A Taipan opens its mouth anticipating a meal. The fangs are protected and hidden inside soft gummy sheaths which are pushed back when they bite. The fangs of the Taipan are the longest of any Australian elapid snake (up to 12mm). Eastern or Coastal Taipan Oxyuranus scutellatus.
