‘An entirely preventable disaster’: Health officials warn of catastrophic polio epidemic in Gaza Tareq S. (Photo: Omar Ashtawy, APA Images) Sewage water is flowing in most of the streets of the Gaza Strip. Mountains of garbage are piling up next to crowded refugee camps and shelters. In some areas of the strip, children can be found rummaging through the piles of trash in search of food or scraps that their family can use. Due to Israel’s targeting and destruction of Gaza’s water and sewage networks, millions of Palestinians in the crowded Strip have nowhere to dispose of waste other than the street. And with the total collapse of municipal and sanitation services, there is no one to collect the waste. The sanitation workers who try to reach the dumps near the border to dispose of waste are targeted by the Israeli military. The families who live in tents near the piles of garbage and waste have to worry about more than just the putrid smells of hot, rotting garbage. For months the Gaza Ministry of Health and other international public health agencies have warned of the spread of diseases due to the lack of clean water and untreated sewage in the streets. In mid-July, in cooperation with the World Health Organization, the Gaza health ministry conducted an analysis of samples of sewage water in the Gaza Strip, and found the presence of poliomyelitis, or as it is more commonly known, the polio virus. The highly infectious disease, which in severe cases can cause paralysis or death, was eradicated in Gaza more than 25 years ago. The detection of the virus in July caused the health ministry and the WHO to set off the alarm bells. The ministry declared a ‘polio epidemic’ in the Gaza Strip, and the WHO called for immediate intervention to prevent the spread of the disease. Though the Gaza health ministry has not yet announced any cases of polio in the population, doctors and health officials in Gaza say action must be taken before it’s too late. Dr. Jamal al-Homs, Director of the Kuwait Specialized Hospital in Rafah, says that there has been a significant and noticeable increase in various epidemic diseases that are now spreading rapidly throughout the Gaza Strip. “Today, the polio virus has returned due to the lack of a proper sewage system, the lack of clean and potable water, and the lack of the possibility of general hygiene due to the accumulation of garbage and the inability of citizens to maintain general hygiene,” he told Mondoweiss.. Al-Homs stressed that if the polio disease spreads in Gaza, there will be no way to stop it under the current conditions. (Photo: Omar Ashtawy/ APA Images) Dr. Ahmad Al-Farra, the head of the pediatric department at the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, told Mondoweiss that the majority of diseases that children contract are caused by the spread of viruses among displaced families in the refugee tent camps. In theory, polio, which affects the spinal cord and brainstem causing paralysis and difficulty breathing, “would find a suitable and hospitable environment to spread in the crowded tent camps,” al-Farra said. “If one of the individuals is infected, the spread of the disease will be swift due to the severe crowding and sharing of public toilets among the displaced,” he said. “The solutions lie in personal hygiene and the use of soap, alcohol, and sterilizers,” al-Farra said. “But the Israeli occupation prevents the entry of these materials, and the fuel that is needed to operate the sewage treatment facilities.” “The samples [collected by the MOH] showed polio type 2, which must be prevented by intramuscular vaccination,” he continued. And while limited polio vaccines are available for newborns in some parts of Gaza, al-Farra said that the necessary vaccines to treat polio type 2 aren’t available due to the lack of electricity, which prevents hospitals and health facilities from storing the vaccine at the correct temperature. “The health situation in the Gaza Strip is catastrophic,” al-Farra said. ‘We all have diseases that we don’t know about’ Next to mountains of garbage in the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis, Mustafa Abu Luli, 53, sits underneath a tarp with his family. The family of five were displaced from Rafah to Khan Younis, and have been living in a tent for months. Every single member of the family suffers from some kind of skin disease or rash. “We all have diseases that we do not know about and cannot find treatment for,” Al-Luli told Mondoweiss, holding up his sons one by one, revealing their bare bellies and backs, covered with bumps and rashes. “Our women have also been infected with hepatitis before, and are still suffering from the effects of the disease.” As he spoke, Abu Luli pointed to the piles of garbage amassed next to the family’s tent. “This is the source of the diseases we are suffering from. We all have serious diseases and cannot find treatment. We tried and failed. All these diseases are due to the lack of water and cleanliness. But there is nothing we can do. We have nothing,” he said. Next to Abu Luli’s tent, children walk on the mountains of garbage and dig for scraps. Anything could be useful: something that can be used to light a fire so their family can cook food; or maybe some scraps of food if they are desperate. (Photo: APA Images) According to residents, they are surrounded by flies and other bugs, as well as wild dogs that come into the camps in search of food or drink. “All the causes of death are available to us in the Gaza Strip. The piles of garbage are a disease, the lack of water is a disease, the tent is a disease, everything here causes diseases,” Abu Luli lamented. “The heat and the sun are diseases, the mosquitoes and flies are a disease, the dogs that attack our tents at night are a disease. Not to mention the bombing and destruction.” “We are terrified of the spread of polio, especially since we are close to the sewage where they discovered the disease. Our children go there when they pass from one place to another or from one street to another. They can’t avoid it, because the sewage is spread everywhere” Abu Luli said. “If this disease spreads, we will die without anyone looking at us. If it infects someone in my family, they will die because we will not find a cure.” According to doctors and public health experts, a host of preventable diseases and infections are already running rampant in Gaza, and with a barely-functioning health system, most people, like Abu Luli’s family, can’t get basic treatment. “We notice many serious skin diseases coming to us from the displaced families, and there is no treatment for them,” Dr. al-Homs told Mondoweiss. “Due to the problematic health conditions and catastrophic living conditions in light of the lack of treatments and the closure of crossings, it is expected that these diseases and the number of those infected with them will increase and thus represent a significant threat to citizens,” he said. “The World Health Organization has reported tens of thousands of cases of lice and scabies,” Dr. Yara M. Asi, a Palestinian public health expert and the co-director of the Palestine Program for Health and Human Rights, told Mondoweiss. “Thousands of cases of rashes that have spread very easily among children that are clustered together. Over half of the population has reported respiratory infections. There are very high reports of acute diarrhea, which for children under five can be quite lethal. There are tens of thousands of cases of jaundice,” she continued. “These are easily treatable conditions. The tragic tragic part of this is that, by themselves, none of these need to lead to a health emergency. And yet the conditions that Israel has created and enabled will cause significant unnecessary suffering, disability, and death for people,,” Asi said. “Largely because there is no capacity for people to receive care from advanced traumatic injuries like amputations, let alone something as basic as lice.” Immediate intervention needed to prevent disaster Following the news that the poliovirus was detected in the sewage water in Gaza, Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the organization would send more than a million doses of the polio vaccine to Gaza and distribute them over the coming weeks to prevent children from being infected. Ghebreyesus stated in an opinion piece in the British newspaper The Guardian, “Although no polio has been recorded so far, without immediate action, it will only be a matter of time before thousands of children become infected and become unprotected.” Ghebreyesus wrote that children under the age of five are most at risk of contracting this virus, especially infants under the age of two, due to the disruption of regular vaccination campaigns as a result of the conflict that has been ongoing for nine months. “Polio is almost entirely preventable with vaccinations. That’s part of what’s so devastating about this,” Asi told Mondoweiss. “This is completely predictable, completely avoidable.” According to Asi, prior to October 7th, Palestinian vaccination rates for polio across the occupied territories, including the Gaza Strip, was about 99%. Since October 7th, with the decimation of the healthcare system, and the birth of thousands of babies who have been unvaccinated, that number has plummeted to about 86%. “This is incredibly low. We have thousands of children missing all sorts of routine vaccinations,” she said. And while no cases of