What should Christians be doing to get ready for the cataclysmic events preceding the end of the Age and the Second Coming of Christ Jesus ? Given the current state of affairs in the world, it's hard to avoid the conclusion that the Lord may be returning soon. Most of us are trying to hold on to our confidence in God and live by faith, but some of our friends and relatives tell us that's not enough. BUT WHAT OF US WHO ARE WELL INFORMED AND HAVE AN ALMIGHTY GOD WHO HAS MADE EVERY NEEDED PREPARATION FOR OUR SAFETY, EVEN BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD? The Bible clearly instructs us to be vigilant. But it also teaches that no one can say for certain that we are living in the “end times.” This is at best a debatable proposition. Christ Jesus Himself repeatedly said that no one knows or can know the day or hour of His return (Matthew 24:36; Mark 13:32; Acts 1:7). To be sure, we are surrounded by events and developments that could be interpreted as signs of the end. On every land we see famines, earthquakes, disasters, troubles, persecutions, wars and rumors of wars (Mark 13:7-9). But has there ever been a period in the history of the world when this was not the case? Can you imagine what it was like to be a believer in Rome under the emperor Caligula, or Nero, or Domitian? To face the arena, the stake, or the lion’s den for your faith? What do you suppose Christians were thinking when the legions captured Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple in A.D. 70? Or when Attila overran Europe in the 5th century, the Vikings in the 9th, Genghis Khan in the 13th, or the Muslim Turks in the 16th? Might anyone have concluded that the end was near when the Black Death decimated Christendom, wiping out entire towns and claiming more than 25 million lives between 1347 and 1352? How did the situation look to believers at the beginning of the last century, when the so-called Great War destroyed the flower of an entire generation (37 million casualties)? Or a few decades later, when the shadow of Hitler and the Third Reich was rising over Germany and Eastern Europe? Clearly, the early 21st century has no monopoly on death, disaster, devastation, and terror. You don’t need to know a great deal about history to realize this. But let’s assume for a moment that these are the end times. What then? How should a Christian respond? Fortunately, the apostle Peter gives us a straightforward answer to this question. Writing specifically with reference to the end of the age, when “the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat, [and] both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up,” Peter does not suggest that believers head for the hills, adopt a “fortress mentality,” and start stockpiling food and weapons. INSTEAD, HE SIMPLY ASKS, “Since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?” (II Peter 3:10-12). As Peter sees it, end-time Christians are called to do one thing: they are to practice holiness and do good to others wherever and whenever they can. They are supposed to work the works of God “while it is day” (John 9:4). Paul seems to have been thinking the same way when he wrote to the Galatians, “Therefore as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10). That’s because the Google-owned video and streaming platform imposed a punitive freeze on The Electronic Intifada’s channel for seven days. I’ll say more on that below. But don’t worry, you can still watch the whole program – just not on YouTube. Our headline story was an enlightening conversation with Matt Kennard, of the investigative publication Declassified UK, about Britain’s outsize role in Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people. We started with a news brief from associate editor Nora Barrows-Friedman covering recent developments in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, including the horrific massacre in al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis, where Israel dropped massive bombs on refugee tents, killing 40 people, half of whom were totally obliterated. We also talked about Tuesday’s presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, respectively the Democratic and Republican candidates in the United States.Both competed to display more support for Israel, and Harris doubled down on her lies about 7 October mass rapes, fabrications and atrocity propaganda that Israel has used to try to justify its genocide. And we discussed how ABC, Australia’s national broadcaster, has become the first mainstream Western outlet to report extensively on Israel killing its own citizens in large numbers on 7 October – a topic on which The Electronic Intifada has broken many stories, right back to the first days of the genocide. “We can’t say for sure that they’re copying our coverage,” observed associate editor Asa Winstanley, “but they go back to a lot of the same sources.” YouTube censorship A few hours before we were scheduled to go live on 11 September, we received a notification that YouTube had deleted three videos from The Electronic Intifada’s channelclaiming that we had violated their “community guidelines” related to “violent criminal organizations.” Clearly YouTube is not referring to the Israeli