Living in the Han style: Can four students turn back fashion trends by two thousand years?

Four female students in south China’s Hubei Province are determined to bring back an old fashion – one that is two thousand years old.

According to Chutian Metropolis newspaper, Song Sisi, Liu Jingwen, Yang Shan and the fourth unnamed girl, are both roommates and classmates, studying Chinese Literature at Wuchang Shouyi University. Their shared enthusiasm for traditional “Han Fu” Han Dynasty-style Chinese clothes, saw them head to campus to show off their ancient fashion tastes in a photoshoot with a difference.

With their passion for the style being questioned, Liu said she hoped that one day people would no longer deem their tastes as bizarre. “It’s as normal as Japanese people wearing kimonos on the street,” Liu told the newspaper, referencing the popularity of traditional dress in Japan.

Named after the Han dynasty (BC 202 - 220), the origin of Han Fu could be even earlier than that. The style was hugely influenced by Confucianism, and was worn and developed for over two thousand years up until the dawn of the Qing dynasty (1636 - 1912).
