responsibility for the strike, and said after investigation the missile was an Israeli air-defense missile which misfired. Israeli ministers attempted to visit the funerals of some of the killed children, but were attacked verbally by parents and relatives, who blame the Israeli military for the massacre. Netanyahu deflected blame on Hezbollah for the dead children, and used them to justify the assassination of Shukr. If a regional war starts because of a lie, it won’t be the first time. The US used 9/11 to justify the attack, invasion and occupation of Iraq based on what we know was a lie. Prime Minister Najib Mikati of Lebanon condemned the “blatant Israeli aggression,” describing the assassination as a “criminal act” in a “series of aggressive operations killing civilians in clear and explicit violation of international law”. Iran At 2:00 am. Beirut time, just six hours after the Shukr assassination, Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated by an Israeli airstrike in Tehran, along with his bodyguard Wasim Abu Shaaban. Hamas and Hezbollah are both part of the ‘axis of resistance’, which is formed by armed groups across the region. They are united in the armed resistance of Israeli occupation of the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as Israeli occupied areas in Lebanon and Syria. The groups have been in military exchanges with Israel during the current Gaza war beginning on October 7. The groups have vowed to continue their struggle in support of the people of Gaza until Israel will stop the war. Israeli media has reported that the missile that struck Haniyeh’s residence was launched from outside Iran, which would be a first for Israel. Haniyeh had been living outside of Gaza since 2019, and was in Tehran for the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian which he attended just hours before his death. Israel has previously sabotaged Iranian nuclear and military facilities and assassinated nuclear scientists from inside Iran. In April, Israel launched an attack inside Iran on a military facility in Isfahan, and inflicted damage to a Russian-made S-300 missile defense system. Iran’s Khamenei, Pezeshkian and IRGC have all promised retaliation for Haniyeh’s assassination, but have not disclosed their plans. Haniyeh was a guest of the government of Iran when he was killed, and in the culture of the region, a guest is considered the responsibility of the host. Iraq About 8:00 pm. Beirut time, almost exactly timed with the Israeli attack on Beirut, the US carried out an attack inside a base south of Baghdad operated by Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) that killed four members of the group and wounded four others. US officials described the attack as “self-defense” demonstrating coordination with the Israeli military’s assassination of Shukr in Beirut. US officials, speaking off the record, said the US carried out an airstrike in Musayib, located in Babil province that targeted militants that the US supposed might launch drones on US forces in Iraq, in an unprovoked and pre-emptive deadly attack. The Iraqi parliament had demanded the US military leave Iraq, and the Baghdad government held talks with the US on the subject of withdrawal, but as of yet the US has not complied with the Iraqi demands. Iraq condemned the strike saying the US has committed a “heinous crime” by targeting security sites south of Baghdad and said the attacks were a serious violation of the US mission and mandate, an Iraqi military spokesman Yahya Rasool said in a statement. The PMF is a division of the Iraqi Army, and fought alongside the US-led coalition in the fight to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria. On July 24, President Joe Biden gave an Oval Office speech saying that he concluded in recent weeks that “the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation.” Biden had bet his chances on winning re-election on delivering a win in Ukraine, and a ceasefire in Gaza. On July 11, Netanyahu reneged on his promise to accept the Biden proposed ceasefire in Gaza, Biden and his advisors decided to throw in the towel. Biden is now a lame-duck President and the Oval Office is running on autopilot, which suits Netanyahu. On July 24, Netanyahu delivered an address to a joint meeting of Congress. He received numerous standing ovations from the members who attended, while dozens of lawmakers boycotted his address and demanded a ceasefire in Gaza. Netanyahu gaged his support in the Congress and knew then he could get away with murder, and stay out of jail. The US Congress had effectively given him the ‘green-light’ to do as he pleased. John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen M.Walt exposed AIPAC as the driving force which keeps the US foreign policy firmly under the thumb of Israel. How Will Iran and Hezbollah Reply? In a TV address on July 1, Hassan Nasrallah said the decision to reply has been taken, and Iran has made a similar statement. Netanyahu may use the reply to attack nuclear facilities inside Iran, which has been an extremist goal for years. Yair Lapid, Israeli opposition politician, met with Netanyahu on July 1 and told him to stop listening to Ithamar Ben-Gvir, the extremist ally of Netanyahu, and stop the war in Gaza. The root cause of Middle East conflict is the occupation of Palestine. On July 19, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) said Israel should stop settlement activity in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem and end its “illegal” occupation of those areas and the Gaza Strip as soon as possible. