I KINGS CHAPTER 3 SOLOMON'S MARRIAGE TO PHARAOH'S DAUGHTER Our chapter opens with the very surprising news that Solomon married the daughter of the king of the very nation that had ignominiously enslaved and been forced to release Israel hundreds of years earlier. Rashi (on v 3) notes that the verses in this chapter are not in historical sequence, for Solomon's dream in Giv'on (vv 5ff) took place at the very beginning of his reign, whereas it was not until three years afterwards that he made his marriage alliance with Pharoah. This was directly after the death of Solomon's teacher, Shimi ben Gera (narrated out of sequence at the end of the preceding chapter in order to complete the account of Solomon's settling David's outstanding scores). From the proximity of verse 1 of our present chapter to the last verses of the previous chapter, our rabbis taught that as long as his teacher was alive, Solomon did not make this questionable move of intermarriage, deducing that a person should always live close to his teacher in order to stay on the right track (Rashi on v 1). Solomon's move was questionable because the Torah states that "you shall not intermarry with them [i.e. the other nations]" (Deut. 7:3). Some rabbis held that intermarriage would only be forbidden if the non-Israelite party to the marriage does not convert, but others held that converting them in order to marry is also forbidden. Another factor raising questions about Solomon's move is the tradition that no converts were accepted in the times of David and Solomon because the prestige of Israel was so great that potential converts would all have had ulterior motives. However the Talmud explicitly states that this did not apply to the daughter of Pharaoh, who had enough wealth not to need to marry Solomon for money (Talmud Yevamos 76a). A further question is how Solomon could have converted and then married an Egyptian woman when the Torah states that an Egyptian convert may not enter the Assembly until the third generation (Deut. 23:9). However, this objection is countered by a tradition (not accepted halachically) that the referenced verse applies only to an Egyptian male but not to a female (which would make the law of the Egyptian parallel to the law forbidding a Moabite but not a Moabitess from ever entering the Assembly. Despite the many questions that surround it, we do not find Solomon's marriage to Pharaoh's daughter criticized in our text as being intrinsically sinful: verse 3 DOES implicitly criticize Solomon for sacrificing at many high altars but does NOT criticize him for marrying Pharaoh's daughter. It was only in his old age, when Solomon took many wives, that he was criticized for allowing them to turn his heart aside from God. It stands to reason that the exact intent of the supremely wise Solomon in marrying the daughter of Israel's former persecutors would be beyond the ability of simple people like ourselves to grasp. Since PHARAOH represents the OREPH ("back of the neck", same Hebrew letters as Pharaoh) of creation as opposed to its inner face, the conversion of his daughter by Solomon and her integration into the holy edifice that he was building was a "coup" comparable with the conversion of Batya, the daughter of Pharaoh who drew Moses out of the water. The "daughter of Pharaoh" represents the source of all the different kinds of worldly wisdom (which are her "handmaidens"). By "converting" and "marrying" Pharaoh's daughter, Solomon was perhaps very daringly and ambitiously striving to deepen and enhance the revelation of God's unity on all levels of creation. If so, it was apparently still over-ambitious, because Solomon proved unable to hold his "catch" within the bounds of holiness, and indeed he himself strayed beyond them. In retribution, said the rabbis, at the very moment when Solomon married Pharaoh's daughter, the angel Gabriel (GEVURAH, "might", withholding and concealing) descended and drove the first stake into the sea in the very place where more and more sediment eventually collected to form the foundation of what was to become Israel's nemesis: the city of Rome (Talmud Shabbos 56b). "AND SOLOMON LOVED GOD" (v 3) Prior to his heart-enticing marriages with foreign women, Solomon passionately followed the Torah of his father David. If he was criticized, it was only for "sacrificing in the high places". This was actually permitted as long as the Temple was not built in Jerusalem. Since the sacking of the Sanctuary of Shilo by the Philistines in the time of Ely and the slaughter of the priests of Nov by Saul, the Sanctuary with the vessels of Moses had been in Giv'on, except for the Ark of the Covenant, which David had taken to Jerusalem. Whereas David had sacrificed only at the "great" Altar in Giv'on (this was the copper Altar made by Moses) or at an altar that he erected before the Ark in Jerusalem, Solomon also sacrificed in other high places (until the building of the Temple), and while this was still permitted, it was seen as a deviation from David's path and as needlessly delaying the building of the Temple in Jerusalem (Rashi and RaDaK on v 3). THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON Whereas David's kingship was founded on the sword of prayer and faith – he had to fight throughout his life – Solomon's kingship was founded on the very WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING which he had the good sense to request when God offered him anything he wanted. At the tender age of 12 (Rashi and RaDaK on v 7) when many intelligent youngsters tend to be highly arrogant, the wise young King Solomon had the humility to understand he would need