April Schmidt was my 9th grade World History teacher. She was the type of teacher who could see something in me that I couldn’t yet see, something that now 48-year-old Michael is grateful for tremendously.
She encouraged me to spend the summer after 9th grade in Germany. She encouraged me to serve as a Page in the Senate of Virginia during 10th grade. I was passionate about history, which lead me on a journey to state and national competitions where I presented I the history of vaccines and the struggle for peace in Israel/Palestine. She cheered me and my team on as wee advanced through our competitions.
She pushed me to not only learn, but to learn how to be me.
She passed away from cancer on Christmas Eve 1991. Losing Mrs. Schmidt was devastating - she was my champion and my mentor.
Part of my story, what calls me to service and to be an advocate for our public schools comes from my experience with Mrs. Schmidt. I can’t imagine being me without her #BeTheLight