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the court had made a “decision of lies”. The assassination, in Iran no less, marks a major escalation that will likely have regional ramifications and came hours after Israel bombed Lebanon on Tuesday evening, killing three civilians, according to Lebanese state media. Israel claimed that it killed a senior Hezbollah figure in the strike, but the Lebanese resistance group had not issued a statement on the matter at the time of publication. Israel killed multiple members representing multiple generations of Haniyeh’s family in Gaza since October. Several leaders of Hamas have been assassinated by Israel before Haniyeh, only to be replaced and for the organization’s capabilities to grow. In January, Saleh al-Arouri, the deputy head of Hamas’ politburo, was killed in a strike in Beirut along with several other cadres and commanders with the group. Two weeks ago, Israel claimed to have killed Muhammad Deif, the secretive head of Hamas’ armed wing, in a strike in Gaza that killed at least 90 Palestinians in an area it had unilaterally declared as a humanitarian zone. There has been no comment from Hezbollah on the attack so far. “In a targeted, intelligence-based elimination, Israeli Air Force fighter jets eliminated Hezbollah’s most senior military commander and the head of its Strategic Unit, Fuad Shukr ‘Sayyid Muhsan’, in the area of Beirut,” the army said in a statement. The army noted that Shukr served as “Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah’s right-hand man and was Nasrallah’s adviser for planning and directing wartime operations.” NOTE: Israel’s attack on Hezbollah’s leader is in apparent “retaliation” after a projectile struck a community in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, killing 12 youths. Israel blamed Hezbollah, which denied the allegation. Indications in the hours following the incident suggest it may have been an Israeli Iron Dome missile. Local sources and witnesses told Al Jazeera the men were bombed when they reached Salah al-Din Street. The attack killed all of the men, nine in total. Al Jazeera’s video footage shows the bodies of the nine victims lying on the ground, and Al-Awda Hospital said it had received nine victims from Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. In nine days, Israeli army killed 255 people in Khan Younis: Gaza officials Al Jazeera reports: A statement on Telegram says 255 people have been killed, about 300 people wounded with 31 missing in the nine-day “horrific massacre” carried out on the eastern outskirts of Gaza’s second-largest city. Thirty-one homes were bombed by the Israeli military while their residents were inside, the office said, adding 320 homes and residential buildings were struck in total. Accounts of sexual abuse in Israeli detention are not isolated incidents: medical group says Middle East Monitor reports: Physicians for Human Rights in Israel (PHRI) reportedly said yesterday it has information about other cases of Palestinian prisoners who had been sexually assaulted by Israeli soldiers in the notorious Sde Teiman detention centre in the Negev desert in southern Israel. PHRI said a victim of sexual violence was hospitalized three weeks ago and was in a life-threatening condition. He had injuries to the upper part of his body and a serious injury to the rectum. It confirmed that it knows about other cases of sexual assault that have not been disclosed, either because the victims are afraid to complain to the Israeli authorities or because the authorities did not open an investigation. “Mounting testimonies indicate these incidents are not isolated. They suggest systematic abuse and violence, and a blind eye to violations. The Sde Teiman torture facility must be shut down urgently, abuse across all prisons must end, and those responsible must be prosecuted,” it added in a tweet. On Monday, Israeli public broadcaster KAN revealed that a Palestinian detainee was gang-raped by Israeli soldiers at the Sde Teiman. The detainee was taken to a hospital with severe injuries to an intimate body part, which left him unable to walk. Ten Israeli reservists were detained as a result. However, far-right members of Israel’s cabinet have called on authorities to “take your hands off our fighters” and labelled the reservists “heroes”, while some tried to storm the detention centre they were being held in in an effort to free them. In recent months, the army has released dozens of Palestinian detainees who bear signs of torture, malnutrition and exhaustion. Israeli Army Appoints Gen. Barak Hiram – who ordered the killing of Israelis on October 7th – as Commander of Gaza Division Ha’aretz reports: Brig. Gen. Barak Hiram will assume the post of commander of the Gaza Division of the Israeli army. On October 7th, Hiram ordered a tank commander to break into a home in Kibbutz Be’eri that he knew housed Hamas fighters and Israelis. even at the risk of harming civilians. The tank fired shells at the house, killing 12 Israelis and a number of Hamas members. Two Israelis survived the attack. When Hiram met with families of the Israeli victims, some of them called on him to resign, or to command another operational division. But, Hiram “insisted that precisely because he was the officer in charge in Be’eri, he is in the best position” to take over in Gaza. When Hiram was asked what actions should be taken as part of accepting responsibility, he said: “I will correct the mistakes that were made when I take responsibility for the division. I don’t ask for thanks for this.” NOTE: In January, Hiram ordered Israeli forces to blow up Al-Isra