polio have been reported yet in Gaza, Asi warned that doesn’t necessarily mean no cases exist. “There has been a communication blackout in many parts of Gaza. Many families are completely displaced. They’re not exactly in contact with health authorities. Many hospitals and health clinics are shut down, destroyed, and nonfunctional. So it’s not impossible that there are cases that simply haven’t been reported yet,” she said. “The ramifications of a potential, or at this point, probable polio outbreak in Gaza are multifaceted,” Asi continued. “You have thousands, tens of thousands of babies that have been born since October 7th. We’re already seeing a very high infant mortality rate because of lack of care. These children, many of them are not getting vaccinated. If they contract certain types of polio, they will be paralyzed for life. (Photo: APA Images) Emphasizing the need for a mass vaccination campaign, and for Israel to allow shipments of aid and medicine into Gaza, Asi pointed to the fact that the Israeli military had begun a campaign to offer polio booster vaccines to its soldiers following the news that the virus was detected in Gaza. “The IDF recognizes that this is a problem… they don’t want [their soldiers] to return to Israel and spread polio there,” Asi said. “…And they’re taking care to make sure that their aquifers are protected because a polio outbreak they know is devastating to a population.” “Viruses, as we learned during COVID-19, do not respect borders. So if polio were to spread through people exiting, humanitarian workers or others leaving the territory, it could be carried into Egypt and spread into the rest of the region,” she said. “It’s frankly very terrifying. And that’s why I think the World Health Organization has really sounded the alarm, because it is naive to assume that this will, A, not escalate within Gaza, and B, has no potential to escalate elsewhere.” Highlighting the WHO’s calls for an immediate ceasefire, Asi said that a cessation of hostilities to allow the entry of vaccines and permit health officials to distribute them to the population is the first, and most basic step to address the public health disaster in Gaza. “The problem is we are past the point where a ceasefire alone is going to end suffering for people,” she said. “We will see the ramifications of this for months, years, possibly generations. The spread of disease is not going to stop the day of a ceasefire. From ground troops to commanders, the rules of war have been shredded. by Jonathan Cook, reposted from Middle East Eye, July 18, 2024 They just keep coming. On the weekend, Israel launched another devastating air strike on Gaza, killing at least 90 Palestinians and wounding hundreds more, including women, children and rescue workers. Once again, Israel targeted refugees displaced by its earlier bombs, turning an area it had formally declared a “safe zone” into a killing field. And once more, western powers shrugged their shoulders. They were too busy accusing Russia of war crimes to have time to worry about the far worse war crimes being inflicted on Gaza by their Israeli ally – with weapons they supplied. The atrocity committed at al-Mawasi camp, packed with 80,000 civilians, had the usual Israeli cover story – one rolled out to reassure western publics that their leaders are not the utter hypocrites they appear to be for supporting what the World Court has described as a “plausible genocide.” Israel said it was trying to hit two Hamas leaders – one of them Mohammed Deif, head of the group’s military wing – although Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seemed uncertain as to whether the strike was successful. No one in the western media appeared to wonder why the pair preferred to make themselves a target in an overcrowded, makeshift refugee camp, where they were at huge risk of being betrayed by an Israeli informant, rather than sheltering in Hamas’s extensive tunnel network. Or why Israel deemed it necessary to fire a multitude of massive bombs and missiles to take out two individuals. Is that Israel’s new, expansive redefinition of a “targeted assassination?” Or why its pilots and drone operators continued the strikes to hit emergency rescue crews dealing with the initial destruction. Was there intelligence that Deif was not just hiding in the camp, but had hung around to dig out survivors, too? Or how killing and maiming hundreds of civilians in an attempt to hit two Hamas fighters could ever possibly satisfy the most basic principles of international law. “Proportion” and “distinction” require armies to weigh the military advantage of an attack against the expected toll on civilian life. Biblical vengeance But Israel has torn up the rulebook on war. According to sources within the Israeli military, it now considers it acceptable to kill more than 100 Palestinian civilians in the pursuit of a single Hamas commander – a commander, let us note, who will simply be replaced the moment he is dead. Even if the two Hamas leaders were assassinated, Israel could not have been in any doubt that it was perpetrating a war crime. But it has learned that, the more routine its war crimes become, the less coverage they receive – and the less outrage they provoke. In recent days, Israel has struck several United Nations schools serving as shelters, killing dozens more Palestinians. On Tuesday, another strike in the “safe zone” of al-Mawasi killed 17. According to the UN refugee agency, UNRWA, more than 70 percent of its schools – almost all of them serving as refugee shelters – have been bombed. Last week, western doctors who had volunteered in Gaza said Israel was packing its weapons with shrapnel to maximize injuries to those caught in the blast radius. Children, because of their smaller bodies, were being left with much more severe wounds. Aid agencies cannot properly treat the wounded, because Israel has been blocking the entry of medical supplies into Gaza. Committing war crimes, if western publics have not worked it out by now, is the very point of the “military operation” Israel launched in Gaza in the wake of Hamas’s one-day attack on October 7. That is why there are more than 38,800 known deaths from Israel’s 10-month assault – and likely at least four times that number unrecorded, according to leading researchers writing in the Lancet medical journal this month. That is why it will take at least 15 years to clear the rubble strewn across Gaza by Israeli bombs, according to the UN, and as much as 80 years – and $50 billion – to rebuild homes for the remnants of the enclave’s 2.3 million people still alive at the end. Israel’s twin goals have been biblical vengeance and the elimination of Gaza – a genocidal rampage to drive the terrified population out, ideally into neighboring Egypt. Shoot-everyone policy If that was not clear enough already, six Israeli soldiers recently stepped forward to speak out about what they had witnessed while serving in Gaza – a story the western media has entirely failed to report. Their testimonies, published by the Israel-based publication 972 last week, confirm what Palestinians have been saying for months. Commanders have authorized them to open fire on Palestinians at will. Anyone entering an area the Israeli military is treating as a “no-go zone” is shot on sight, whether man, woman or child. Back in March, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz warned that the Israeli military had created just such “kill zones,” where anyone entering was executed without warning. After months of an Israeli aid blockade that has created a man-made famine, Israel’s military has turned the people of Gaza’s ever-more frantic search for food into a game of Russian roulette. This perhaps explains, in part, why so many Palestinians are unaccounted for – Save the Children estimates some 21,000 children are missing. The soldiers quoted in 972 say the victims of their shoot-everyone policy are bulldozed out of view along routes where international aid convoys pass. A reserve soldier, identified only as S, said a Caterpillar bulldozer “clears the area of corpses, buries them under the rubble, and flips [them] aside so that the convoys don’t see it – [so that] images of people in advanced stages of decay don’t come out.” The soldier also noted: “The whole area [of Gaza where the army operates] was full of bodies… There is a horrific smell of death.” Several of the soldiers reported that stray cats and dogs, denied food and water for months just like Gaza’s population, feed on the dead bodies. The Israeli military has repeatedly refused to publish its open-fire regulations since it was first challenged to do so in the Israeli courts in the 1980s. A soldier named B told 972 that the Israeli army enjoyed “total freedom of action,” with soldiers expected to shoot directly at any Palestinian approaching their positions, rather than a warning shot in the air: “It’s permissible to shoot everyone, a young girl, an old woman.” When civilians were ordered to evacuate from a school serving as a shelter in Gaza City, B added, some mistakenly exited right towards the soldiers, rather than to the left. That included children. “Everyone who went to the right was killed – 15 to 20 people. There was a pile of bodies.” According to B, any Palestinian in Gaza can inadvertently find themselves a target: “It is forbidden to walk around, and everyone who is outside is suspicious. If we see someone in a window looking at