88 years ago today in 1935, a Syrian preacher who turned to resistance under the British mandate in Palestine was killed by British forces in a forest outside of Jenin. That preacher was named Izz ad-Din al-Qassam, after whom the military wing of Hamas, the Al-Qassam Brigades, are named: “What the West and Israel permanently misunderstands about the nature of Palestinian resistance was that his name and example lived on.
