The Execution of Marcellus “Khalifah” Williams for a Crime he Did Not Commit The state of Missouri murdered Marcellus “Khaliifah” Williams on Tuesday, September 24th, at 6 pm central time. His last meal was chicken wings and tater tots; his last words were, “All praise be to Allah in every situation!” His execution was the third execution in Missouri this year and the 100th since Missouri reinstated capital punishment in 1989. Khaliifiah had hundreds of thousands of supporters behind him worldwide for decades. Millions making calls online and signing his petitions, hundreds in person bringing their grievances to the Missouri Supreme Court, and the prosecution lawyers AND family of Lisha Gayle, the social worker and former newspaper reporter who was murdered during a burglary of her home, whom this case revolves around, calling for the death penalty to be dismissed during this case. Khaliifiah has also held his innocence since the beginning of this trial in 1998, with no forensic evidence supporting Khaliifah as the offender. Each time he was set to be executed, his execution was halted due to further DNA and forensic research, which never got to conclude before his death, nor did the impending Supreme Court case. Khaliifah never had a fair trial. When first tried in 2001, he was not granted his constitutional rights to a fair jury. Instead, Black jurors were barred from entering the jury because they “looked like Williams.” In his reasoning for going forward with Williams’ execution, Gov. Parsons said that Williams had “exhausted due process and every judicial avenue.” However, Parsons denied Khaliifah’s clemency request to change his sentence to life in prison and also rejected a request to cancel the execution so that a lower court could make a new determination about the discriminatory circumstances of his 2001 jury. Gov. Parsons has never granted clemency for a death penalty case. According to the Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC), 16 prisoners have been executed in 8 states in the United States this year, and 48 more executions are scheduled throughout 2024. The death penalty and the cruelty of cases like Marcellus “Khaliifah” Williams exemplify the systemic racism and throughlines of enslavement that are still housed within the U.S. Criminal Justice System today. Capital Punishment has been around since enslavement, with states like North Carolina using it as a way to squash rebellions and those working to free enslaved individuals. The Jim Crow Era continued with lynchings and public executions seemingly becoming interchangeable, with almost all cases of the death penalty being against Black men. And with the 1990s era of mass incarceration, the war on drugs, and a renewed surge of the death penalty – The United took the reins of the highest incarceration population in the world. Today, despite making up 13% of the U.S. population, Black folks make up 42% of those on death row (according to a 2020 Prison Policy Initiative Report). Robert Dunham, the DPIC Executive Director, writes, “What is broken or intentionally discriminatory in the criminal legal system is visibly worse in death-penalty cases. Exposing how the system discriminates in capital cases can shine an important light on law enforcement and judicial practices in vital need of abolition.” The disparities found in Khaliifah’s case are ones systemically embedded in the groundwork of death penalty trials and throughout the entire criminal justice system in the U.S., with many other past cases resurfacing because of Khaliifah’s murder. Like many others, I recount these facts about Khaliifah with tears running down my face and anger in my heart – and all I can think about is time. Khaliifah spent two decades in prison for a crime he did not commit. President Biden sits in a long line of masterminds that got us to the prison industrial complex that we have today, with many who were sentenced to death while Biden was gunning for the 1994 Crime Bill, still awaiting their fate. A prison industrial complex that has not only murdered and harmed millions of Black and Brown people in the U.S. for centuries but has weaved its web throughout the world, implementing torture, starvation, and capital punishment of its own sort throughout places like Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen, Sudan, the Congo. And as we run into a new election cycle fueled by feminism and a new wave of young organizers ready to believe in the system at large because of who is heading it, I must ask, where is feminism in this? Where is feminism when we have so many women as elected officials in the U.S. who could not even utter his name, not the name of any individual who the heinous system has touched? Where is feminism as we look out onto almost a year of genocide and nearly 76 years of occupation in Palestine? Where is feminism when our tax dollars go towards the public execution of innocent mothers, fathers, and children who got no jury, no trial, and no time? U.S. empire’s Nazistic foreign policies show where the ideology of our ruling class is going Zionism, and the fascist Banderite ideology that rules Ukraine, represent different wings of the same larger ideology. This ideology is the one of Lebensraum, which developed through the same historical trend behind colonialism. It’s a primitive type of extractivist worldview, one that says certain groups of superior people are entitled to land from inferior others. Like how the Zionists have relocated and murdered Palestinians to steal their territory and resources, the Banderites have been