us, he is a suspect. You shoot.” ‘Like a computer game’ Drawing on military practices familiar in the occupied West Bank too, the Israeli army encourages its soldiers to shoot even when no one is engaging them. These random, indiscriminate eruptions of fire are known as “demonstrating presence” – or more accurately, terrorizing and endangering the civilian population. In other instances, soldiers open fire just to let off steam, have fun, or, as one soldier put it, “experience the event” of being in Gaza. Yuval Green, a 26-year-old reservist from Jerusalem, the only soldier prepared to be named, observed: “People were shooting just to relieve the boredom.” Another soldier, M, similarly noted that “the shooting is very unrestricted, like crazy” – and not just from small arms. Troops use machine guns, tanks and mortar rounds in a similar, unwarranted frenzy. A, an officer in the army’s operations directorate, pointed out that this mood of utter recklessness extended all the way up the chain of command. Although the destruction of hospitals, schools, mosques, churches and international aid organizations requires authorization from a senior officer, in practice, such operations are almost always approved. A said: “I can count on one hand the cases where we were told not to shoot. Even with sensitive things like schools, [approval] feels like only a formality … No one will shed a tear if we flatten a house when there was no need, or if we shoot someone who we didn’t have to.” Commenting on the mood in the operations room, A said destroying buildings often “felt like a computer game.” In addition, A cast doubt on Israel’s claim that Hamas fighters comprised a high proportion of Gaza’s death toll. Anyone caught in Israel’s “kill zones” or targeted by a bored soldier was counted as a “terrorist.” Burning homes The soldiers also reported that their commanders destroyed homes not because they were suspected of serving as bases for Hamas fighters, but purely out of an urge for revenge against the entire population. Their testimonies confirm an earlier Haaretz report that the army was implementing a policy of torching Palestinian homes after they served their purpose as temporary locations for soldiers. Green said the principle was: “If you move [on], you have to burn down the house.” According to B, his company “burned hundreds of houses.” A policy of wanton, vengeful destruction is similarly implemented – on a far larger scale – by Israel’s fighter pilots and drone operators, explaining why at least two-thirds of Gaza’s housing stock has been left in ruins. There are other deceptions too. One of the stated reasons for Israel being in Gaza is to “bring back the hostages” – many dozens of Israelis who were dragged into Gaza on October 7. That message, however, has apparently not reached the Israeli military. He said he heard other soldiers stating: “The hostages are dead, they don’t stand a chance, they have to be abandoned.” Back in December, Israeli troops shot dead three hostages waving white flags. Reckless shooting into buildings poses the same threat to the lives of hostages as it does to Palestinian fighters and civilians. Such indifference might also explain why the Israeli political and military leadership has been willing to conduct such a comprehensive bombing of buildings and tunnels in Gaza, risking the lives of the hostages as much as Palestinian civilians. Culture of violence The story told by these soldiers in 972 should not surprise anyone – apart from those still desperately clinging to fairytales about Israel’s “most moral army in the world.” In fact, an investigation by CNN on the weekend found that Israeli commanders identified by US officials as committing particularly heinous war crimes in the occupied West Bank over the past decade have been promoted to senior positions in the Israeli military. Their job includes training ground troops in Gaza and overseeing operations there. A whistleblower from the Netzah Yehuda battalion who spoke to CNN said the commanders, drawn from Israel’s religious extremist ultra-Orthodox sector, stoked a culture of violence towards Palestinians, including vigilante-style attacks. As the CNN investigation indicates, the wanton death and destruction in Gaza is very much a feature, not a bug. For decades, the Israeli military has been implementing its inhumane policies towards Palestinians not just in the tiny enclave, but across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem too. Israel has been suffocating Gaza with a siege for 17 years. And since 1967, it has been suffocating the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem with illegal settlements – many of them home to violent Jewish militias – to drive out the Palestinian population. What is new is the intensity and scale of the death and destruction Israel has been allowed to inflict since October 7. The gloves have come off, with the West’s approval. Israel’s agenda – of leaving historic Palestine empty of Palestinians – has been advanced from an ultimate, distant goal to an urgent, immediate one. Snake-like politicians Nonetheless, Israel’s much longer history of violence and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians is about to come sharply into focus, despite the best efforts of Israel to keep our attention fixed on a Hamas “terrorism” threat. The International Court of Justice in the Hague, often referred to as the World Court, is considering two cases against Israel. Best known is the one launched in January, putting Israel on trial for genocide. But on Friday, the World Court is due to issue a ruling on an older case – one that predates October 7. It will pronounce on whether Israel has broken international law by making the occupation of Palestine permanent. While stopping the genocide in Gaza is more pressing, a ruling from the court recognizing the illegal nature of Israel’s rule over Palestinians is equally important. It would give legal backing to what should be obvious: that a supposedly temporary military occupation long ago mutated into a permanent process of violent ethnic cleansing. Such a ruling would provide the context for understanding what Palestinians have been truly up against, while western capitals and western media have gaslit their publics year after year, decade after decade. This week, Oxfam accused the new British government under Keir Starmer of “aiding and abetting” Israel’s war crimes by calling for a ceasefire from one side of its mouth while actively supplying Israel with weapons to continue the slaughter. The Labor government is also dragging its feet on restoring funding to UNRWA, best placed to address the famine in Gaza. At Washington’s behest, Labor is seeking to block efforts by the International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor to issue arrest warrants against Netanyahu and his defense minister, Yoav Gallant, for war crimes. And there are still no signs that Starmer has any plans to recognize Palestine as a state, thus putting a UK marker down against Israel’s ethnic cleansing program. Sadly, Starmer is typical of the West’s snake-like politicians: flaunting his outrage at Russia’s “depraved” attacks on children in Ukraine, while keeping silent on the even more depraved bombing and starvation of Gaza’s children. He vows that his support for Ukrainians “won’t falter.” But his support for Palestinians in Gaza facing a genocide never even started. The Palestinians of Gaza – and the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem – are not just up against a law-breaking, savage Israeli military. They are being betrayed each day afresh by a West that gives such barbarity its blessing. ‘Sign of Things to Come’: Singapore Approves 16 Insects for Human Food Singapore has approved 16 insects as food for humans — becoming the latest country to authorize insect products for human consumption, in what The Guardian described as a move that “paves the way for plates to become wrigglier, leggier and more sustainable” and as “a sign of things to come.” In a July 8 announcement, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) approved the 16 insects, which include silkworm pupa and mealworm, “With immediate effect.” “These insects and insect products can be used for human consumption or as animal feed for food producing animals,” the SFA stated. Countries and entities such as the United Kingdom (U.K.), Australia and the European Union (EU) have already approved some insects for human consumption. However, in the U.S. existing regulations contain few references specifically addressing insects. This regulatory gap has enabled an ecosystem of “alternative protein” startups to enter the insect food market — with the backing of figures such as Bill Gates and government agencies including the United Nations (U.N.) and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the National Science Foundation. “The United Nations Food And Agricultural Organisation (FAO) continues to promote insect consumption as an environmentally friendly way to get protein in your diet — for both humans and their livestock,” The Guardian reported. Proponents of insects as food for humans, including the FAO, argue this will help combat climate change, as insects produce a smaller carbon footprint than traditional livestock. But critics challenge this view. “The justification for insects is to produce protein using fewer inputs: to save the planet by reducing climate change, methane