divine help in judging the busy, quarrelsome Israelites – for kingship (MALCHUS) is founded on Judgment (MISHPAT=TIFERES, the center column, balance) and the repair of Judgment depends upon BINAH, "understanding". Solomon thus asked God to "give Your servant a LISTENING heart" (v 9) in order to HEAR and UNDERSTAND, while God responded even more generously by giving him a heart that was WISE as well as UNDERSTANDING (v 12). CHOKHMAH, "wisdom", is the ability to GRASP, know and remember what one learns, while BINAH, "understanding", is the ability to ANALYZE what one knows in order to make new inferences, "understanding one thing from another" (RaDaK on v 12). When Solomon awoke from his dream he knew that his request had been granted, because "he heard a bird chirping and understood its language, and he heard a dog barking and he understood what it was saying" (Rashi on v 15). COT DEATH: WHOSE IS THE LIVING CHILD? Solomon's first dramatic demonstration of his divinely-granted powers of judgment came with the arrival of the two "whores" who were quarreling about which of their two babies died and to whom the surviving child belonged. The Talmudic teacher Rav held that these two "whores" were actually spirits. Rabbi Simon in the name of R. Yehoshua ben Levi said they were literally prostitutes. A third opinion, offered by unnamed sages, is that they were actually a mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law (Shir HaShirim Rabbah 1:10). This third opinion immeasurably sharpens the dispute between them on the assumption that the aggrieved mother who started pleading before the king saying that she had been the first to give birth (vv 17-18) was the mother-in-law. If the second woman – her daughter-in-law, who gave birth three days later – lost her husband AFTER the birth of her mother-in-law's baby and subsequently lost her own baby (an only child), it would mean that according to the law of the levirate marriage she would have to marry her mother-in-law's baby, the brother of her dead husband, her YAVAM, since with the death of her own baby her dead husband left no living issue. In any event she would have to wait thirteen years until her mother-in-law's baby became a legal adult in order to either carry out the mitzvah of YIBUM by marrying his dead brother's widow or release her from their bond through HALITZAH, "removal of the brother-in-law's sandal" (see Deut. 25:5ff). Having to wait for thirteen years as a stranded AGUNAH before she could regularize her status would give the daughter-in-law a very strong incentive to take her mother-in-law's baby as her own, because if she could make it appear that her dead husband did have surviving issue this would release her from the bond of YIBUM with any of his brothers. Likewise, it would not bother her in the least if the king sliced the living child in half, because if he was indeed the sole surviving brother of her dead husband, his death would automatically release her from any bond of YIBUM in the absence of any YAVAM, leaving her free to marry anyone she wanted. Before Solomon delivered his judgment, he first made sure to repeat the claims of each woman in his own words (v 23) to make it clear that he had understood exactly what they were saying. In this he provided a model for every good DAYAN ("judge"), who must review the claims made by the rival claimants before delivering judgment. Solomon's brilliant bluff ordering a sword to be brought immediately elicited the natural motherly compassion of the true mother and exposed the lying baby-thief for what she was. "And all Israel heard the judgment that the king decided and they were in awe before the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to do judgment" (v 28). * * * The passage in I Kings 3:15-28 and 4:1 is read as the Haftara of Parshas Miketz, Genesis 41:1-44:17 unless this parshah is read on Shabbos Chanukah * * * CHAPTER 4 "AND SOLOMON WAS KING OVER ALL ISRAEL" (v 1) David had been king over Judah in Hebron before he was accepted as king over all Israel. It is a tribute to David's lifelong struggle that the entire nation was now able to unite in accepting one king. They did so because they saw Solomon's divinely-bestowed wisdom and everyone rejoiced in his kingship (Rashi on v 1). Listed first and foremost among Solomon's officers is the Priest – because the entire national agenda was now focused on building a functioning Temple. Solomon had scribes to write down his governmental decisions and dispatch them for execution; he had a MAZKIR (lit. "one who makes you remember") i.e. a "secretary" to make records of events and archive them. Like Saul and David, Solomon had his commander-in-chief. Listed among his officers is also "the king's friend" – presumably one who was likewise very wise indeed and with whom Solomon doubtless loved to fathom the depths of wisdom. THE TWELVE PROVIDING OFFICERS Solomon's kingship is portrayed as a model of good order, in which twelve NETZIVIM, "appointed officers", were in charge of collecting all the provisions, materials and other needs of the royal household and army from twelve regions into which the Land of Israel was divided. These regions did NOT correspond to the territorial portions of the Twelve Tribes, which were uneven both in area and in the kind of land they comprised. Rather, these twelve regions represented a fair division of the entire land into portions each one of which could sustain the royal household for one of the twelve months of the year (Radak on v 8). The twelve months of the year correspond to the twelve possible permutations of the holy "essential" name of God, "HaVaYaH" (YKVK). These