collectively punishing the Russian-speaking Donbass people with the goal of doing the same thing. Ukrainian officials, consistent with their love for the Third Reich and its genocidal beliefs, have articulated a desire to ethnically cleanse the Russian speakers. In that scenario, where the Donbass has its self-determination taken away and its people are forced to leave, the deserving ones who have the Ukrainian dialect will get the leftover territory. Like Zionism, though, Banderism is self-destructing, pursuing desperate military adventures that keep strategically backfiring. And because both the Palestinians and the Russians have essentially already won their respective anti-imperialist wars, the savagery of Zionism and Banderism is going to become redirected towards the empire’s core. It’s this process, where the Nazistic brutality of U.S. foreign policy gets turned inward as the empire declines, that we in the USA need to watch closely for our own safety. We can expect the fanatics within Zionism and Banderism to start waging war against antiwar actors in the United States, and our government to facilitate this domestic terror campaign. We’re already seeing it happen, with Ukraine’s fascist regime putting U.S. citizens on its assassination list and Zionists committing terrorist attacks against student protesters. What we need to understand is that none of the future violence we’ll see from these extremist groups is incidental, or disconnected from the liberal hegemony. The liberal hegemony is Hitlerite in essence, and this reality becomes clearer by the day. When we see liberals support the genocide against Gaza, or portray Ukraine as something other than a fascist state, it’s part of this shift where the American ruling class ideology comes to more nakedly resemble its Nazi counterpart. U.S. imperialism and Nazism have never truly been separable; Nazism took direct example from what the U.S. did to Native Americans, U.S. finance capital supported Hitler, and Washington incorporated Nazis into its imperial operations following the war. Zionism has been fundamentally connected to all of this, with Zionists depending on antisemitism to make the core of their demagogic argument. Today, as the empire wages proxy wars through states that represent each of these Lebensraum ideologies, there’s an effort by liberals to separate Zionism from Nazism. To argue that it’s offensive to compare Zionism to Nazism, or more commonly to argue that Ukraine lacks the genocidal nature of the “Israeli” settler state. Because there’s so much support for Palestine, and relatively little awareness about the Nazi influence within Ukraine, many liberals are promoting the “I stand with Palestine and Ukraine” position. This is a sneaky way to propagate the ideology of our ruling class, which depends on confusion and obfuscation. Monopoly finance capital, and the deep state that’s tasked with advancing its interests, need us not to know how to recognize fascism. They need the elements of the population that have partial revolutionary consciousness to be limited in their outlook, and only recognize certain parts of the fascist threat while being led towards backing fascism elsewhere. Another example of this is when liberals promote Trump derangement syndrome. They seek to sell Kamala Harris as an alternative towards fascism, when in fact Harris is the most fascistic candidate. It’s Harris who has the primary backing of monopoly finance capital, because Harris would be the more effective puppet and create more favorable conditions for the ruling class. We need to understand that Harris represents a continuation of the particularly destructive current within the imperial apparatus which Hillary Clinton embodied. Clinton’s backers picked Harris as a replacement because Harris comes from the same upbringing and ideology that drove Clinton to orchestrate the destabilization of the Arab world, and to wage regime change wars that threw multiple countries into deadly chaos. Trump isn’t necessarily invested in carrying this cataclysmic project to its completion; Harris absolutely is. Harris is the ideal psychological personality for being manipulated into waging wars, which is enough to make Harris more dangerous. A Harris win would be followed by new false flag unrest outbreaks in the style of January 6, which get used to expand repression and ready the country for new big conflicts. Anybody voting for Harris with the hope of fighting fascism is being led towards aiding fascism in the most substantial way possible. These kinds of trickery let the liberal fascists keep advancing their designs. Which have the same material character as what you’d expect from an outward Nazi regime, but get presented as something progressive. Even though the Democratic Party has been propagating war and genocide, degrowing the economy so that it can sacrifice the underclass, and getting us ready for a purge on dissent by persecuting Uhuru, the prevailing left-wing notion is that the Democrats are the preferable leadership. Alternatively, leftists have been arguing that the Democratic Party’s core base is what we should prioritize within movement-building, even though this base represents an increasingly small and pro-imperialist middle class minority. We’ll defeat liberal fascism not by convincing liberals that they have a friend in us, but by building a united front and a mass base that’s opposed towards monopoly capital. That shares an interest in combating the degrowth austerity agenda, and the wars which connect with this austerity. The pro-genocide liberals are building