University, which they had used as a military headquarters prior to its demolition. Hiram was officially reprimanded for carrying out the demolition without prior approval from his superiors. Save the Children’s teams also have 17 pallets of temperature-controlled medicines stuck in El-Arish, Egypt, including four boxes that require continuous refrigeration. From rights groups to athletes, demands are growing for a boycott of Israel over the atrocities taking place in the Gaza Strip, which have led to the death of more than 39,000 Palestinians since Oct. 7 last year. The Palestine Olympic Committee sent a letter Monday to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) chief, Thomas Bach, asking him to ban Israel. Meanwhile, petitions and social campaigns have gained momentum. A petition launched by US-based rights group Avaaz garnered over 600,000 signatures, demanding the IOC ban Israel “until their government ceases its assault on innocent civilians in Gaza.” On the other hand, pro-Palestine activists have mobilized, actively demonstrating in Paris and at the IOC headquarters in the Swiss city of Lausanne. But with the Games to commence Friday and no ban on Israel yet in sight, experts urge continued activism against Israel’s participation and expressions of solidarity with Gaza throughout the event. Ban on Israel Rebecca O’Keeffe, a peace activist and member of Irish Sport for Palestine, has been strongly advocating against Israel and believes it should be banned from the Olympics and Paralympics. “For decades, apartheid Israel has targeted, abused, injured, and murdered Palestinian athletes and coaches, and this has only intensified during the ongoing genocide. “Israel has also converted Palestinian sports venues into mass detention centers and continues to play in illegal settlements,” O’Keeffe, a former international basketball player, told Anadolu. She criticized the IOC for remaining silent, and said that though it claims political neutrality and will not permit political demonstrations, the reality of its stance exposes “blatant double standards and selective morality.” O’Keeffe said previous action taken by the IOC, including a ban on Apartheid South Africa and on Russia, sets a precedent and gives clear justification to remove Israel from the Games. “When you consider Israel’s violations of the Olympic Charter, as well as both rulings from the International Court of Justice of plausible genocide and illegal occupation, it should be a clear-cut case in my opinion,” she said. O’Keeffe said she thinks Israel wants to use the Olympics as an opportunity to “sports-wash the genocide” in Palestinian territories through “overt displays of propaganda, promotion of Zionist nationalism, and inclusion of athletes who have served — or still serve — in the Israeli Occupation Forces.” In a similar tone, Palestinian political analyst Kamel Hawwash questions why Israel has not been banned from the Games while its forces have been killing Palestinians, many of whom might have participated in the Olympics “I believe that based on its record, it should be banned from the Olympics and any attempt to say, ‘no it shouldn’t be banned,’ is outrageous and demonstrates a lack of sympathy with the Palestinian people,” Hawwash told Anadolu in a video interview. He said athletes from other countries that have been banned, pointing to Russia and Belarus, are competing as neutrals. “If Russia is banned, Israel should be banned too, and that would be equality. It wouldn’t be picking on Israel, but it will be punishing it for its crimes,” said Hawwash. ‘Rambunctious’ street protests Experts are of the view that during the tournament, the street protests will intensify. Jules Boykoff, an American author and academic whose research areas include the Olympics, believes that the demonstrations could intensify after the Games begin. “Activists in France are promising to deliver rambunctious street protests during the Olympic period to raise the issue of Palestinian justice,” he told Anadolu. Boykoff highlighted how both the IOC and FIFA, the world governing body for football, have gone out of their way to avoid the question of Gaza’s destruction by the Israel Defense Forces, adding that their behavior has been both “hypocritical and shameful” and violates the spirit of their charter documents. “The IOC, based on its actions, appears impervious to the pleas of activists but street protests could force the question at press conferences,” he said. Pressure from countries & athletes Experts also highlight how participating countries and athletes can exercise pressure on Israel and the IOC. Activist O’Keeffe said that within the IOC, there is a certain set of guidelines outlining athletes’ freedom of expression, recommending familiarization of rights and working within that to apply pressure wherever possible. “Athletes and countries can also appeal to their politicians to advocate and mobilize on their behalf, and national sporting bodies can release a statement to the IOC,” she said. Supporters and spectators can follow the BDS movement, sign petitions, email the organizations demanding action, join protests, and boycott commercial sponsors, she added. On the other hand, analyst Hawwash believes that countries should boycott the Olympics, adding that several countries did this when the Games were held in Russia years ago and that athletes participated in their own capacity “So, it wouldn’t be a new thing to do to say that countries will boycott the Olympics if Israel participates.” “If many countries decided to do that, the International Olympics Committee would have to consider