are discussed at length in SEFER YETZIRA, the earliest kabbalistic text, attributed to our father Abraham. This was certainly known to Solomon (whose Proverbs contain certain allusions to the wisdom of Sefer Yetzirah). Just as the "sun" of the Name of HaVaYaH (=Zeir Anpin) shines month by month with different permutations to the "moon" of MALCHUS, "kingship" (=Nukva), so King Solomon (MALCHUS, the receiving vessel of Zeir Anpin=Chochmah) received his PARNASSAH ("livelihood") from TWELVE different regions of Eretz Israel, which itself corresponds to the Partzuf of Malchus. "Judah and Israel multiplied like the sand of the sea in multitude, eating and drinking and rejoicing" (v 20). "In the time of Solomon they were blessed with the fruit of the womb and they multiplied, as did the fruits of their animals and their land, and they ate and drank and rejoiced, for they had no fear of any enemy" (RaDaK on v 20). May a new golden age even greater than that of Solomon speedily be inaugurated by the building of the Holy Temple that we now await!

Born in the heat of war, dead from the cold: Gaza’s children are freezing to death Alison Weir December 31, 2024 child starvation, Gaza, war on children Gaza City, Nov 10, 2024 Left without power or shelter, Palestinians are struggling to keep their children warm – at least five have frozen to death in the last two weeks By Maha Hussaini in Gaza, occupied Palestine and Mohammed al-Hajjar, reposted from Middle East Eye, Dec. 30, 2024 A dewdrop fell from the roof of a tent on to Yahya Muhammed al-Batran’s nose, waking him to the news that his newborn son, one half of a pair of twin brothers, had frozen to death overnight on Sunday. Originally from Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip, Batran’s wife had given birth a month earlier. The children’s first home was a makeshift tent for the displaced, patched over with blankets, in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza. The rudimentary protection from the winter cold and the lack of appropriate clothing meant the boys were at risk from the outset. Recalling the discovery that his child had died, Batran said: “My wife was awake. I asked her what was wrong, and she pointed to Jumaa and shook her head. “She said: ‘Ali seems half alive. But Jumaa, I’ve been trying to wake him for a while, and he won’t wake up.’ “She said that his head felt like ice. He was pale and completely lifeless.” Batran wrapped his son in a blanket and rushed him to al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah. “When I got there, the doctor said: ‘May God grant you patience; he’s dead.” Batran’s remaining twin son remains in critical condition, as he also suffers from the effects of hyperthermia. Israel has destroyed a vast majority of buildings in Gaza and has cut off fuel and electricity supplies to its residents. More than 2.3 million Palestinians are huddled together in an increasingly small territory as Israel ethnically cleanses the northern half of the strip. The Batran family’s experience reflects that of hundreds of thousands of others, forced from temporary home to temporary home as Israel carries out its campaign of killing and destruction. In their case, there has been no respite from death. “We came to central Gaza to protect ourselves and our children from the death we saw back in northern Gaza,” Batran told Middle East Eye. “We were staying at a school in al-Maghazi, but after it was bombed, we fled to Deir al-Balah and stayed in a tent,” he added. “Two of my nephews and three of my in-laws were martyred a few weeks ago. A week after my brothers’ sons were killed, God blessed me with twin boys. “I named one after his uncle who was previously martyred, Jumaa, and the other after my nephew who was martyred recently, Ali.” Jumaa and Ali were born prematurely at eight months but were in stable condition at the time. Jumaa’s death takes the total number of children who have frozen to death in Gaza in the last fortnight to at least five. They include Aisha al-Qassas, who was 21 days old; Ali Essam Saqr, who was 23 days old; Ali Hussam Azzam, who was four days old; Sila Mahmoud al-Fassih, who was 14 days old; and Jumaa al-Batran, who was one month old. A sixth adult victim, a nurse named Ahmed al-Zaharna, was also found dead in his tent in Mawasi, Khan Younis, due to hypothermia. Lack of postnatal care As of September, more than 525,000 Palestinian women in Gaza have lost access to critical services, including prenatal and postnatal care, family planning and infection treatment, according to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Of these, over 17,000 pregnant women are facing starvation, with almost 11,000 already suffering from severe food shortages as man-made famine threatens the most vulnerable. “This lack of proper nutrition – combined with the immense stress of their situation – is leading to a rise in preterm births, low-birth-weight babies, and increased risks of stillbirths and developmental delays,” the UNFPA stated on its website. Due to the limited capacity of hospitals and the overwhelming number of cases, the Batran twins were discharged from their incubator early, and their family was forced to take them back to their makeshift tent. “I had no money to buy them clothes or blankets. Some neighbours donated a few clothes, but the twins needed something like a hospital incubator with nylon [for insulation] to keep them warm,” their father said. “I couldn’t even afford to buy 4m of nylon. I swear to God, I would cover them with my only blanket and spend the entire night freezing,” he added. “I went to Unrwa [the UN agency for