a sort of coalition of their own, one that’s held together by a shared desire for preventing all real progress. This reactionary united front includes everyone from the liberal technocrats who control the state, to the “groyper” Hitlerites, to the anti-woke culture warriors, to the radical liberals. It’s possible for someone to be a self-described anti-capitalist while helping the liberal fascists, because they don’t need you to like our socioeconomic system. They just need you to work against the goal of uniting monopoly capital’s enemies. Whether it’s groypers peddling their “Jewish question”; or liberals saying we need to vote for genocide; or radical liberals scorning the masses for being too conservative; it all acts to disrupt the effort at uniting humanity. And as long as a united front against monopoly capital is kept weak enough, then the power balance will stay in the favor of the monopolists, and they’ll be able to advance their anti-human goals. In global terms, this balance has already come to essentially be against the favor of our class enemies. The international anti-imperialist forces truly won a long time ago, and are now merely working towards the inevitable outcome where they’ve kicked the imperialists out. For this reason, the anti-imperialists in the empire’s core are so much closer to winning than it may look like if you don’t know about this global shift. On a macro scale, the imperial structure is growing weaker, and is increasingly being confronted with what happens when you can’t sustain a system’s foundations. American capitalism’s crisis of overproduction is at a point where another economic meltdown, bigger than 2008, has become imminent. The suffering, and in many cases death, that’s going to come from this crisis is not a good thing; our efforts to take advantage of the system’s upheavals are where the hope in this comes from. Our ruling class wants us to only see the bad within our situation, and be too overwhelmed to fight. Then the nihilistic, morally bankrupt, and gleefully destructive ideology which is our ruling class ideology can be what defines events with the imperial center. And many more people than otherwise will lose their lives in imperialism’s next wars. Most of the USA’s people don’t want these things to happen, though. This is the weakness within the ruling class ideology that we need to take advantage of. The bulk of our society can’t internalize its anti-human beliefs, because most of the country’s people lack a material investment in continuing the imperial system. Their interest is in workers revolution, which entails uniting all societal elements that oppose monopoly capital and uniting our society with the “enemy” countries. Our ruling class wants us to forsake this progress. They want us to instead either conclude that everything is hopeless, or join with the rulers in their efforts at promoting war and anti-human technocracy. Footage of the aftermath filmed by CNN showed parts of an explosive device that Trevor Ball, a former US Army explosive ordnance disposal technician, confirmed were from a GBU-39 small diameter bomb. Who is Yahya Sinwar and why did Hamas appoint him? The New Arab Staff07 August, 2024 Hamas announced Yahya Sinwar as the new head of its political bureau succeeding the late Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Tehran last week. Sinwar has long been shrouded in mystery. His life includes spending over two decades in Israeli imprisonment, holding top positions in both Hamas's military and political wings and setting up the Majd internal security organisation that targets and kills alleged Palestinian collaborators. His appointment on Tuesday follows a consensus within Hamas's leadership and Shura Council, underscoring the movement's support for Sinwar, one of the most wanted men by Israel, which accuses him of being the mastermind behind the 7 October attacks. Who is Yahya Sinwar? Born on 19 October 1962 in the Khan Younis refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, 61-year-old Sinwar, known as Abou Ibrahim, has largely remained out of the public eye. He attended the Islamic University of Gaza, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in the Arabic language, according to a biography distributed by Hamas. During his life as a student, he became involved in politics, landing him in Israeli jail in 1988 for 23 years after he was charged with establishing Hamas's internal security wing, al-Majd, which was responsible for identifying and executing alleged Palestinians who collaborated with Israel. He was also charged with involvement in orchestrating attacks against Israeli targets, leading to his conviction and sentencing to multiple life terms in prison. Before his release in 2011, as part of the Shalit prisoner exchange deal, which was delayed until Israel accepted to add his name to the list, he was able to rally and unite Palestinian prisoners and hold meetings between them which went undetected by Israeli intelligence. He also reportedly learned Hebrew while in prison, according to an account by a former Fatah prisoner who had served time with Sinwar. Following his release, Sinwar quickly rose to prominence, serving two terms as Hamas leader in Gaza. Despite his low public profile, he was a key figure in Hamas's military and political strategies, forging strong ties with regional allies such as Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah. He played a key role in organising the Great March of Return and Breaking the Siege protests in Gaza in 2018, which drew international attention to the