banning Israeli athletes from participation.” O’Keeffe argues that the IOC should remove Israel from the Olympics and Paralympics, adding that if organizations act decisively, countries and athletes would not be put in such positions. On athletes participating against Israeli competitors, Hawwash said this was a matter of principle. “I think they should withdraw from facing Israeli athletes, Israeli teams, like the football team,” he said, adding that countries should not put their athletes in such a difficult position and that they themselves should decide they cannot participate in a sporting event since the opponent country is committing war crimes and genocide. For many athletes, opting out of the Games would be a moral stand that would be on the right side of history, said Hawwash. On the issue of possible sanctions and bans as faced in the past by athletes who refused to compete against Israeli athletes, the political analyst said: “If they are sanctioned by the International Olympics Committee, then that would mean the International Olympics Committee is double punishing the Palestinians: One, by allowing Israel to participate and then punishing those who stand against Israel’s crimes and who will withdraw from competitions with Israelis.” Boykoff maintained that many athletes will feel compelled to speak out. “Refusing to play against Israeli athletes would raise the issue into the global news cycle, but any athlete who does that risks a backlash from both the IOC and those living under the spell of Israeli impunity.” Solidarity with Palestinians Experts also spoke on how participants could express solidarity with the Palestinians. He said that once the Palestinian flag is raised at the opening of the Olympic Games, “I have no doubt there would be the most audible voice of encouragement and celebration of the Palestinian team that is there.” That would be the most visible way of showing support, with the whole stadium “on its feet,” said Hawwash. Other means of expressing support he suggests include displays of the Palestinian flag or keffiyeh by medal winners, along with their own flag “These are all visible ways of supporting the Palestinians,” he said. “Countries that support Palestine could invite the Palestinian team to their countries to show their solidarity after the games are finished and that would send the best response to Israel that it is not the victim.” “It is the Palestinians who are, but that these Palestinians are walking proud and tall, lifting their flag and competing to win,” he said. After several speeches by organizers, the march towards the US Capitol began on a hot and humid day. A diverse array of people and religious groups held signs showing their support for Palestinians. Off to the side of the march, volunteers distributed water bottles. Within minutes of the march getting under way, multiple demonstrators had collapsed by the side of the road, unable to get up. As the march continued, more people collapsed. Volunteers were quick to render first aid. The collapse of dozens of protesters, many of whom had fallen in the middle of the street, quickly broke the momentum of the march, as people tried to help those in need by holding their heads up, dousing them with water and rinsing their eyes with eyedrops and water. It quickly became apparent that demonstrators had come into contact with toxic chemicals. As people lay on the ground, many of them were coughing and had a bright red flush across the skin of their arms, legs and faces. During the march the Capitol Police issued a tweet saying they had used spray on protesters because they had become violent. There were no reports of violence, though some demonstrators acknowledged they had come close to the police barricades. Social media users were quick to attribute the video to Hamas – an accusation the group denied. Izzat al-Rishq, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, said on Tuesday that the clip was fabricated as part of “Zionist propaganda” and incitement against Palestinian resistance. Analysts and commentators have pointed to several factors casting doubt on Hamas being responsible for the footage. Documents uncovered by Peace Now illustrate how Israel’s pro-settler government has quietly poured tens of millions of dollars into the unauthorized outposts, which are separate from its more than 100 officially recognized – but also illegal – settlements. Some of those outposts have been linked to settler violence against Palestinians and are sanctioned by the U.S. The group estimates approximately 500 people live on the small, unauthorized farms and 25,000 more live in larger outposts. The Palestinian groups on Monday reached a reconciliation agreement following three days of intensive talks in the Chinese capital Beijing to end their political division since 2007. Representatives of 14 Palestinian groups, including the rival Fatah and Hamas movements, signed a new statement pledging to end the division and strengthen unity. In a sweeping 83-page legal opinion, the court, based in The Hague, said Israel is responsible for “systematic discrimination” against Palestinians based on race or ethnicity, has breached the right of Palestinians to self-determination and has effectively annexed large swaths of land. “Israel has an obligation to bring an end to its presence in the occupied Palestinian territory as rapidly as possible,” Nawaf Salam, the court’s president, said from the bench Friday. He added that the court considers Israel’s continued presence illegal and a “wrongful act.” The searing advisory opinion is nonbinding but still holds legal weight