from cows, less pollution,” internist Dr. Meryl Nass, founder of Door to Freedom, told The Defender. “But just because it is protein doesn’t mean it’s good for us.” Nass cited parasites that could be spread by insects, difficulties in digesting insects, and common allergies to chitin — commonly found on the exoskeleton of insects. According to Nass, lax U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, under which many insects can be classified as “Generally Regarded as Safe” (GRAS), “means they don’t require testing” and enables the FDA to “look the other way.” This has opened the door for insect foods to reach consumers. “How long will it take before we learn whether these foods are safe? It could take generations,” Nass said. “Advocates for mass consumption of insect-based foods would like you to believe that bugs have been a reliable source of protein for thousands of years,” said Seamus Bruner, author of “Controligarchs: Exposing the Billionaire Class, their Secret Deals, and the Globalist Plot to Dominate Your Life.” Bruner, who also is director of research at the Government Accountability Institute, told The Defender: “While that is true, malnutrition and disease were also endemic and life expectancies were dramatically lower than they are today. The truth is that beef, pork, poultry and other animal-based foods are the most efficient and healthy sources of protein. These climate fanatics pushing insect-based foods are scaring people into adopting less healthy diets.” Dutch journalist Elze van Hamelen told The Defender that using insect ingredients for pet food also poses a risk to public health, citing a 2019 study that found parasites in 244 of 300 insect farms and pet stores that were investigated. “Feeding pets with parasite-infested insects, especially pets that do not have the physiology to digest bugs, may not be such a good idea,” van Hamelen said. Michael Rectenwald, Ph.D., author of “The Great Reset and the Struggle for Liberty: Unraveling the Global Agenda,” told The Defender, “The insect craze is intimately connected to the U.N.’s Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” Rectenwald cited two SDGs: SDG 2, “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture” and SDG 12, “Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.” “’Sustainability’ is code language for coerced reductions in consumption and forced behavioral modifications,” Rectenwald said. Nass said the U.N., along with the World Economic Forum (WEF), “promote the so-called SDGs, which can supposedly be met if we change our diet.” Yet, “We don’t see the WEF or U.N. attendees eating insects at their meetings.” Nass suggested that one reason behind the shift to insects as food is “to cause emotional harm: to degrade, debase, downgrade human beings” and that beef is “being demonized,” potentially to “weaken the species.” “The idea seems to be to get rid of small producers and create a fully industrialized system of food production that Cargill, ConAgra, PepsiCo will profit from,” she added. “Bill Gates claims his investments in alternative proteins are to save the planet,” Bruner said. “What he does not say is that they are part of a strategy to monopolize the protein industry — for profit — as he lobbies to ban animal-based competition.” Insect Firms in Singapore ‘Educating’ Children About Insects as a Food Source The 16 insects Singapore’s SFA has approved include “various species of crickets, grasshoppers, locusts, mealworms and silkworms,” The Straits Times reported. According to The Guardian, foods containing insects must clearly label this on the packaging, “to indicate the true nature of the product.” The Straits Times reported that local restaurant chain House of Seafood is already “cooking up a menu of 30 insect-infused dishes to give customers more choice,” while other firms have begun “educating consumers” — including children — about insects as a food source for humans. The report cited the example of Altimate Nutrition which, “While waiting for SFA’s regulatory approval … conducted workshops and educational sessions at almost a hundred schools, from pre-schools to institutes of higher learning.” Surveys conducted after the program found that about 80% of students would be willing to try the insects after they are approved, The Straits Times reported. But Bruner said other factors are likely at play in Singapore. “The WEF — perhaps the largest driving force behind so-called ‘alternative proteins’ — frequently touts Singapore’s compliance with Agenda 2030, so the decision to prioritize insect-based foods is not surprising,” he said. EU, U.K., Australia and Other Countries Approve Insects for Consumption Authorities in the EU, U.K. and Australia, among other countries, have also approved certain insects for human consumption. Brussels Signal cited Ermolaos Ververis, scientific officer for the European Food Safety Authority Novel Foods Team, who said the EU has authorized six insects: “Alphitobius diaperinus larvae products, dried mealworms, whole and ground yellow mealworms, whole and ground Grasshoppers, whole and ground crickets, and partially defatted Whole Cricket Powder.” Eight applications are still pending in the EU, where according to EU regulations, foods containing insects must be clearly labeled. Brussels Signal reported that under Horizon Europe, a European Commission — the executive branch of the EU funding program for research and innovation — “insect-based proteins are considered one of the key areas of research.” U.K. authorities have approved four insects for human consumption — yellow mealworm, house cricket, banded cricket and black soldier fly, as “novel foods,” while Australia has approved three species: two varieties of mealworm and a cricket. According to the FAO, there are more than 1,900 “edible insect species.” However, insects don’t appear to be included in the FAO’s Codex Alimentarius — its international food safety guidelines. ‘Nudging’ the Public Toward Acceptance Several studies, including a 2020 report by the European Consumer Organisation, a 2021 YouGov poll and a 2022 report by UBA, Germany’s environmental agency, suggest low demand among the public for consuming foods containing insects. Other studies in 2020 and 2022 suggested people would be more willing to shift their attitudes after being told about the “environmental benefits” of eating insects. The 2020 study suggested that “nudging” — a behavioral science concept supported by the National Science Foundation — could be used to this end. “As humans are a particularly social species, leveraging the social nature may prove particularly useful,” the study said. In a 2021 European Food Safety Authority report, Giovanni Sogari, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Food and Drug at the University of Parma in Italy, suggested, “There are cognitive reasons derived from our social and cultural experiences, the so-called ‘yuck factor’, that make the thought of eating insects repellent to many Europeans. This is because one of the most widely used red food colourings - carmine - is made from crushed up bugs. The insects used to make carmine are called cochineal, and are native to Latin America where they live on cacti. Now farmed mainly in Peru, millions of the tiny insects are harvested every year to produce the colouring. A staple of the global food industry, carmine is added to everything from yoghurts and ice creams, to fruit pies, soft drinks, cupcakes and donuts. It is also used extensively in the cosmetics industry and is found in many lipsticks. Supporters also point out that it is a natural product first discovered and used by the Maya and then the Aztecs more than five centuries ago. They claim that it is far healthier than artificial alternatives such as food colourings made from coal or petroleum by-products. But even fans of carmine agree that it should be more clearly labelled, and there are a growing number of natural red colouring alternatives that don't come from insects. Look for the word "carmine" on a food product that contains it, and you might not actually see it written in the list of ingredients. Instead it might say "natural red four", "crimson lake" or just E120, to give carmine its European Union food additive classification number. "Carmine is an incredibly stable and reliable natural food dye that can be used to create a wide range of colours - pinks, oranges, purples, as well as reds. "A few people have serious allergic reactions to it, but overall it has a great, long-term safety record." Peru now leads the way in production of carmine, and according to the Peruvian Embassy to the UK, the country has a 95% share of the international market. This creates work for no less than 32,600 farmers, the embassy adds. It is the wingless females that are harvested, rather than the flying males. The red colour comes from carminic acid, which makes up almost a quarter of the bugs' weight, and deters predation by other insects. Ms Butler Greenfield says: "Generally the bugs are dried first... nowadays food-grade cochineal dye is put through many filters to remove insect parts." Last year Peru exported 647 tonnes of carmine for a total value of $46.4m (£33m). However, demand is rising and because the supply is finite - it is difficult for Peruvian farmers to substantially boost supplies - the price has soared in recent years. Back in 2013 Peru's exports of carmine totalled 531 tonnes, which was worth $22m. So over the