FROM THE EARTHLY SHEPHERD'S DIARY!
USING SCRIPTURES TO THROW AWAY THE "FISH" WE CAUGHT BACK INTO THE WATERS!
In this race towards the perfect man, there are many discouragers and discouraging situations that many a time turns away from the faith genuine Kingdom seekers.
A local assembly of 50 people with a possibility of 25 souls making it to eternal life is far more important to God than a mega church of over a million people, where there's no possibility of a soul with heaven in sight, except for mundane acquisitions.
DON'T GET ME WRONG...A CHRIST-LESS POOR MAN SHARES THE SAME UNSAVORY FATE WITH THE CHRIST-LESS RICH MAN.
But my burden in this study, are those of us(Pastors, church leaders/workers and believers) *WHO ARE USING THE VERY SAME BIBLE WITH WHICH WE CAUGHT "FISHES" AS FISHERS OF MEN,TO THROW BACK THE SAME "FISHES" BACK INTO THE WATER!*
We become discouragers to souls we preached God's Word to and the Holy Spirit converted, using the same God's Word as our defense...thus causing disillusionment among these young christians who expect Christ-likeness from us.
Christ Jesus Himself dealt with the very interesting issue of using Scripture to justify or excuse unbiblical practices,as we read in Mark 7:9-13 when the Jewish leaders of His day replaced honoring and caring for their parents with offering sacrifices to God which they called Corbin.
Also, as we read the Gospels we notice that even Satan knows and quotes the Bible to further his own ends (See Luke 4:9-12).
We cause Christ Jesus pain when our carelessness throw away these believers back into the bondage of the devil, from whence He has loosed them;
But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. (Mat 18: 6)
Yes, that's how important each soul is to God, and should be to us as well, having been saved through the same Grace and Mercy!
When these new believers see us...
playing religion, hating discipline, casting God's Word behind us, seeing us frolicking with morally decadent people, whom we should be rebuking and preaching to... All they will see will be, evil and deceit, as we slander others before them.
AND LIKE MOST OF OUR FAMILY MEMBERS KNOW, BY HIS GRACE AND MERCY, I TEACH FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE.
I have seen this kind of behavior over and over again...Many of us using or hiding behind God to cover up our real motives, either to run from responsibility, to manipulate others, or to justify our ungodly behavior towards others.
We use Scripture to manipulate people.
For instance, concerning Paul’s teaching related to wives submitting to their own husbands as unto the Lord (Ephesians 5); we cannot just leave that passage out in the air isolated from the rest of the text, which also speaks about “submitting to one another” (which implies husbands should also submit to their wives when applicable, which frames the whole discussion from 5:21; as well as the command to husbands to love their wife as Christ loves the church in 5:25).
Unfortunately, the fact that carnal, abusive husbands(Especially traditionally minded pastors and believers) have misused that command to coerce their spouse into obeying them without question, conveniently leaving out the entire context of Ephesians 5:21-25.
We say “God told me” when we are trying to have our way.
I have heard many of us try to have our way or justify irresponsible behavior by saying “God told me”. Whenever somebody uses that line...immediately red flags should go up, because it indicates to me immaturity at best and or manipulation or justification of an action at worst.
Yes, God speaks to people, but big decisions should be made in the context of mature counsel as well as other independent witnesses who confirm what a person senses in their heart. The use of the phrase has become so flippant and synonymous with "taking the Lord's Name in vain!"
However, many of us don’t care to test our “word” with others...we are always saying “The Lord told mr”in spite of our awful track record related to hearing the voice of God! Truly, in many cases, our motive is to justify our behavior by attributing our actions with a “leading of the Lord”.
When we say “pray about things” we should be acting upon in obedience
When I ask a person to do something for me and they say, “I will pray about it” I know that this is usually Church lingo for saying “no”!
I would be more comfortable with a plain “no” than an insincere promise to truly pray about something.
For instance, the apostle James (chapter 2) corrects the believer who tells a hungry and naked person “be warmed and filled” as a replacement for actually giving them what they need materially, which is similar to telling people in need you will pray for them when you know you are supposed to do something to aid them. This is another example of using God and or prayer to avoid responsibility and action. Many of us are approached by physically sick members for financial help to treat themselves... instead,we preach faith, lay hands on them and send them home,WHEN WE HAVE THE FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO GET THEM PROPER MEDICAL TREATMENT WHILE PRAYING FOR THEIR SAFE AND SPEEDY RECOVERY.
Oftentimes, some of these people die,and we tax their families before going to their funerals to preach fancy sermons. What will the yet to be strong believers who witnessed it all say or think about Christianity?
When we legalistically use Scripture to appear righteous to others
There have been many of us who were offended and who would justify cutting off other people, including our families,(in most cases, simply to dodge responsibility) because we legalistically follow Matthew 18:15-18 and just attempted one brief talk with a person who offended us.
Instead of sincerely trying to reconcile, we merely want to meet to say we followed this Biblical practice to justify cutting off a relationship. (Of course, Matthew 18:15-18 also speaks about bringing the elders into the issue when there is an impasse, but many of us conveniently leave this part of the Bible out when we desire to avoid being made accountable.)
Many Pastors and believers have used the passage in 2 Corinthians 6:14 related to not being bound together with unbelievers to justify divorcing their spouse, avoiding their children, or breaking key relationships with people they deem unspiritual or unbelievers. However, the context of this is seen in 7:1 when it speaks of cleansing ourselves from all defilements of the flesh and spirit including idol worship; hence, it is not referring to every person who doesn’t know the Lord!
Paul actually corrects this in 1 Corinthians 5:10 when he makes it clear he is not against believers associating with unbelievers of the world or that every believing spouse should leave their unbelieving husband or wife. (1 Corinthians 7:12-15 makes it clear that believing spouses should remain with their unbelieving husband or wife...unless the unbeliever abandons them.) Christ Jesus regularly fellowshipped with sinners and unbelievers; however, His biggest challenge was with the religious fundamentalists who hid behind God and the Bible to justify their inner ugly selves!
There's a lot to say in this matter, but I hold my peace here.
But the question remains that... WHAT ENCOURAGEMENT OR FOUNDATION ARE WE LAYING DOWN FOR YOUNG BELIEVERS TO STRENGTHEN THEIR FAITH? AREN'T WE THROWING THEM BACK INTO THE WATER, EXCEPT GOD INTERVENES?
Allow me close with a true life experience. A co-teacher of mine(before my accident),had their children driven from their church's private school because of a single term's school fees. And when they were building the school, her husband, a tipper driver donated numerous trips of sands and bags of cement. Sadly, the husband became jobless as the tipper broke down.
Yet, with the help of the wife they never defaulted in school fees until that term. Not that the Church lifted a finger to help the husband in fixing the tipper any day, despite his family's commitment. When they asked the school principal, he said the pastor approved it, neither did the pastor deny it ... The rest is history. They left the church, but till today, the man has NEVER seen any reason to resume being a Christian newly converted by the Holy Spirit through the consistent preaching of his wife.
THIS IS THE THROWING OF THE "FISH" BACK INTO THE WATER! AT THIS STAGE , ONLY PRAYERS AND THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN HELP THE HUSBAND!
God is so particular about souls that Christ Jesus told the the parable of the shepherd who left 99 safe sheep to find one lost sheep and how Heaven rolls out drums to celebrate a conversion of one soul.
*WHAT ARE WE DOING, CUSTODIANS OF GOD'S WORD?*
May His Grace and Mercy be abundant for us to do the right thing, Amen!