Palestinian refugees], and they gave me a device that could be charged to keep the babies warm. But it could only work for three hours before needing to be recharged. I would use it for an hour and a half for each infant.” To recharge the device, Batran would go to the hospital twice a day and use the electricity provided by its power generators. But on the night Jumaa froze to death, the device had already lost charge from earlier use. ‘Verge of madness’ Since the start of its war on Gaza in October 2023, Israel has cut off electricity, severely restricted the entry of fuel and bombed much of the electricity infrastructure in the blockaded enclave. As a result, Gaza’s residents are enduring a complete energy blackout that has lasted 14 months. While solar power has helped some Palestinians generate energy, it has not been enough to meet their needs. Dr Hani al-Faleet, a paediatric specialist at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, said there have been cases where children were close to death but managed to survive. “The situation is deeply sad because it could have been prevented if there was proper heating, clothing, and nutrition available,” Faleet said. “Extreme cold significantly impacts the body’s organ functions, disrupting the heart and circulatory system,” he added. As cases of hypothermia increase and temperatures continue to drop in Gaza, parents have become increasingly paranoid about the risk of their children becoming the next victims of the cold. In a post on the social media platform X, Nour, a Palestinian displaced mother in the central Gaza Strip, wrote: “I cannot sleep. In the suffocating darkness, I feel their breaths beneath their noses to ensure they haven’t frozen to death yet. I cannot sleep. I’m on the verge of madness” In al-Zawaida in central Gaza, Hamed Ahmed, a father of three, pricks his newborn’s feet with a pin as she sleeps to ensure she still feels it. “My tent is made of bits of nylon and fabric, set up near the sea. At night, the temperature drops so much that we adults shiver and freeze – imagine the children,” he told MEE. “Normally, at the start of winter, we would shop for new clothes for the kids. But now, with three children, my wife and myself, we would need a massive budget to buy clothes. “Today, a single pair of pyjamas costs 150-180 shekels ($40-50), and I’m unemployed now, so I didn’t buy them anything.” For more than a year, Israel has severely restricted the entry of goods into Gaza, including winter clothes, with only limited supplies entering as part of international aid. As a result, the central and southern Gaza Strip, currently home to around 2 million residents and displaced people, is facing a shortage of winter clothes and blankets. If some items are brought by traders from northern Gaza, they are sold at more than triple their pre-war prices. “After hearing about the children who have died from the cold, we cannot sleep at night as we keep checking to see if they are covered and warm. “My wife and I take turns to stay awake to make sure our 22-day-old daughter is still alive. “We feel her feet regularly to see if they are cold or warm.” Maha Hussaini is an award-winning journalist and human rights activist based in Gaza. Yemen foils US-Israeli led intelligence activities From Al Mayadeen. Yesterday, Wednesday 25th December 2024, Yemen News Agency Saba and Al Mayadeen reported that the Yemeni security services foiled intelligence activities led by the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Israeli Intelligence Service (Mossad). A statement issued by the Yemeni security forces said: The enemy's intelligence seeks, through espionage activities, to hinder the Yemeni people's stance in support of Gaza by targeting its military forces and leadership. …and warned that CIA an Mossad collaborators may even face death sentence. It is not the first time that Yemeni security services perform such an operation: in June this year (2024), they uncovered and captured a large US-Israeli espionage cell operated by CIA and Mossad within the US embassy, labelled as “a den of espionage and a tool for sabotage”, as I reported in this article. In my opinion the US embassy in Sanaa should be closed, as the one in Tehran was closed following the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979. Over the last few days, the Yemeni security forces arrested several collaborators and spies, whose intelligence missions included “tracking and gathering information on experts, laboratories, platforms, and vehicles used for launching missiles and drones […] as well as monitoring locations and positions of naval forces, camps, and weapons depots belonging to the armed forces”. The recruiter, Hamid Hussein Fayed Mujalli, is still fugitive and wanted… but hopefully he will be found and arrested soon, so that he can face justice. The spies and collaborators even tried “to locate and gather information on the whereabouts of the leader of the Yemeni Ansar Allah movement, Sayyed Abdul-Malik al-Houthi”, thus suggesting that Little Satan (a.k.a. Israel) and Great Satan (a.k.a. the Outlaw US Empire) are planning to launch decapitation strikes against Ansar Allah in Yemen as they did with Hezbollah in Lebanon (first with Fuad Shukr and then with Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah) and Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar (in Gaza) and Ismail Haniyeh (in Iran), whose targeted assassination - by the way - was finally admitted by Israel Katz, Israeli Minister of “Defense”, a couple of days ago, as reported by IRNA (Islamic Republic News Agency of Iran), which quoted him as saying (emphasis mine): We will strike hard at the H[o]uthis... and decapitate their leadership -- just as we did with Haniyeh, (Yahya) Sinwar, and (Hassan) Nasrallah in Tehran, Gaza, and Lebanon, we will do so in Hodeida and Sanaa. If they really wanted to stop drone and missile attacks on their territory from Yemen, they could easily achieve this objective simply by ending the aggression on Gaza and lifting the siege, as requested by Ansar Allah in all its statements. However, I doubt they will ever do it, especially after they managed to reach a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah, whose leaders were saying that they would stop their attacks against Israel only if the latter halted its military operations in Gaza… yet they are still ongoing and the Zionists are even taking advantage of the ceasefire with Hezbollah to infiltrate Wadi al-Hujayr in southern Lebanon, “a region that has been inaccessible to them during the war due to the Lebanese Resistance”, as per Al Mayadeen. But there are two things that people in my circle are really concerned about. One is how genuine al-Sharaa is, and the other is how much control he really has over the more radical people in his group. Syrians in general, including the conservative ones, are not inclined to extremism. If al-Jolani keeps his promises and controls his men, then Syrians will support him. But if extremists dominate, Syrians will rise against them just as they rose against Bashar al-Assad. VOA also quoted, an expert on Islamist groups in Syria, Aymenn Jawad al-Tamimi, as saying that one of the main tensions is “between the HTS leadership under al-Jolani and the action of individual members who for years were fed propaganda” and that… They may collectively impute guilt to Alawites and others like Christians and engage in attacks and insults. The VOA articles then cites two other analysts who give a more optimistic view, suggesting that HTS and the caretaker government will sideline or even arrest extremist factions, but without providing any concrete sign in support of such a positive opinion. Instead, the situation seems to get worse on the ground, as reported in another Al Mayadeen article, which describes chaos and lack of security in Masyaf, northwest of Hama, where three civilian land registry judges from the Alawite sect were killed two days ago, and in Aleppo, where an undated video was geolocated showing armed men storming the religious shrine of Abu Abdullah al-Hussein al-Khasibi, the founder of the Alawite sect, resulting “in the killing of five attendants, the mutilation of their bodies, the vandalization of the shrine, and its burning”. Regardless of its date, the video went viral online and caused “public discontent among the residents in the area” yesterday, as reported also by IRNA, which mentions thousands of people demonstrating in Latakia, Tartus, Homs and Hama (see also the video below). And this morning Al Mayadeen reported clashes during an attempt by security forces to arrest an officer, who had served under Bashar al-Assad, in Tartus province yesterday, resulting in 17 people killed, 14 of which members of the General Security force and 3 armed men, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which identified the wanted person as Mohammed Kanjo Hassan, “an officer in the former regime forces who held the position of director of the military justice department and field court chief [and] issued death sentences and arbitrary judgements against thousands of prisoners”. Apparently the clashes broke out after “a number of residents refused to allow their houses to be searched”. From The Times of Israel. Finally, a nuclear bombshell (literally!): the Israeli airstrike on the weapons depot in Tartus on 16th December 2024 may have been carried out with a small nuclear bomb, such as an American B61, as speculated by some reports mentioned in India.com, considering spikes in radiation measured by the European Union’s Radioactive Environmental Monitoring in Cyprus and Turkey ~20 hours after the blast, which also caused an earthquake of magnitude 3 that was felt even in Iznik (Turkey), ~820 km away from Tartus. That was before the murderous blitzkrieg they called Operation Cast Lead and subsequent massacres, but Israel’s crimes against humanity were already piled high. When I got home memories of the visit so haunted me that I sat down and wrote an article titled “See Gaza and Weep” describing my impressions in November of 2007. flattening Gaza to the ground SEE GAZA AND WEEP Traffic into Gaza through the smart new border ‘facility’ at Erez is down to a trickle since Israel branded this tiny Palestinian seaside enclave a “hostile entity” and imposed a blockade even harsher than before. We came to Gaza to visit Fr Manuel Musallam, who ministers to his flock, runs the excellent Catholic school against all odds and is revered as a local hero. If he leaves Gaza the Israelis won’t allow him back, so for 9 years he has stayed put, isolated. When he heard we were coming, said a colleague, he burst into tears. After a noisy arrival at breakneck speed, with police sirens blaring Palestinian-style, our visit quickly turned into a media circus. An unlikely cavalcade of priests, interpreters, teachers, cameramen and Hamas armed police then took off to inspect the Rafah crossing into Egypt, now closed indefinitely, then followed the iron barrier down to the sea and the coast road back to the city. I noted the deserted beaches and disused fishing boats… Israel has banned fishing off the Gaza coast, ruined the livelihood of 3000 fishermen and deprived local people of a proper diet. Boats defying the