• If you don't recognize this #flower, I'm sure you've heard of it. The #PurpleConeflower or #EchinaceaPurpureaMoench is a popular plant for its immune boosting, anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties. All parts of this plants are edible, but only the flower petals are palatable though, a bit bitter. It's also loaded with antioxidants and although it's been used since the dawn of time to treat many common ailments, there's very little scientific literature to back it up.

It's definitely one plant you'll want to add to your memory banks, because it treats very common injuries and infections we all get. This includes everything from minor cuts to bug bites, to urinary tract infections to the common cold. On top of that some believe it also has a calming effect, which helps with depression.

  • #Alfalfa is mostly known as feed for livestock, which is why I wasn't surprised to find it growing wild at #WarsingDam in #NorthDakota. It's also super nutritious for us as well and is considered a #SuperFood, because of the high levels of essential nutrients and fiber it provides and it's loaded with powerful #antioxidants.

Because it's so popular as cow or horse feed, many would never guess it blesses us with these beautiful blooms. Every part of the plant above the ground can be eaten or steeped into a tea and the seeds can be ground and mixed in with flour to heighten the nutritional profile.

  • The #WoodRose or #Rosawoodsii is not only beautiful, but can be a friend if you know it's uses. I came across this beauty in @NorthDakota, so it has a wide range for cultivation and can be found most anywhere in #NorthernAmerica. The young leaf shoots and flower petals can be eaten raw or steeped into a tea. All parts of this plant has a use medicinally and as an edible as well.

The leaves can also be chewed into a poultice to relieve muscle aches, as well as for minor cuts, bites and even as an antifungal. The roots and inner bark have been used to treat the flu and diarrhea. The fruit is used to ease your cough, it has an unusually high levels of fatty acids and has possible promise as an antitumoral. The list goes on and I hope to have wet your whistle, so you start to check out the local plants in your area. You'll be amazed at the free medicine available to you for free.

It is #NaturalMedicines like these that we need to know about, so we don't allow the #PharmaceuticalCompanies takes the properties of these natural miracles and patent them, forcing us to pay an arm and a leg to get these compounds through them. It's also why we cannot let our #government give them too much power by banning many of these substances their natural forms, taking away more of our independence.

  • This is the #SwampRoseMallow or #HibiscusMoscheutos. I was lucky to happen across this beauty, because it was growing along a lake shore I have been walking for nearly 10 years and had never seen it there before. This particular year the water levels were quite a bit higher than normal, allowing for the conditions she needed to grow. This was my first time coming across this family of flower in the wild before and was quite excited when I saw it. I now wish I had the foresight to take more photos of it though.

All parts of this plants are edible with a mild flavor and each has it's own medicinal uses as well. The flower itself, which spans a good 6-8 inches in diameter can be used topically for its anti-inflammatory and antihistamine properties. The leaves when budding or young can be eating either raw, cooked or even steeped into a #tea. This is used to sooth your cough and sore throats and some digestive issues as well.

The stems can be made into a tea as well and has been used traditionally to treat #UrinaryTractInfections. The seeds are edible as well and after maturing and turning dark brown they can be used to make a tea or roasted to be used as a naturally decaffeinated coffee substitute.