struggles of Palestinians and saw international calls to pressure Israel into lifting its blockade on Gaza. In 2015, the US placed him on the list of a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). In May 2021, he rose to prominence for leading the "Sword of Jersulem" attack on Israel in response to escalating Israeli violence in Shiekh Jarrah and the West Bank. During the 11-day onslaught on Gaza, Israeli air strikes reportedly targeted homes in Gaza belonging to Sinwar and his brother. However, Sinwar appeared to emerge unscathed. Following a long speech in which he said that he was triumphant in the face of Israel’s attempt to assassinate him, he walked home. Sinwar was married in 2012 and has three children. He is believed to be in Gaza but has not made any public appearances since 7 October. Gideon Levy, a columnist for Israeli daily Haaretz, wrote in 2021: "Sinwar spent 22 years in prison, just a little less than Nelson Mandela. "There he learned fluent Hebrew, and it is a shame Israelis are not exposed to that. In Hebrew, he sounds more human. In Hebrew, he once told the Israeli journalist Yoram Binur he was willing to discuss a long-term hudna, or truce, with Israel, and maybe the next generations will progress from there." Separately, in televised comments, political bureau member Osama Hamdan said that Sinwar's appointment "confirms the unity of the movement and its awareness of the dangers it faces, and to confirm that the policy of assassinations committed by the enemy against our leadership and resistance will not succeed in breaking the back of the resistance or in weakening it". Lamis Andoni, a Palestinian journalist, writer, and academic who led the launch of The New Arab as editor-in-chief, explained that Sinwar's selection was "unanimous", adding that Hamas was choosing a chief who was a "fighter" and had been leading the battle directly from Gaza. "It was difficult to reach a consensus on anyone else, as the key decision-makers are based inside Gaza because of their role in fighting Israel," Andoni told TNA. "Sinwar was a very strong candidate due to his leadership in the fighting and his popularity." Research shows a link between blue light and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) production during the follicular phase directly preceding ovulation. During ovulation, Luteinizing Hormone, Estrogen and FSH all rise. Blue light can increase the levels of all of these hormones, so exposure to brighter blue light during the full moon could certainly predispose women to ovulation at that time. But far more persuasive than that little sexist aside into women’s monthly mood swings, is historical and contemporary research that indicates that the prevalence of artificial lighting has had significant impacts on mental health, potentially supporting the concept of moon madness. Studies have found that excessive exposure to artificial light at night can disrupt circadian hormonal rhythms, leading to increased risks of psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and PTSD. A study published in Nature Mental Health involving over 85,000 participants revealed that those exposed to high levels of nighttime light experienced a 30% increase in depression risk. This effect was found to be consistent across various demographics (finally! not sexist at all!) and living environments, reinforcing the idea that artificial light exposure at night is a significant risk factor for mental health disorders​. It helps to put this all into perspective and understand why it actually happens. You’re on an SSRI and it’s too much light at night In the morning you’re meant to naturally be exposed to sunlight, which should stimulate the production of various daytime hormones including serotonin, dopamine, adrenaline, cortisol, insulin, testosterone, estrogen, etc. Now, serotonin is the precursor to melatonin, a nighttime hormone. But actual production of melatonin from serotonin is only stimulated by darkness. If we leave the lights on after sunset we’ll produce less melatonin that night, which means we won’t metabolize some of the serotonin floating around into melatonin. Which means we’ll have more serotonin than we need left over. And what if we take some melatonin to help get to sleep since the light prevented us from making enough? The same thing will happen, but it will be worse. Because in that case we’ll need to convert even less serotonin into melatonin. And even if the excess serotonin were metabolized away, light itself directly stimulates serotonin production (along with all the other hormones I mentioned earlier). What happens if serotonin levels rise higher than they should? It’s like being on an SSRI, which stands for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. What an SSRI does is prevent serotonin from being recycled by neurons after it’s released, so it leaves more serotonin inside of synapses in the brain. Basically there’s more serotonin left hanging around, just like we see with extended blue light exposure at night, when we do not recycle or convert enough serotonin into melatonin (and at the same time we stimulate even more production, so it’s actually even worse than an SSRI). What does high serotonin do? Chronically elevated serotonin will lead to increased cortisol production, prolactin excess, and disrupted levels of thyroid hormone, growth hormone, sex hormones, oxytocin, and insulin (what it doesn’t do is help prevent or treat any psychiatric disease despite the decades of marketing to the contrary - see many excellent exposes like The Emperor’s New Drugs).