army, which is what springs to my mind when I hear that phrase. The videos YouTube removed were in fact months-old livestream segments featuring contributing editor Jon Elmer, explaining and analyzing footage published by resistance organizations in Gaza of combat with Israeli forces. YouTube does not tell us what specifically it objects to, making it very difficult for us to understand how – if it is even possible – to avoid this increasingly draconian and arbitrary censorship. As punishment for doing journalism, YouTube froze our channel for seven days. We are not allowed to post any videos there, and that’s also why we could not broadcast the livestream there. As I said at the start of this week’s program, we completely reject YouTube’s vague accusations: Regular viewers know that The Electronic Intifada provides professional, ethical, responsible and factual journalism and analysis. So we view this action as blatant political censorship. With respect to our livestreams, Jon explained on this week’s show how in every resistance video we air, we edit out any kind of graphic violence, loss of life or injury. Because we understand that speech related to Palestine is a particular target of censorship and suppression, we go above and beyond journalistic and broadcast standards in terms of removing any graphic content. Many other channels post the same videos, but totally unedited, and I am not aware that they are being censored the way we are. Indeed, YouTube insiders have leaked to Wiredthat there has been growing discontent at the company over what the tech publication calls “a pattern of inconsistent moderation of content relating to Israel’s war with Hamas.” “The sources believe management at the world’s most popular video platform have been playing favorites and scrabbling to justify takedowns – or find exceptions to keep content up,” Wired reported in July. Eric Sype, the US national organizer for Haifa-based 7amleh, an organization that monitors internet censorship of Palestinians, told Wired, “We have firsthand experience of YouTube and Google employees telling us that videos clearly inciting violence and racism against Palestinians do not violate the companies policies, while educational videos posted by Palestinian creators have to be age restricted, labeled as graphic, or simply just taken down.” Despite the censorship, The Electronic Intifada will continue to bring our readers and viewers reporting and analysis that they cannot easily get from any other English-language source, documenting a world-historic moment in the struggle for Palestine’s liberation. Our mission is purely educational and journalistic, but the reality of increasing censorship and repression in Western so-called democracies is making journalism – real journalism, not stenography for the government – ever more difficult.But we will remain committed to that mission no matter what. Fortunately, we were able to livestream the program on other platforms – Instagram and Twitch, as well as on X/Twitter and Facebook. Because it is such a dominant video platform, arguably an effective monopoly, we will continue to try to use YouTube to reach as many people as we can. At the same time we will explore broadcasting on additional platforms to try to mitigate the risk we face from censorship. Now, more about this week’s program. Small country, outsize role in genocide Britain supplies weapons to Israel, but the amount is relatively small compared, say, to the United States or Germany. For that reason, some people may think London’s role in Israel’s genocide is less significant. “But it’s a key player in supporting the Israeli war machine through logistics and intelligence,” Matt Kennard told the livestream. And much of that support is channeled through RAF Akrotiri, a sprawling British air force base in Cyprus, just 30 minutes flying time from Gaza. Kennard is the co-founder and head of investigation at Declassified UK, an outlet which focuses on British national security issues. In May, Kennard revealed that the British air force, the RAF, had flown about 200 spy flights over Gaza since December. All operated from RAF Akrotiri. As well as surveillance, Declassified UK’sreporting has also shown that the British government may be supporting Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza more directly. On the ground in Gaza? Getting any information is extremely difficult, however. Weeks into the genocide, as Kennard explained, The Sun reported that the SAS, an elite British military unit, was in Cyprus preparing to “rescue hostages and Brits stranded in Gaza.” Almost immediately, the “D-Notice” committee, a British government body that censors reporting on “national security” matters, issued a directive to publications not to report on SAS activities in Gaza. “So the SAS are likely in Israel,” Kennard said. “And what is likely is that they would have an advisory role with the Israeli military about their ground invasion. But it’s possible that they could be on the ground in Gaza, or could have been at certain points.” According to Kennard, RAF Akrotiri is also a major base for arms transfers. Dozens of military cargo aircraft have flown from the base to Israel since the genocide began. The British