past four years, the price per tonne has risen by 73%. UK-based Premier Foods, which owns brands including Mr Kipling cakes and Bachelor soups, continues to use carmine, but does consider switching to alternative colourings. "We use carmine in some of our products, because it is natural and uniquely provides a particularly stable range of red and pink colours that do not fade," says a Premier Foods spokesman. "[But] we continue to look for alternatives, which in addition to being natural, would also be suitable for vegetarians." Animal rights group Peta would ideally like the use of carmine to be phased out all together. "It reportedly takes up to 70,000 individual insects to produce just 500g of dye, so naturally, it's a product that compassionate consumers will want to avoid. Carmine was originally used to dye materials "Fortunately, the rapid growth in the number of people following a vegan lifestyle is encouraging more and more companies to develop animal-friendly products, so it's never been easier to choose vegan items for which no animal of any size has suffered." One company that in recent years has moved away from carmine is US coffee shop giant Starbucks. Back in 2012 customers complained after it was revealed that Starbucks used carmine in some of its iced coffees, smoothies and cakes. Starbucks responded by saying it would switch from carmine to lycopene, a natural, tomato-based extract. Other natural food colouring alternatives include extracts from berries and beetroot. Yet none are as long-lasting and easy to use as carmine. Beetroots are used to produce a food colouring called betanin For example, betanin, the food colouring obtained from beetroots, degrades when exposed to light, heat and oxygen. It therefore typically only used in foodstuffs that have a short shelf life, or are frozen. Ms Butler Greenfield says it is important to remember that carmine is a natural product that it is a vital source of income for poor farmers in Peru. Eating insects can go from novel to normal in Singapore SINGAPORE: The first time I chomped on a crispy cricket, it was in Thailand, at a night market in Krabi with American friends. This was 2007 and pre-social media, so I wasn’t doing it for the ‘Gram – I did it to say: “Welcome to Southeast Asia, where we eat everything.” Perhaps not everything, or at least not yet. Earlier in July, Singapore approved 16 species of insects as food, from house crickets and silkworms to honey bees and the Giant Rhino beetle grub. That scorpion-tarantula-grasshopper skewer I had in Cambodia might have to wait. My second time was in a Siem Reap restaurant that specialised in bugs. My mum and I sampled the most conspicuously arthropodite dishes on the menu, dreamed up by an ex-Sofitel hotel chef and a French restaurateur. These went onto Facebook with captions like: “SpiderTempura: With great flavour comes great responsibility to eat” and the shocked reactions flowed in. The next few times, it was usually for a lark while strolling street markets across the region, to show off how unfazed I was by ingesting insects. DRIED SEA WORMS IN LAKSA? But I’d like to report that these critters are actually great at conveying flavour. Flash fried like most street snacks are, their delicate exoskeletons, legs and wings become crispy convoys of seasonings and spices. The idea of eating insects isn’t completely new to the Singapore food scene. As local foodie folklore goes, hawkers used to enrich laksa gravy with dried sea worms for a powerful punch of umami. In 2016, the vaunted Native Bar set tongues lapping with its ANTZ elixir: Weaver ants distilled into a concoction of lemongrass gin, coconut yogurt, calamansi and basil, then topped with freeze-dried ants. The drink has since thrilled local and international cocktail connoisseurs, drawing them to the bar for a curious tipple. The growing conscious eating movement will also raise the high-protein profile of this antioxidant-packed, more sustainable meat alternative that emits lower greenhouse gases when farmed. The wellness community will enjoy exploring more gluten-free, low-carb and keto options. According to Brooklyn Bugs founder and chef Joseph Yoon, the cacao taste of mealworms elevates brownies and the nuttiness of cricket powder makes perfect cheesecake sense, so sceptical eaters can let their guards down when insects are disguised into better tasting desserts. The Pandemic Excuse for a Corporatist Coup Jeffrey A. Tucker We’ve just come across a document hosted by the Department of Homeland Security, posted March 2023, but written in 2007, that amounts to a full-blown corporatist imposition on the US, abolishing anything remotely resembling the Bill of Rights and Constitutional law. It is right there in plain sight for anyone curious enough to dig. There is nothing in it that you haven’t already experienced with lockdowns. What makes it interesting are the participants in the forging of the plan, which is pretty much the whole of corporate America as it stood in 2007. It was a George W. Bush initiative. The conclusions are startling. “Quarantine is a legally enforceable declaration that a government body may institute over individuals potentially exposed to a disease, but who are not symptomatic. If enacted, Federal quarantine laws will be coordinated between CDC and State and local public health officials, and, if necessary, law enforcement personnel…The government may also enact travel restrictions to limit the movement of people and products between geographic areas in an effort to limit disease transmission and spread. Authorities are currently reviewing possible plans to curtail international travel upon a pandemic’s emergence overseas. “Limiting public assembly opportunities also helps limit the spread of disease. Concert halls, movie theaters, sports arenas, shopping malls, and other large public gathering places might close indefinitely during a pandemic—whether because of voluntary closures or government-imposed closures. Similarly, officials may close schools and non-essential businesses during pandemic waves in an effort to significantly slow disease transmission rates. These strategies aim to prevent the close interaction of individuals, the primary conduit of spreading the influenza virus. Even taking steps such as limiting person-to-person interactions within a distance of three feet or avoiding instances of casual close contact, such as shaking hands, will help limit disease spread.” There we have it: the pandemic plans. They once seemed abstract. In 2020, they became very real. Your rights were deleted. No more freedom even to have house guests. In those days, the rule was to enforce only three feet of distance rather than six feet of distance, neither of which had any basis in science. Indeed, the actual scientific literature even at that time recommended against any physical interventions designed to limit the spread of respiratory viruses. They were known not to work. The entire profession of public health accepted that. Therefore, for many years before lockdowns wrecked economic functioning, there had been two parallel tracks in operation, one intellectual/academic and one imposed by state/corporate managers. They had nothing to do with each other. This situation persisted for the better part of 15 years. Suddenly in 2020, there was a reckoning, and the state/corporate managers won it. Seemingly out of nowhere, liberty as we have long known it was gone. Back in 2005, I first came across a Bush administration scheme, an early draft of the above, that would have ended freedom as we know it. It was a scheme for combating the bird flu, which officials back then imagined would involve universal quarantines, business and event closures, travel restrictions, and more. It’s a corporatist dream team. Consider ConAgra itself. What is that? It is Banquet, Chef Boyardee, Healthy Choice, Orville Redenbacher’s, Reddi-Wip, Slim Jim, Hunt’s Peter Pan Egg Beaters, Hebrew National, Marie Callender’s, P.F. Chang’s, Ranch Style Beans, Ro*Tel, Wolf Brand Chili, Angie’s, Duke’s, Gardein, Frontera, Bertolli, among many other seemingly independent brands that are all actually one company. Now, ask yourself: why might all these companies favor a plan for lockdowns? Why might WalMart, for example? It stands to reason. Lockdowns are a massive interference with competitive capitalism. They provide the best possible subsidy to big business while shutting down independent small businesses and putting them at a huge disadvantage once the opening up happens. In other words, it is an industrial racket, very much akin to interwar-style fascism, a corporatist combination of big business and big government. Throw pharma into the mix and you see exactly what came to pass in 2020, which amounted to the largest transfer of wealth from small and medium-sized business plus the middle class to wealthy industrialists in the history of humanity. The document is open even about managing information flows: “The public and private sectors should align their communications, exercises, investments, and support activities absolutely with both the plan and priorities during a pandemic influenza event. Continue data gathering, analysis, reporting, and open review.” There is nothing in any of this that fits with any Western tradition of law and liberty. Nothing. It was never approved by any democratic means. It was never part of any political campaign. It has never been the subject of any serious