Through the mud among the clouds: One of the oldest cities in the world that first started to grow in height

On the mountain plateau of Hadramaut, raised at 1370 meters, there is the oldest city of solitaires in the world. Although it has existed for 7 thousand years, this city in Yemen was the first in the world, back in the 16th century, to apply the concept of vertical construction.

Mud mixed with hay is the basis for shaping the bricks from which the buildings in Shibam were built.

The position of the city protects it from the frequent overflows of the nearby river, and the city grows in height, in order to preserve the fertile land in the desert.

20 years ago, the state took over the maintenance of the city, and since 1982 Šibam has been under the protection of UNESCO.

All the airstrikes on #Yemen took place during a surge in bombings in the first three months of the year, as a ceasefire went into effect in April.

The Saudi-led international coalition destroyed over 14,300 residences, 12 hospitals, 64 schools and 22 power stations in Yemen last year, according to the Eye for Humanity Centre for Rights and Development.