government refuses to disclose what they are carrying. And Akrotiri may well have been used by Israel itself. In June, Hizballah leader Hassan Nasrallah, warned Cyprus that the Lebanese resistance group would respond against the island nation if it allowed Israel to operate from its territory. “The Cypriot government should be warned that opening its airports and bases to the enemy to target Lebanon means it has become part of the war,” Nasrallah said. Nasrallah said that Israeli forces had trained in Cyprus, but he did not specify which facilities they had used. The British bases in the country are not under the direct control of the Cyprus government, but under that of London, as the UK considers them its own sovereign territory – parts of the island Britain retained when it ended its formal colonial rule in 1960. However, according to Kennard, there are indications that Israel itself has used RAF Akrotiri during the genocide. He noted that in February, the Express, a British newspaper, reported that London had withdrawn permission for Israel’s US-built F-35 warplanes to land at Akrotiri until “hostilities” in Gaza end. “​​So the imputation was they previously had that access,” Kennard said, adding that the UK continues to supply parts and servicing for the Israeli F-35s. There have been growing protests by antiwar activists in Cyprus against British and American use of the bases to attack Yemen and to support the genocide in Gaza. Activists in the country have credited Declassified UK with helping uncover the extent of those operations, according to Kennard. Shrinking press freedom We also talked about the growing repression against journalists and activists in the UK, including the years-long imprisonment and persecution of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, and the recent arrests of Sarah Wilkinson and Richard Medhurst under draconian “anti-terrorism” laws. Kennard was speaking to The Electronic Intifada from Germany and revealed that for the first time in his career he had traveled abroad on a reporting trip without his laptop, as he was concerned by the risk that he might be detained, questioned and have his equipment confiscated on his return to the UK. That has happened recently to other journalists, including Medhurst. Although it is receding, Kennard said, “we still have a degree of freedom.” “So if we’re not using that to expose our complicity in this horror, then we’re not doing our job right, and we’re not being moral individuals,” he added. One of the most ENDURING LEGACY of our Lord and Saviour,Christ Jesus,while on earth,is COMPASSION. Compassion is that inward, deeply felt emotional response of pity for a suffering person, coupled with a desire to alleviate that suffering. Three ingredients of Compassion; (1) sees the suffering person, (2) feels tender pity in response to the suffering, and (3) acts to alleviate that suffering when possible. That sense of tender pity must be distinguished from any self-righteous, condescending, air of superiority that looks down on the sufferer but remains aloof(PRIDE),and unengaged. I came across this befitting quote for it,*THE CHRISTIAN, THEN, IS TO BE A MAN OF PITY, A MAN WHO CANNOT SEE SUFFERING OR NEED OR DISTRESS WITHOUT A SWORD OF GRIEF AND PITY PIERCING HIS OWN HEART. THERE CAN BE NO MORE COMPLETE OPPOSITES OTHAN CALLOUSNESS AND CHRISTIANITY.* Godly compassion feels the needs of others and seeks to help.(2 Cor. 1:3–4). 3. Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; 4. Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. (2Co 1: 3-4) 👉 KINDNESS Kindness means showing mercy and doing good even to people who do not deserve it or who deserve the opposite. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, (Tit 3: 4) Christ Jesus equally desires us to show kindness even toward the ungrateful and rebellious: *But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful*(Luke 6:35–36). We do need grace,lots of it.... It is one thing to give ₦300 to a stranger who deserves nothing from you; it’s another thing to give ₦300 to someone who has spit in your face or attacked you and who deserves the opposite of kindness. Too often our hearts reflect the opposite,eg; *That’s the last time I will do him a favour* *Enough is enough. This relationship/friendship is over. *After all I’ve done, this is the thanks I get!* Thankfully, this is not the way God treats us, and it is not the way we have to treat others. How is it possible for you and me to show kindness in these situations? The answer is simple but profound: kindness does not depend on the other person’s character; it depends on us. God does not call us to show kindness to the other person because the other person deserves it, but because God deserves it and because He wants His sons and daughters to be like Him. 👉HUMILITY Humility means recognizing that all you have comes from God and that you are absolutely dependent on HIM as both your CREATOR and your REDEEMER. Humility was no more valued in Paul’s day than it is in our day. Both worlds were, and are, populated by prideful people. People swaggered and strutted, like they do today. They admired dominance, self-assertion, and one-upmanship. Humility in Paul’s Roman culture was an abject, servile quality, yet Paul exalts it as a strength in Colossians 3:12, as does the rest of our Bible. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; (Col 3: 12) This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word. (Isa. 66:2) All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (1 Pet. 5:5; also James 4:6) What does that look like in our horizontal relationships? Biblical humility involves an utter trust in God that allows others to be honored above me. Humility means preferring others over me; Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves*(Phil. 2:3). It means taking the last seat as a guest at someone’s dinner table Since God is in complete control, I don’t have to be first. I can lower myself, let others have the top spot, and know HE will provide for me in HIS way, in HIS time. 👉 GENTLENESS Popular understandings of gentleness sometimes confuse it with weakness or femininity. This is a mistake. The apostle Paul was not a weak man. Yet he describes himself to the Thessalonians as *gentle among you*(1 Thess. 2:7; cf. 2 Cor. 10:1). Christ Jesus was not a weak MAN. Yet HE said of HIMSELF, *I am gentle and humble in heart*(Matt. 11:28–29). Someone has observed that this is the only place in the Gospel records where Christ Jesus describes HIS inner character. As I regularly remind men, if our definition of manhood does not feature humility and gentleness as central, then it is unChristian. That lesson doubles for men who are Christian leaders. At HIS core, the GREATEST LEADER who walked this earth was GENTLE and HUMBLE. 👉PATIENCE Colossians 3:12 extols *patience*,as being long-suffering, long-fused, and long-tempered toward those who irritate us. It is the ability to bear with people, not to grow angry or bitter or irritated or annoyed with them, even when they are foolish or ungrateful or even apparently hopeless. . . . It is the ability serenely to take people as they are, with all their faults and all their failings, and with all the ways in which they hurt and wound us, and never stop caring for them and bearing with them. Others are Self restraint, Forbearance , Christ-like forgiveness and Love...On face value,they seemingly have the same meaning...BUT EACH IS DISTINCT ON ITS OWN. For instance, let's see how apostle Paul uses *LOVE* to conclusively summarised all the attributes we discussed above; Colossians 3:14; *And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.* KJV👉13. Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. (Col 3: 13-14) The apostle prioritizes LOVE,above all else, for with it,the others would naturally fall into place. SO YOU SEE, TO FOLLOW PEACE WITH ALL MEN IS —our SELF-SACRIFICIAL GIVING for the OTHER PERSON'S BEST— as the most important virtue, THE SUPREME RELATIONAL GRACE. Let's wrap this up this way👇 God’s forgiveness of us is HIS DECISION, DECLARATION, and PROMISE to NOT HOLD OUR SINS AGAINST US BUT TO GRACIOUSLY HOLD THEM AGAINST CHRIST JESUS as OUR SUBSTITUTE. In fact, God’s forgiveness emerges as a major theme here in Colossians. In chapter 1 Paul recalls, *For [God] has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins* (Col. 1:13–14). It is characterized by the unilateral claim of private human experience as free raw material for translation into behavioral data. In this version of capitalism, predicting and influencing behavior (political and economic) rather than producing goods and services is the primary product. This economic logic prioritizes extracting, processing, and trading personal data to predict and influence human behavior by exploiting those predictions for various economic (marketing) and political objectives. In many cases, surveillance capitalism merges with PsyWar tools and technologies to power the modern surveillance state, giving rise to a new form of Fascism (public-private partnerships) known as techno-totalitarianism. Leading corporations employing the surveillance capitalism business model include Google, Amazon and Facebook. Surveillance capitalism has now fused with the science and theory of psychology, marketing, and algorithmic manipulation of online information to give rise to propaganda and censorship capabilities that go far beyond those imagined by the twentieth-century predictions of Aldous Huxley and George Orwell. Historical Development Surveillance capitalism has its roots in the early days of the internet, when companies like Google and Facebook exploited the “ungoverned spaces” of the digital realm. The dot-com bust, the success of Apple’s consumer-centric approach, and the surveillance-friendly environment created by the US National Security Agency (NSA) and CIA’s investments in the “war on terror” all contributed to the rise of surveillance capitalism. Shoshana Zuboff “Surveillance Capitalism unilaterally claims our private human experience as a free source of raw material for its own production processes. It translates our experience into behavioral data. Those behavioral data are then combined with its advanced computation capabilities, what people today refer to as AI machine intelligence. Out of that black box come predictions about our behavior, what we will do now, soon and later. Turns out there are a lot of businesses that