ban are fired on. The Gaza Strip is sealed off from the outside world with an Israeli fence guarded by watchtowers, snipers, tanks, armoured bulldozers and drones. Israel pretended to withdraw two years ago but still controls Gaza’s airspace, coastal waters and airwaves. It has the place bottled up like a prison and makes frequent incursions. Much of it is blasted to rubble but many fine buildings survive. So does the defiant community. One can easily imagine Gaza blossoming into a coastal paradise, but right now the strangulated economy is in free-fall and for 1.5 million ordinary folk life is hell. Unemployment stands at 65%, and 80% live below the poverty line. Fuel is running out, so are basics like washing powder. Shattered infrastructure and food shortages mean serious public health problems. Power cuts disrupt hospitals and vital drugs cannot be kept refrigerated. Thousands look death in the face as medi-care collapses. A friend emailed: “Today in Gaza we have no cement to build graves for those who die.” Palestinians pray by the bodies of people killed in the Gaza Strip in front of the morgue in Deir al-Balah. [Adel Hana/AP Photo] We were also there to show solidarity with the whole population, Muslim and Christian, against the crippling economic sanctions that have led to this crisis. According to the Ministry of Health 450 cancer patients (35% of them children) are forbidden to leave Gaza for treatment or surgery. Many go without medication because cancer drugs are blocked or delayed at the border. There’s no radiotherapy. 400 renal failure patients should be getting dialysis three times a week but 20 of the 69 machines are out of action – no spares – and treatment has been cut to twice a week. 400 cardiac patients suffer unnecessarily owing to shortage of drugs. Spares for therapeutic and diagnostic equipment cannot get through. Hospitals are completely out of many essential medical and psychiatric drugs, X-ray bags and sterilisation bags. They are dangerously short of dressings, other disposables and cleaning materials. When the 2 weeks’ supply of anaesthetics is finished the operating theatres will close. Fuel stocks may last 15 days with luck, but there’s no patient food until MAP UK aid arrives. Physicians for Human Rights (Israel) say they have been trying to bring the critically ill out of Gaza for proper treatment, but are often refused. So they die in agony. A thousand patients – advanced kidney and cancer cases and victims of Israeli air-strikes – need immediate transfer. Channel 4 News screened a shocking report on UK TV about how the sick are blackmailed. If they agree to inform on relatives they are allowed to cross the border. If not they can “stay in Gaza and die”. The Red Cross repeatedly reminds Israel of its obligation under international law and the Geneva Conventions to ensure that humanitarian supplies reach Palestinian civilians. However, I’m told that drugs purchased from sales of my book ‘Radio Free Palestine’ cannot be delivered in the normal way and will have to be smuggled in somehow. The European Parliament in October passed a resolution calling on Israel to lift the blockade and guarantee humanitarian aid and essential supplies of electricity and fuel. Israel responded by declaring Gaza a “hostile entity” and announced more sanctions. As guests in the community we were invited for coffee at the House of Fatah and the residence of Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniyeh. It was a relief to see that relations between religious and political factions are friendly and good-humoured at such a difficult time. Taking our leave was double torture… the wrench of saying farewell to a brave people that Western governments are persecuting, and the prospect of once again running the gauntlet of Erez’s high-tech security procedures and questioning, which this time took 3 hours while Qassam rockets flew over and exploded on the Israeli side. They seldom do any damage but indiscriminate targeting of civilians by both sides is deplorable. Gaza was formerly under British mandate, which is surely reason enough to feel a special responsibility. In better days a kindlier British government might have landed supplies on Gaza’s empty beach and lifted the siege. Indeed, there are many things a kindlier British government might have done to set the Palestinians free. How different now. The appalling situation, created with Britain’s help, is designed to force democratically elected Hamas into submission and bring a sick and demoralised community meekly back under Abbas’s puppet regime. Meanwhile the subjugation and dispossession of Christians and Muslims in the Holy Land continues. It remains a mystery to me why our largely Christian (but increasingly Muslim-inclusive) democracy in the UK so slavishly supports the Middle Eastern ethnocracy that’s doing this… Question: What has changed for the better? Answer: Nothing. And that sums up the achievement of Mahmoud Abbas’s over-long stay as Palestinian president. Some say Abbas isn’t a bad guy, he just lost his way. Actually there’s a long crime-sheet against him. A founding member of Arafat’s Fatah faction, he ‘won’ the presidency of the Palestinian National Authority in January 2005 in a dodgy contest – let’s not dignify it with the word ‘election’ – in which Israel seriously interfered to obstruct other candidates. He has overstayed his 4-year term by nearly 3 years and is widely regarded as having no legitimacy and no popular mandate. Legitimate or not, he is still propped up by the US, Israel, Britain and those other beacons of democracy. According to the Constitution the presidency