Dozens of UN experts call for targeted sanctions and arms embargo on Israel The UN building in Geneva (AFP) Officials urged UN member states to 'immediately review all diplomatic, political and economic ties with Israel' A group of 38 independent UN human rights experts, appointed by the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva as part of its special procedures, have called on UN member states to impose an arms embargo and targeted sanctions on Israel. In a joint statement on Tuesday, the experts urged UN member states to "immediately review all diplomatic, political, and economic ties with Israel, inclusive of business and finance, pension funds, academia and charities." They called on member states to implement an immediate and complete embargo on the sale of arms, munitions and other military equipment to Israel. The UN experts added that states must impose targeted sanctions on Israel and investigate dual citizens involved in crimes while serving in the Israeli military, or involved in settler violence in the occupied West Bank. The call comes as the UK indicated it is looking into restricting some, but not all, arms sales to Israel, althought it has offered no timetable on the decision. Israeli strike on UN-run school that housed displaced families in Nuseirat kills 23 Palestinians On July 16, an Israeli strike on a United Nations-run school offering housing for displaced families in central Gaza's Nuseirat refugee camp claimed the lives of 23 Palestinians and wounded 73 others. The Israeli strike left the school in al-Razi partially destroyed, and the aftermath of the attack showered debris in the schoolyard and the classrooms used as shelters by displaced Palestinian families. One man collecting body parts from the victims said many civilians were killed, including the lives of several children, whose bodies were "torn up" during the attack, with "nothing left of them." The casualties included Mohammad Meshmesh, a local journalist. According to the government media office in Gaza, this increased the number of journalists killed in the war to 160. The deadly Israeli strike on the school left many people in a state of shock while they watched rescue workers removing several bodies from under the rubble, reported Nuseirat resident Riyad Abu Shanab. The resident added that a quick look around the place offered a chilling view of many "body parts strewn around." He added that he also could have been hurt or died if he hadn't left to go to the toilet to wash his hands when the strike hit. Israeli attacks throughout the Gaza Strip on July 16 have claimed the lives of at least 57 Palestinians, including 17 individuals who were killed in a strike near a tented area offering housing for displaced people in the humanitarian-designated area of al-Mawasi in Khan Younis, located in southern Gaza. The attack on al-Mawasi followed previous air strikes earlier this month that claimed the lives of around 88 people and wounded 289 others in a displaced people's camp in the same area. Since October 2023, the Israel-Palestine war has claimed the lives of more than 38,000 Palestinians. According to data, the majority of the dead are women and children. Israel said it had killed or wounded 14,000 Hamas members and eliminated half of the organization's leadership. Israel also insisted that the al-Mawasi strike was targeting Mohammed Deif, the Hamas military leader. However, the Palestinian group denied that he was affected by the attack. The UNRWA reported that Israeli forces have hit at least 70 percent of its schools in Gaza since the war began in October 2023. Posting on X, formerly Twitter, the UNRWA said more than 95 percent of the schools were being used as shelters when they were attacked. The organization added that at least 539 people sheltering in UNRWA facilities have died during the attacks. "Nowhere is safe. The blatant disregard for UN premises and humanitarian law must stop," said the UNRWA. UN official warns of “inevitable” famine with countries pausing UNRWA funding An official at the United Nations has warned of "inevitable" famine after several countries paused funding for the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). Michael Fakri, the UN special rapporteur on the right to food, issued this warning in a Jan. 28 post on X. He wrote: "Some states decided to defund UNRWA for the alleged actions of a small number of employees. This collectively punishes [more than] 2.2 million Palestinians. Famine was imminent; famine is now inevitable." The decision by the U.S. and several other countries to stop funding the UNRWA followed accusations by Israel that 12 of the group's employees took part in Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel. These same employees also reportedly aided Hamas in the days following the incident. The U.S. announced that it would suspend funding to the agency until the allegations were addressed. The United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Australia, Canada, Italy and Finland followed suit. Norway, Spain and Ireland refused to join them, announcing that they would continue funding the UNRWA. Meanwhile, the agency said on Jan. 26 that it had severed ties with the employees reportedly involved and launched an investigation over the matter. In a statement the following day, Lazzarini lamented the "shocking" actions of the U.S. and other benefactors in response to Tel Aviv's allegations. "These decisions threaten our ongoing humanitarian work across the region, including and especially in the Gaza Strip," he stated. "Many are hungry as the clock is ticking towards a looming famine." Palestinian officials condemned the UNRWA defunding Established in 1949, the UNRWA provides healthcare, education and humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. It is the second-largest employer in Gaza after Hamas with 30,000 employees in all, and 13,000 of its employees are in the strip. One senior Palestinian official denounced the decision by the U.S. and others to suspend the UNRWA funding. "At this particular time and in light of the continuing aggression against the Palestinian people, we need the maximum support for this international organization – not stopping support and assistance to it," remarked Palestinian National Authority Civilian Affairs Minister Hussein al-Sheikh in a post on X. "We call on the countries that announced the cessation of their support for UNRWA to immediately reverse their decision, which entails great political and humanitarian relief risks." Even Hamas, whose violence led to the current conflict in Gaza, accused Israel of a "campaign of incitement" against UN agencies delivering vital supplies to Palestinians. The group, formally the Islamic Resistance Movement, posted on Telegram: "We ask the UN and the international organizations to not cave into the threats and blackmail [by Israel]."