want to know what we will do in the future, and so these have constituted a new kind of marketplace, a marketplace that trades exclusively in behavioral futures, in our behavioral futures. That's where surveillance capitalists make their money. That's where the big pioneers of this economic logic, like Google and Facebook have become so wealthy by selling predictions of our behavior first to online targeted advertisers, and now of course, these business customers range across the entire economy, no longer confined to that original context of online targeted advertising. All of this is conducted in secret. All of this is conducted through the social relations of the One-Way mirror. Ergo surveillance, the vast amounts of capital that have been accumulated here are trained to create these systems in a way that keeps us ignorant. Specifically the data scientists write about their methods in a way that brags about the fact that these systems bypass our awareness so that they bypass our rights to say yes or no. I want to participate, or I don't want to participate. I want to contest, or I don't want to contest. I want to fight, or I don't want to fight. All of that is bypassed. We are robbed of the right to combat because we are engineered into ignorance. We saw these same methods being used by Cambridge Analytica with those revelations a year ago with only a tiny difference. This phenomenon is distinct from government surveillance, although the two can be mutually reinforcing. The concept of surveillance capitalism, as described by Shoshana Zuboff, is driven by a profit-making incentive, and arose as advertising companies, led by Google's AdWords, saw the possibilities of using personal data to target consumers more precisely.[1] Increased data collection may have various benefits for individuals and society, such as self-optimization (the quantified self),[2] societal optimizations (e.g., by smart cities) and optimized services (including various web applications). However, as capitalism focuses on expanding the proportion of social life that is open to data collection and data processing,[2] this can have significant implications for vulnerability and control of society, as well as for privacy. The economic pressures of capitalism are driving the intensification of online connection and monitoring, with spaces of social life opening up to saturation by corporate actors, directed at making profits and/or regulating behavior. Therefore, personal data points increased in value after the possibilities of targeted advertising were known.[3] As a result, the increasing price of data has limited access to the purchase of personal data points to the richest in society.[4] Shoshana Zuboff writes that "analyzing massive data sets began as a way to reduce uncertainty by discovering the probabilities of future patterns in the behavior of people and systems.[5] In 2014, Vincent Mosco referred to marketing information about customers and subscribers to advertisers as surveillance capitalism and made note of the surveillance state alongside it.[6] Christian Fuchs found that the surveillance state fuses with surveillance capitalism.[7] Similarly, Zuboff informs that the issue is further complicated by highly invisible collaborative arrangements with state security apparatuses. According to Trebor Scholz, companies recruit people as informants for this type of capitalism.[8] Zuboff contrasts the mass production of industrial capitalism with surveillance capitalism, where the former is interdependent with its populations, who are its consumers and employees, and the latter preys on dependent populations, who are neither its consumers nor its employees and largely ignorant of its procedures.[9] Their research shows that the capitalist addition to the analysis of massive amounts of data has taken its original purpose in an unexpected direction.[1] Surveillance has been changing power structures in the information economy, potentially shifting the balance of power further from nation-states and towards large corporations employing the surveillance capitalist logic.[10] Zuboff notes that surveillance capitalism extends beyond the conventional institutional terrain of the private firm, accumulating not only surveillance assets and capital but also rights, and operating without meaningful mechanisms of consent.[9] In other words, analyzing massive data sets was at some point executed not only by the state apparatuses but also by companies. Zuboff claims that both Google and Facebook have invented surveillance capitalism and translated it into "a new logic of accumulation".[1][11][12] This mutation resulted in both companies collecting many data points about their users, with the core purpose of making a profit. Selling these data points to external users (particularly advertisers) has become an economic mechanism. The combination of the analysis of massive data sets and the use of these data sets as a market mechanism has shaped the concept of surveillance capitalism. Surveillance capitalism has been heralded as the successor to neoliberalism.