media examination. No think tank has ever pushed back on such plans in any systematic way. The last serious attempt to debunk this whole apparatus was from D.H. Henderson in 2006. His two co-authors on that paper eventually came around to going along with lockdowns of 2020. Henderson died in 2016. One of the co-authors of the original article told me that if Dr. Henderson had been around, instead of Dr. Fauci, the lockdowns would never have taken place. Here we are four years following the deployment of this lockdown machinery, and we are witness to what it destroys. It would be nice to say that the entire apparatus and theory behind it have been fully discredited. But that is not correct. All the plans are still in place. There have been no changes in federal law. Not one effort has been made to dismantle the corporatist/biosecurity planning state that made all this possible. Every bit of it is in place for the next go-around. Much of the authority for this whole coup traces to the Public Health Services Act of 1944, which was passed in wartime. For the first time in US history, it gave the federal government the power to quarantine. Even when the Biden administration was looking for some basis to justify its transportation mask mandate, it fell back to this one piece of legislation. If anyone really wants to get to the root of this problem, there are decisive steps that need to be taken. The indemnification of pharma from liability for harm needs to be repealed. The court precedent of forced shots in Jacobson needs to be overthrown. But even more fundamentally, the quarantine power itself has to go, and that means the full repeal of the Public Health Services Act of 1944. That is the root of the problem. Our pain and suffering will not last forever. Christ Jesus willingly suffered the greatest pain because He knew the end of the story, and so do we. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Christ Jesus willingly suffered the greatest pain because He knew the end of the story, and so do we. Eternity is coming, and our pain and suffering will not be totally forgotten, but the sting will be removed and eternity will be even greater as a result. SFA approves 16 insect species for food; companies gear up to offer new dishes and products Cheryl Tan House of Seafood is cooking up a menu of 30 insect-infused dishes to give customers more choice. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said on July 8 that it has approved 16 species of insects for consumption. The insects include various species of crickets, grasshoppers, locusts, mealworms and silkworms. For industry players in Singapore, who have been gearing up for this moment by experimenting with and developing new insect-based recipes and products, the approval is a long-awaited one. SFA began public consultations on the possibility of allowing 16 species of insects for consumption in 2022, The Straits Times reported then. Insects have been touted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation as a more sustainable alternative to meat, as they have high protein content and produce lower greenhouse gas emissions when farmed. In April 2023, SFA said it would give the green light for these species to be consumed in the second half of 2023. This deadline was later pushed to the first half of 2024. Already, at least two industry players – Singapore-based Future Protein Solutions and Asia Insect Farm Solutions – have decided to call it quits, as the long wait had thrown their business viability into question. But other firms are persisting with their insect offerings. Altimate Nutrition and House of Seafood, for instance, hope to roll their products out to the mass market. Other firms are taking it slow, hoping to introduce insects into consumer diets gradually, such as by incorporating insect powder as an ingredient in protein bars. A bevy of options Mr Francis Ng, House of Seafood restaurant’s chief executive, is cooking up a menu of 30 insect-infused dishes to give customers more choice. Of the 16 approved species, the restaurant will add superworms, crickets and silkworm pupae to some of its seafood dishes, such as salted egg crab. Prior to the approval, the restaurant had been getting five to six calls daily inquiring about its insect-based dishes, Mr Ng said. “Many of our customers, especially young people who are under 30 years old, are very daring. They want to be able to see the whole insect in the dish,” he added. He anticipates that sales from insect-based dishes will increase his revenue by around 30 per cent. Mr Javier Yip, founder of logistics company Declarators, has set up another business and secured a licence to import insects from farms in China, Thailand and Vietnam for sale in Singapore. He will sell a range of bug snacks under the brand name InsectYumz. Several types of insect snacks will be available for a start, including original and tom yum-flavoured crickets and mealworms. There will also be cricket powder, which is a protein powder. These items will soon be listed on his website and other e-commerce sites, as well as supermarkets and restaurants, he added. Asked why he decided to venture into importing insects, Mr Yip said: “I enjoy eating them; in fact, the first time I tried an insect was at a shop in Tampines in the 1990s.” As he runs a logistics company, Mr Yip feels he has the know-how and ability to import these insects into Singapore. He hopes to provide such snacks to those who might enjoy them, particularly young people. Altimate Nutrition, which creates insect food products for humans, has sought to garner interest among younger people by educating consumers over the years. Its main product offerings are cricket-infused protein bars, which come in a range of flavours, from strawberry to banana chocolate. While waiting for SFA’s regulatory approval, the company conducted workshops and educational sessions at almost a hundred schools, from pre-schools to institutes of higher learning, said its co-founder, Mr Hiew Yuen Sheng. “During our workshops, we targeted mostly young people who may be more adventurous when it comes to trying insects, and we educated them on the benefits of insects as a more sustainable protein source,” he said. Surveys conducted after the programme found that around 80 per cent of students polled would be willing to try the insects after they are approved, he added. Altimate Nutrition is hoping to launch its cricket protein bars at eco-friendly store Green Collective as soon as possible, to be the “first movers”, Mr Hiew said. It is collaborating with various food and beverage players – for instance, it supplies House of Seafood with some of its bugs, and is working with Origin Bar to launch a cricket-based cocktail. To carry out more research and development, Altimate Nutrition has formed a joint venture named ProteinInnovation with its supplier, Thai insect farm Global Bugs. ProteinInnovation will look into growing crickets in the most productive, cost-effective way, and the collaboration will help Global Bugs to better tap the Singapore market, said Global Bugs co-founder and chief executive Kanitsanan Thanthitiwat. “While there are many cricket farms in the Thai market, the challenge lies in determining who can produce the largest volume of crickets and in the most cost-effective way,” she said. ProteinInnovation will be raising funds to build another high-tech cricket farm in Thailand, which is capable of growing around 200 tonnes of crickets a year – 20 times more than its current capacity. The crickets will be bred, using automation, in little “boxes”, to alleviate manpower costs, and being modular, these can easily be scaled up, she added. Other companies are waiting to test consumer reception before deciding on their launch plans. Mr Aaron Chen, the chief executive of Werms, which currently sells insects such as crickets and mealworms as pet food, is waiting to see if there is any consumer demand for his insects, before deciding to offer them for human consumption. While these insects are grown in a similar way – whether for humans or for pets – greater biosecurity measures will be needed if they are to be sold for human consumption. A new farm will also have to be set up to prevent cross-contamination, for example, and a new licence will be needed. “While we can scale up rather quickly, there might be quite a bit of costs involved for us to venture into the edible insect market, so we’ll wait and see what happens,” he told ST. Japanese start-up Morus is looking to launch a range of silkworm-based products here, targeting high-end restaurants and consumers, as they are high-income and health conscious, said Mr Ryo Sato, its chief executive. Its products include a pure silkworm powder – which can be used as a food ingredient – along with matcha powder, protein powder and protein bars. Given that Singaporean consumers do not have a history of consuming insects, Morus will also conduct more pop-up events and consumer workshops, Mr Sato said. Once it is able to scale up and reduce costs of production, Morus will start focusing on the mass market, he added. Currently, each 500g bottle of protein powder will cost $248, and can last for a month if consumed daily. But its matcha powder will be priced more affordably, Mr Sato said, without specifying a price. The company is also hoping to work with high-end restaurants, both in Singapore and other parts of South-east Asia and Europe, to integrate Morus’ silkworm-based products into their dishes, before targeting the mass market. Food safety and labelling requirements SFA said on July 8 that those intending to import or farm insects for human consumption or livestock feed must meet its guidelines, which include providing documentary proof that the imported insects are farmed in regulated establishments with food safety controls and are not harvested from the wild. Insects not on SFA’s list of 16 will have to be evaluated to ensure that the species are safe for consumption, the agency said. Companies selling pre-packed food containing insects will also have to label their packaging as such, so that consumers can make informed decisions on whether to purchase the product. Vegetarianism/Veganism is a Globalist Trojan Horse With No Scientific Backing Here's what happens when you remove studies conducted by biased religious zealots from vegetarian research. Anthony Colpo The globalists are using a number of Trojan horses to advance their agendas of population control and "global governance" (the sanitized UN term for worldwide tyranny). Among these Trojan Horses are fake pandemics, climate change and "plant-based" eating, which is the PR-friendly term for vegetarianism and its histrionic offshoot, veganism. The monumental irony with the climate change and plant-based diet phenomena is that believers typically consider themselves not only to be enlightened, but sticking it to the man/corporatism/fascism/etc. The reality is they are being played like puppets by the very forces they think they're rebelling against. Individuals militantly pushing these paradigms, along with all those who became zealous Covidiots during the fake pandemic, are a modern-day embodiment of the "useful idiot." That derogatory term came into widespread use during the Cold War era to describe non-communists that fell for communist propaganda and psychological manipulation. Mariam-Webster defines "useful idiot" as "a naive or credulous person who can be manipulated or exploited to advance a cause or political agenda." Follow the Science - Not the Manipulative Propaganda In yet another shining testament to human gullibility, millions of people have been convinced that nature's most nutrient-dense and evolutionary-correct food - meat - is in fact bad for humans. They have been further conned that avoiding this incredibly healthful food will prevent disease and extend longevity. They have even been convinced that avoiding a food hominids have been eating with great success for over 2.5 million years will somehow make us more peaceful and spiritually elevated beings. The latter argument can easily be dismissed with a few choice names: Adolf Hitler (vegetarian and infamous megalomaniac), Harley "Durianrider" Johnstone (raw vegan and psychopath/narcissist/fraudster/stalker/cyberbully/alleged sex predator/utter scumbag), and Dan Hoyt (vegan restauranteur to the stars and serial public masturbator). The alleged health benefits of meatless malnutrition, in contrast, are given credence by a facade of 'science'. Most of this pseudoscience takes the form of epidemiological prospective and cross-sectional studies in which the vegetarian participants allegedly experienced superior health outcomes over time when compared to non-vegetarian subjects. Most of this epidemiological pseudoscience emanates from two sources: 1) Loma Linda University, which is run by the Seventh-day Adventist religion, whose 'prophetess' Ellen G White espoused a vegetarian diet, and; 2) Oxford University, home to the Oxford Vegetarians, whose members' names feature on many pro-vegetarian 'studies' (Timothy Key and Paul Appleby are two prominent examples). By the way, another infamous Oxford alumni is Peter Singer, the 'bioethicist' (a term used to describe people with incredibly twisted, anti-human ethics) who has waxed much lyrical about animal welfare yet sees nothing wrong with bestiality or pedophilia. The studies pumped out by these entities are heavily-biased, confounder-prone and easily-debunked garbage that I've dismantled numerous times over the years. However, it's always nice to see published confirmation of what I've been saying all along. In 2014, the International Journal of Cardiology published a systematic review and meta-analysis you almost certainly haven't heard about because it doesn't support the globalist anti-meat agenda. Authored by UK researchers not from Oxford, it featured a pooled analysis of eight studies encompassing 183,321 participants. Six were prospective cohort studies and 2 were observational cohort studies "where it was not clear if their design was prospective or retrospective," which should give you some idea of the quality of research used to prop up "plant-based" eating. One of those studies involved Japanese monks, the other SDAs in the Netherlands. Neither featured a non-vegetarian 'control' sample within the same population; instead, these studies simply used standardized mortality rates for the surrounding population. Adjustment for confounders was poor. Six studies adjusted for potential confounders, while the use of adjustment was not clear in the two aforementioned studies. Only two studies adjusted for BMI, and five adjusted for smoking status. True adherence to vegetarian or non-vegetarian diets in these studies is unknown, as some involved a single questionnaire administered at the start of the study. The results? All-cause mortality: Three of 8 studies involved Seventh-day Adventist cohorts. All three Adventist cohorts demonstrated significant associations between vegetarian diet and reduced all-cause mortality, whereas the 4 non-Adventist studies examining all-cause death did not show any mortality reduction in vegetarians. Ischaemic heart disease or cardiac adverse events: Two of the 3 Adventist cohorts demonstrated significant associations between vegetarian diet and reduced cardiac adverse events, whereas the non-Adventist studies each failed to show any benefit in vegetarians. Cerebrovascular disease (stroke): One Adventist cohort showed significant reduction in cerebrovascular events while the other did not; when pooled there was no significant difference. There was no significant difference in cerebrovascular disease in any of the four non-Adventist studies. The authors concluded: "Data from observational studies indicates that there is modest cardiovascular benefit, but no clear reduction in overall mortality associated with a vegetarian diet. This evidence of benefit is driven mainly by studies in SDA, whereas the effect of vegetarian diet in other cohorts remains unproven." A 2016 meta-analysis of 108 cross-sectional and prospective cohort studies by Italian researchers returned a similar finding. Among Adventist vegetarian cohorts, the pooled risk of all-cause mortality was 0.84; among Non-Adventist vegetarians it was 1.04 (less than 1.0 represents reduced risk, greater than 1.0 represents increased risk). For Adventist vegetarians, the pooled risk of breast cancer mortality was 0.79; among Non-Adventist vegetarians it was 1.40. Among studies rated as medium quality, the all-cause mortality risk for vegetarians was 0.93; in studies rated as high quality, the risk was 1.05. So vegetarian diets only show a mortality benefit in lower quality studies involving Seventh-day Adventists. Why is that? Confounders, my little grasshoppers, confounders. SDA members are encouraged to not only avoid meat, but to abstain from smoking, non-medicinal drugs and alcohol, and to have regular exercise, sufficient rest and maintain stable psychosocial relationships. As with most religions, adherence to these recommendations varies widely. Researchers have found intensity of religious involvement (e.g. higher church attendance) correlates with lower rates of substance abuse, higher likelihood of marriage and lower rate of divorce, and lower all-cause mortality. As the UK researchers noted, "the non-dietary factors (confounders) in SDA lifestyle may be responsible for the risk reduction among the vegetarian studies." In other words, the SDA studies are not showing a health benefit of vegetarianism; they are showing a health benefit of religiosity. More devout followers are not just more likely to abstain from meat - they are more likely to abstain from smoking, drugs, overeating and other intemperate lifestyle practices. While they are by no means guilt-free entities with exemplary ethics, the fact remains most major religions do feature at least some beneficial lifestyle prescriptions, including temperance, moderation, monogamy/avoidance of promiscuity and charity/community above wealth accumulation/self-aggrandizement. Few people want to admit it in this self-entitled, instant gratification-oriented age, but there's a lot to be said for not drinking and eating to excess, not smoking and doing drugs, and not staying out late indiscriminately fighting and fornicating. When asked for his thoughts on the latest announcement, Foo Maosheng, who has been snacking on insects for years, noted that reactions to the news this time are more pronounced, but "it is as expected". He also sensed that younger people appear to be more open to trying insects as food. Nevertheless, he shared that he is "excited", and "can't wait to purchase" the products off the shelves. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has started looking to allow the import and sale of insects and insect products for human consumption and animal feed in Singapore. This means that some time in the near future, Singaporeans might be able to buy such products off local shelves and consume them wherever and whenever they want here. The revelation that some people here might be crunching on the critters daily sent netizens into a frenzy of shock and disgust, but one Singaporean welcomed this piece of news. "I actually was quite happy that they [the government] are actually allowing this to happen now," says Foo Maosheng. Like Rice Krispies Foo has been eating and incorporating insects into his diet since 2015. He got his first taste when a colleague brought back some fried bamboo worms from Thailand. Foo does not hold the same apprehension towards insects most people do. As an entomologist studying bugs and other creepy-crawlies at the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (National University of Singapore), eating insects, or entomophagy, as it's scientifically termed, is not a new concept to him. He shared that prior to his first taste of insects, he was already aware of what it could potentially taste like, and thus when the opportunity presented itself, it was simply a moment of "okay, now that it's available for me, [there's] a chance to try, so just go ahead and try it". "Even if I'm not an entomologist, I think I'll still be open to eating [insects]," Foo reflects. Keeping a cockroach as a pet Foo's fascination with bugs started as a young child, as is common among kids. Unlike others though, this interest did not fade into adulthood. While other children frolicked around the playground, Foo recalls that he could typically be found crouched among the bushes and grass, in search of insects to collect and bring home. A core memory for him is keeping a cockroach as his first "pet'. Seven-year-old Foo had found it in his home, and later lured it with a piece of cut apple. He kept the cockroach for around a week in a small plastic container before another insect, a caterpillar, caught his attention. He sustained this interest in bugs as he grew up, and Foo eventually went on to study environmental biology at the National University of Singapore. 2015 was the year Foo tried insects for the first time, sparking an all new gastronomic journey for him. In search of other insects to try and new exotic flavour additions to his palate, he ventured online to search if any company in Singapore sells or distributes the products, but to no avail. This is because the import and sale of insects for human consumption has not been authorised by SFA. Foo later discovered online shops that sell the edible products he was looking for. One in particular, Thailand Unique, is located in the land of smiles but ships worldwide. Eating it "like snacks" Now, Foo purchases various packs of edible bugs from Thailand Unique once a year. Each silver ziploc pack, adorned with labels with pictures of the bugs it contains, are actually rather affordable, costing around S$4 to S$5 per pack, excluding shipping fees. One pack can last Foo two to three weeks. Here is Foo's stash, which includes bugs such as crickets, sago worms, weaver ants, and cicadas. Photo by Ashley Tan Foo shares that he munches on the insects like snacks and describes the texture as similar to nuts or biscuits. He either eats them straight from the pack, or sprinkles them over his food dishes, like croutons on a salad, or furikake over his rice. Occasionally, he bakes a mean pandan cake infused with bits of cricket. This, he explains, introduces a bit of a nutty taste to the sweet dessert. When asked about his less-than wary reception to eating bugs, Foo ponders for awhile, and acknowledges that he is generally quite curious and open to trying new cuisines and foods. "I do get that from my family. They always notice that I'm always trying new foodstuff instead of always going for the same popular or common food dishes that we can eat. I'm not a foodie, just always open to trying new stuff." Foo has tried introducing edible insects to his family, friends and colleagues, to mixed reactions. While some are willing to give it a try, others, more squeamish, keep the bugs at an arm's length. "I have friends who say 'I'd rather die than eat that'." Thus far, none of the people he knows have taken to eating insects quite like he has, and he recognises that he might one of the very few in Singapore who eats them regularly. Bug benefits You might be wondering why Foo chooses edible insects over conventional snacks like chips and nuts. After all, the edible bugs aren't exactly more flavourful than the latter, and they aren't as easily accessible for purchase either. Foo elaborates that the main draw for him is that being much more protein-rich, which makes bugs a healthier choice than other snacks. "Better than eating too much carbs," he remarks. The environmental benefits of bugs as food, over meat, for example, are a boon for him as well. Agriculture is currently a significant contributor to global warming. Meanwhile, insect cultivation uses only a fraction of the land and other resources required for the farming of meat like beef and chicken. Crickets produce up to 80 per cent less methane than cows, according to a study by researchers in the Netherlands. Additionally, replacing half of the meat eaten around the world with mealworms and crickets can reduce the use of farmland by one-third. For Foo, Singapore's goal to produce 30 per cent of its food supply locally by 2030 aligns with his lifestyle of entomophagy as well. Reviewing bugs: Fishy and salty After expounding on the advantages of eating bugs, there's no way I can leave without at least trying some out, especially after Foo very kindly dug out his whole stash for the interview. I've tried crickets and bamboo worms before — Foo calls them "starters", as they're the most common bugs that those new to entomophagy typically try first. These usually have a nutty or salty taste, similar to dried salted fish. Although Foo takes pains to elaborate on the different tastes of each bug — for example, cicadas have more earthy notes while the sago worms taste more fatty — the bug-eating amateur that I am finds that they all taste fishy and salty to me. Photo by Ashley Tan After trying some of the tamer specimens, Foo enthusiastically whips out a scorpion and very large water bug from their packs, much to my apprehension. The water bug, he says, isn't very appetising, so I tentatively nibble on a very crisp leg, which ended up not really tasting like anything. Photo by Ashley Tan Interestingly, according to Foo, the scorpion apparently tastes like bak kwa with a bitter aftertaste. As I take a chomp of its torso, my unrefined palate is unable to taste the meaty flavour. To me, it simply tastes salty and slightly charred. Photo by Ashley Tan The most exotic specimen Foo has eaten is the zebra tarantula, which costs around S$16. A single tarantula comes uniquely packaged in a small can. Although I didn't get to try the tarantula, it supposedly tastes like crab meat, something which celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has testified to before. Photo by Ashley Tan Foo assures that one does not need to fear eating venomous invertebrates like the scorpion and tarantula, as the venom is deactivated once they're cooked. However, he cautions that some people might suffer allergic reactions to the remnants of the venom left behind. Overall, my verdict on entomophagy: It was a unique experience, and I would recommend trying it at least once. Who knows, you might take a liking to it too. Normalising eating bugs Foo foresees bugs becoming a staple in his diet, whenever it becomes readily available in Singapore. He notes that with inflation and rising prices of protein sources like chicken and eggs, insects would be a good alternative. Clearly from how some netizens responded to SFA's announcement in October, a good number of people in Singapore may disagree with Foo's sentiment. Healing the Divide's Iris Koh even started a petition against SFA's announcement, calling it a threat to public safety. Thus far, it has garnered over 600 signatures. While Foo is able to somewhat understand the netizens' perspectives, he believes that permitting the sale and consumption of insects is a progressive move. "So when you bring this in, people may think, oh yeah, we're becoming third world. Because we are bringing that way of living from a third world country into our country. So it's understandable, but I wouldn't say is exactly that we are becoming a third world country. But it's just that we are actually moving forward ahead in order to make sure that our human population, at least in Singapore, will be able to meet that protein requirements." Foo concedes that normalising entomophagy here will not be an easy feat — he acknowledges that there exists a "gross factor", and that the unsavoury image of bugs has been perpetuated by media and will be challenging to purge. "It will definitely take some time," he said, and adds that educating the public, including children, on the benefits of entomophagy and debunking the stigma surrounding creepy-crawlies might go a long way. Foo sums up his thoughts towards the naysayers in a Facebook post responding to Koh's petition: "All in all, eating insects is not a last resort, entomophagy and the import of insects for human consumption is part of Singapore food security and food sustainability. No one is forcing you to eat insects, it is an option that is open to you."
