Did you know that the shortest war in recorded history lasted only 38 minutes? The Anglo-Zanzibar War was fought between the United Kingdom and the Zanzibar Sultanate on 27 August 1896. The conflict started when Sultan Khalid bin Barghash refused to abdicate the throne, following the death of the previous Sultan. The UK, who had a protectorate over the island, demanded that Khalid step down in favor of Sultan Hamoud bin Mohammed. When Khalid refused, the British launched a naval bombardment, which quickly overwhelmed the Zanzibari defenses and forced Khalid to flee.