[13][14] Oliver Stone, creator of the film Snowden, pointed to the location-based game Pokémon Go as the "latest sign of the emerging phenomenon and demonstration of surveillance capitalism". Stone criticized that the location of its users was used not only for game purposes, but also to retrieve more information about its players. By tracking users' locations, the game collected far more information than just users' names and locations: "it can access the contents of your USB storage, your accounts, photographs, network connections, and phone activities, and can even activate your phone, when it is in standby mode". This data can then be analyzed and commodified by companies such as Google (which significantly invested in the game's development) to improve the effectiveness of the targeted advertisements.[15][16] Another aspect of surveillance capitalism is its influence on political campaigning. Personal data retrieved by data miners can enable various companies (most notoriously Cambridge Analytica) to improve the targeting of political advertising, a step beyond the commercial aims of previous surveillance capitalist operations. In this way, it is possible that political parties will be able to produce far more targeted political advertising to maximize its impact on voters. However, Cory Doctorow writes that the misuse of these data sets "will lead us towards totalitarianism".[17]This may resemble a corporatocracy, and Joseph Turow writes that "the centrality of corporate power is a direct reality at the very heart of the digital age".[2][18]: 17  The terminology "surveillance capitalism" was popularized by Harvard Professor Shoshana Zuboff.[19]: 107  In Zuboff's theory, surveillance capitalism is a novel market form and a specific logic of capitalist accumulation. In her 2014 essay A Digital Declaration: Big Data as Surveillance Capitalism, she characterized it as a "radically disembedded and extractive variant of information capitalism" based on commodifying "reality" and transforming it into behavioral data for analysis and sales.[20][21][22][23] In a subsequent article in 2015, Zuboff analyzed the societal implications of this mutation of capitalism. She distinguished between "surveillance assets", "surveillance capital", and "surveillance capitalism" and their dependence on a global architecture of computer mediation that she calls "Big Other", a distributed and largely uncontested new expression of power that constitutes hidden mechanisms of extraction, commodification, and control that threatens core values such as freedom, democracy, and privacy.[24][2] According to Zuboff, surveillance capitalism was pioneered by Google and later Facebook, just as mass-production and managerial capitalism were pioneered by Ford and General Motors a century earlier, and has now become the dominant form of information capitalism.[9] Zuboff emphasizes that behavioral changes enabled by artificial intelligence have become aligned with the financial goals of American internet companies such as Google, Facebook, and Amazon.[19]: 107  In her Oxford University lecture published in 2016, Zuboff identified the mechanisms and practices of surveillance capitalism, including producing "prediction products" for sale in new "behavioral futures markets." She introduced the concept of "dispossession by surveillance", arguing that it challenges the psychological and political bases of self-determination by concentrating rights in the surveillance regime. This is described as a "coup from above."[25] Zuboff's book The Age of Surveillance Capitalism[26] is a detailed examination of the unprecedented power of surveillance capitalism and the quest by powerful corporations to predict and control human behavior.[26] Zuboff identifies four key features in the logic of surveillance capitalism and explicitly follows the four key features identified by Google's chief economist, Hal Varian:[27] The drive toward more and more data extraction and analysis. The development of new contractual forms using computer-monitoring and automation. The desire to personalize and customize the services offered to users of digital platforms. The use of the technological infrastructure to carry out continual experiments on its users and consumers. Zuboff compares demanding privacy from surveillance capitalists or lobbying for an end to commercial surveillance on the Internet to asking Henry Ford to make each Model T by hand and states that such demands are existential threats that violate the basic mechanisms of the entity's survival.[9] Zuboff warns that principles of self-determination might be forfeited due to "ignorance, learned helplessness, inattention, inconvenience, habituation, or drift" and states that "we tend to rely on mental models, vocabularies, and tools distilled from past catastrophes," referring to the twentieth century's totalitarian nightmares or the monopolistic predations of Gilded Age capitalism, with countermeasures that have been developed to fight those earlier threats not being sufficient or even appropriate to meet the novel challenges.[9] She also poses the question: "will we be the masters of information, or will we be its slaves?" and states that "if the digital future is to be our home, then it is we who must make it so".[28] Zuboff discusses the differences between industrial capitalism and surveillance capitalism in her book.
