  • Doing some spring cleaning and was surprised to find these toys. The white Formula 1 car was purchased by me as a kid in 1975, on a road trip to Texas. The green Ford F100 was handed to me in 1990. Its die cast, the doors open, steering wheel works and the tail-gate works too. The Hot wheels car is a special edition Scott Riggs die cast race car. It has a graphic from the PIXAR movie “Cars” on its hood. Its been around since 2006.

  • Things are starting to green up. I spotted some elk grazing in an open field along my dog walking trail. I spotted one nice sized bull and was able to get a decent photo of him.

The europeans called them “elk” and the Shawnee and Cree called them “wapiti” meaning “white rump”.
The elk is the largest of the deer species and one of the largest land animals in North America.
Its hard to realize how big these animals are until you have had the opportunity to be close to one.

I used my Canon 250mm lens to get these pictures

  • 2 days ago it was 68F. Today started out at 33 and snowing. Kona dog took it all in stride.
I found a black cup fungus. First time I’ve seen one this color. It felt like lizard skin. I did a little research and discovered its called an Ebony Cup. Apparently it produces something called “Plectasin”. It has the ability to inhibit growth of pathogenic bacteria. Im not sure if its currently in use but sounds positive. Learning interesting things everyday

  • Spring has brought out the trillium flowers. These are the first I've seen this year. Kona dog is sniffing things in the background.

The trillium has traditionally been used as a uterine stimulant , and has been called “birthwort”.

  • Remember, don't feed the birds. Oregon Seagulls are fearless when bread snacks are involved. It was quite a bit of chaos, but it was a lot of fun. Actually there is no specific bird actually called a “Seagull”, but there are variety of Gulls. About 15 total. The Gulls is the photos ,which I've called Seagulls my whole life, are actually Western Gulls. Interesting fact: Western Gulls mate for life.

  • Beautiful day today. Spotted a Kestrel hanging out on a tree. Kona dog had her interests elsewhere. A kestrel is a type of small hawk. One thing they do thats notable is hover about 20 meters above the ground then swoop down to grab their dinner. Other hawks are more suited for capturing prey while in flight. I took these with my 250mm canon zoom lens. The kestrel was a bit far, but I managed to get a couple shots worth sharing.

  • This big rock was exposed during our recent minus tides. The shape of the rock is cool, but the rock itself is totally blanketed in sea anemones, barnacles and black mussels. The large black mussels used to be prevalent all up and down the Oregon coast. But in the 70’s people found out they taste delicious.

  • We were able to walk around around Hug Point at Arch Cape near Cannon Beach yesterday during a minus tide. Its not too common, but its fun. There is a nice waterfall you can climb around. Kona dog and I are looking down at my lovely misses from the top of the waterfall. Found a couple things while beach combing as well. A small limpet Shell and a couple Sand Dollars