and could have broader consequences in the international arena, including in trade and diplomacy. The court said member states should not recognize as legal the situation arising from Israel’s presence in occupied territory, nor should they render aid or assistance in maintaining it. (screenshot) The Guardian reports: The US military-built pier for carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza will be dismantled and brought home, ending a mission that has been fraught with repeated weather and security problems that limited how much food and other supplies could get to starving Palestinians. Vice Adm Brad Cooper, deputy commander at US Central Command, told reporters in a Pentagon briefing on Wednesday that the pier had achieved its intended effect in what he called an “unprecedented operation”. “Having now delivered the largest volume of humanitarian assistance ever into the Middle East, we’re now mission complete and transitioning to a new phase,” said Cooper. NOTE: The U.S. was forced to halt operations four times on the $230 million pier due to weather events. In fact, in the two months since the pier was up and running, it has been operational for only nineteen days. In that time, about nineteen million pounds of food were brought ashore. If that sounds like a lot, it’s not – it’s about 9,700 tons (8,800 metric tons), which translates to about 646 truckloads, an average of less than fourteen trucks per day. The pier was expected to handle ninety to one hundred fifty trucks per day. Prior to the start of hostilities, an average of 500 truckloads entered Gaza every working day. Palestinian residents of Jerusalem get 4-12 hours of running water per week Al Jazeera reports: Ir Amim, a Jerusalem-focused Israeli rights group, says that in the midst of a record-breaking heatwave, there is an acute water crisis in Kufr Aqab, a large Palestinian neighbourhood located along the northern edge of occupied East Jerusalem. Kufr Aqab is one of eight Palestinian neighbourhoods that are part of the Israeli-run Jerusalem municipality but are located beyond the Israeli separation barrier. It is home to 100,000 people, roughly 30 percent of East Jerusalem’s Palestinian population. During the 15-hour operation, sounds of exchanges of fire and detonations of explosive devices were reported. Speaking to Israel’s parliament, Netanyahu told lawmakers: “First, I want to beat Hamas.” A spokesperson for Netanyahu said the Israeli prime minister is not seeking to dodge an inquiry but that “the government is completely focused on winning this war”. “What people want us to do right now, they don’t want us to go into a dramatic internal investigation while our hostages are still being held, and so many soldiers have abandoned their lives to protect the country,” said the spokesperson. “Of course there will be an investigation, but right now we’re focused on winning this war.” A video of a three-hour meeting at the prime minister’s office, described in the Israeli media as “tense,” aired on television shortly afterwards, showing a series of confrontations between the bereaved families and the prime minister, who rejected their demands for an apology over his role in the security failures. In a marathon session that lasted until early Thursday morning, the parliament gave final approval to extend the emergency law until Nov. 30. Israeli officials used the new law on May 5 to close Qatar-based Al Jazeera within Israel, confiscating its equipment, banning its broadcasts and blocking its websites. Under the law, Israel’s Communications Ministry also briefly seized AP broadcasting equipment from southern Israel after accusing it of violating a new media law by providing images to Al Jazeera. The government returned the equipment to AP several hours later. A bill that would make the emergency legislation permanent is currently making its way through the Israeli parliament. The draft said a permanent bill is needed because Israel “has faced serious security threats since its establishment and is expected to continue to face them in the future, possibly even more severely”. As a result of the action, Azaria and his immediate family will generally be blocked from coming to the United States. A CNN investigation found that former commanders of that unit have been promoted to senior positions in the IDF and are now active in training Israeli ground troops as well as running operations in Gaza. Israel has illegally built around 280 settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, and incentivized Israeli Jews to live in them. Over a quarter of Israel’s population contemplate emigration: Poll The Cradle reports: More than a fourth of Israel’s population say they would leave the country if they could, according to a new survey published on 17 July by the Jewish People Policy Institute (JPPI). The poll results show that about 25 percent of Jewish Israelis and 40 percent of Palestinians with Israeli citizenship agreed with the statement, “If I had a practical possibility to immigrate abroad, I would do so.” Based on the most recent census figures from Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics, this would be proportional to 1,811,750 Jewish Israelis and 835,600 Palestinians with Israeli citizenship, making up more than a quarter of the country’s population. The survey also shows that public trust in Israel’s political and military leadership has dropped dramatically. Fifty-five percent of respondents said they had low or very low trust in the army’s command, and only 26 percent expressed confidence in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