should by now have devolved to the Speaker of the Legislative Council, Aziz Duweik. But that could never be permitted because Duweik, although a professor with a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, is also a member of Hamas. So Abbas clings to office like used chewing-gum to the sidewalk. In 2007 he dissolved the Hamas-led unity government, of which Haniyeh was prime minister, and appointed Salam Fayyad in his place, a move that was almost certainly illegal under Palestinian Basic Law and designed to ensure the disunity and weakness that Israel so badly wanted to see. Since the Palestinian Legislative Council never approved Fayyad’s appointment, many Palestinians regard Haniyeh as the caretaker PM although his authority, as a result of Abbas’s treachery, is now confined to Gaza. In all probability Fayyad has no more legitimacy than Abbas. When he took up the post of president, Abbas would have sworn this solemn oath… “I swear to God almighty to be faithful to the Homeland and to its sacred places, and to the people and its national heritage, and to respect the Constitutional system and the law, and to safeguard the interests of the Palestinian people completely, as God is my witness.” We’ve seen how he respects his country’s Constitutional system. He was further undone by the Wikileaks suggestions that the Israeli government “consulted with Egypt and Fatah prior to Operation Cast Lead, asking if they were willing to assume control of Gaza once Israel defeated Hamas”. And only a few days ago Abbas was safeguarding the interests of the Palestinian people by announcing on Israeli TV, of all places: “Palestine now for me is ’67 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. This is now and forever … This is Palestine for me. I am [a] refugee, but I am living in Ramallah. I believe that [the] West Bank and Gaza is Palestine and the other parts [are] Israel.” In other words, he relinquishes the Palestinian refugees’ right to return to their lands and homes and even surrenders his own right to return to his birth town Safad, which is now a district in northern Israel. “We don’t want to use terror,” he says. Agreed. Perish the thought. “We don’t want to use force. We don’t want to use weapons…” he says. But Palestinians have a perfect legal right to use any means to repel a foreign occupier. “We want to use diplomacy. We want to use politics. We want to use negotiations…” Has he learned nothing from 64 years of non-stop ethnic cleansing and failed diplomacy? The Israelis by all accounts are jubilant. Their Top Stooge has scored for them again. But Haniyeh is not amused. “It is not possible for any person, regardless of who he is … to give up a hand’s width of this Palestinian land, or to give up the right of return to our homes from which we were forced out…” If you visit the Holy Land, Palestinians will urge you to tell their story when you get home. But does Abbas bother to tell it? How many activists, supporters, sympathizers, journalists and writers have had a chance to meet this great leader of the Palestinian underdogs… to be enthused by him… to question him? When he comes to London for “talks” it’s hush-hush. We never hear about it. His good-for-nothing embassy says nothing. His worse-than-useless press office in Ramallah says nothing. In the struggle for their rights and independence the Palestinians have international law and UN resolutions on their side. But in the seven years Abbas has presided the West Bank has remained sealed, the theft of Palestinian land has continued unabated and the blockade on Gaza has not eased – it’s been tightened. Palestine goes on losing more than it gains. The bottom line is that in the 21st Century – this new age of enlightenment – Palestinians remain prisoners in their own country. How miserably must a leader fail his people before they kick him out? And how much longer will Western leaders continue to shirk their responsibilities towards our Christians and Muslims brothers and sisters in the Holy Land? Fast-forward 12 years and today the loser Abbas is still there, widely regarded as a quisling and achieving nothing for his own country… but still doing Israel many favours. Who, in 2007, could have believed that for 14 months in 2023/4 the international community would stand by and do nothing to stop the apartheid regime in Israel exterminating Palestinian civilians, women and children in their own homeland in revenge for their having struck back against over 7 decades of Israeli illegal and brutal military occupation, dispossession, theft of their lands, livelihoods and resources, and interference with their lives at every level? Who, in 2007, would have believed that the US and UK — those champions of democracy, freedom and self-determination — would be supplying Israel with the munitions and other wherewithall to carry out a full-blooded genocide? Who, in 2007, would have believed that the people of the US and UK could allow their sick-minded politicans to behave in such a despicable way? And who, in 2007, would have thought Western Christendom would be so spineless as to stand idly by watching their Christian and Muslim brothers and sisters being cruelly slaughtered in Gaza and the West Bank — the very wellspring of their faith — and not even raise a whimper never mind mobilise their millions in opposition to such downright evil. Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me. (Job 19: 25-27) There aren't many people who aren't acquainted with Job's story. Indeed, it's similar to Heb.11, the faith chapter in the New Testament. Reading from verse one, we are presented with a grief stricken Job, whose soul was bitterly anguished at the words of his so-called comforters. *You have already reviled me ten times,* he says. When in trouble, especially when we formerly occupied an enviable position, you are bound to witness or experience those who professed love and their commitments to the blooming of your friendship, suddenly turn and become your judges and arbitrators. The hard-hearted among them,may oftentimes turn out to be the ones to easily hurl reproaches at you in the day of your misfortune. IS GOD EVIL,FOR ALLOWING US TO EXPERIENCE*THE FIERY DARTS OF THE ENEMY? 🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥 Of course,NO! Job's afflictions was the work of the devil , and it was completely permitted by God, as was the crucifixion of Christ Jesus. Permitted by God means that *If God has said,No, there's nothing the devil can do about it,that is,if God doesn't permit the enemy,you can't be touched. This is because the aggressor will have to fight God first. So ,every evil under the sun is essentially the work of *wicked hands.* God allows them. HE uses them to direct our gaze on HIM,and to curb our excesses. God desires us to be solely dependent on Him alone...we did this sometime ago,on *GOD BEING A JEALOUS GOD* He brooks no opposition from anyone. It is quite interesting to note that, it was after Job had experienced the weakness and deception of all earthly relations, that the vision of the Kinsman-Redeemer came to his desolate spirit. Yes,Job realise that despite having thousands of friends and praise singers,he was alone at that moment,and understood that only God can get him out of this. Truly we have here the work of the Spirit of God . The unsatisfactory nature of all earthly friendships, and their inadequacy and inability to meet the needs of a sinful and downcast soul, must be fully seen before the glories of Kinsman Redeemer, can be fully appreciated. God Loves us more,when we earnestly declare ,not only with our lips,but moreso our hearts,that without Him,we can't save ourselves. Trust me, whenever we get to this point in genuinty and sincerity, and not lip service or halfly measures,God is bound by His Word to intervene; 14. Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts? 15. And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered. 16. Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. 17. And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. 18. Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not. (Mal 3: 14-18) I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. (Psa 138: 2) This was another of King David's key in ensuring God's protection and provision at all times,*who is man that you are mindful of him?* As Christians,we should have heard this... Even though saint Job knew this,as with frail humans,he couldn't go the whole way,and insisted on his righteousness... however,to his credit,we thank God that he realised quickly that Man's righteousness is simply a filthy rag before our ever perfect God...amen! JUST A MINUTE PLEASE [FROM THE PREACHER'S CORNER] 🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥 THE GREAT DECEPTION: REJECTING THE WORLD AS CHRIST JESUS DID🤔! 🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥🚥 FROM THE ARCHIVES! 8. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9. And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. (Mat 4: 8-10) Tonight,by His grace and mercy, and as burdened, I am treading again on*sensitive* grounds. * I HONESTLY PRAY FOR US,THAT BY THE TIME WE ARE THROUGH, WE WILL ONLY SEE THE MESSAGE,AND IGNORE THE MESSENGER* 🙇🙏 That the devil once lived in Heaven isn't news anymore...he still has relative access even today, according to Job chapter one. He was there, but,not just there,he occupied an exalted position as the covering cherub,until iniquity was found in him,and subsequently banished eternally. Having foolishly lost his glorious home,he worsened his already hopeless condition by taking up arms against his CREATOR,but knowing he of course,stands no chance of victory,he resorted to tap into *GOD'S EMOTIONS,HIS LOVE FOR MAN* Thus,man became a tool in Satan's hand to scuttle God's design for HIS MASTERPIECE (MAN). It's worthwhile for me to stress a *Core Truth* here. And that is,this world we live in today was perfectly designed by God for Man's habitation. But satan,in his fury decided to use it against God, and Man who was in charge fell to him and handed it over to him... don't blame Adam,you and I wouldn't have fared any better. *BUT HEREIN LIES THE DECEPTION...GOD EFFECTIVELY REJECTED THIS PRESENT WORLD AND EFFICIENTLY MADE PROVISIONS FOR ANOTHER SIN UNTAINTED EARTH...BUT THE DEVIL DOESN'T WANT YOU AND ME TO BELIEVE GOD!* The only weapon Satan has against God is *Man*...a kind of emotional blackmail,if you can think deeply enough, for he knows GOD LOVES MAN SO MUCH (JN.3:16, 15:13). Perhaps, it's also worthwhile to know,that this isn't the first earth God made. There's probably millions of years gap between Gen.1 :1 and 2. That first earth was judged by God and destroyed...that was why it was without form and void(and darkness is a by product of God's judgement). Therefore,when God decided to recreate or refashion, rebuild another earth, HE purposed it to be in every way different from the former that disappointed HIM. Only HE truly knows the occupants of the former one,but to tell us how concerned HE was with this brand new one we are currently living...HE among other things did something significantly different... something that wasn't in the previous; And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (Gen 1: 26) This time around,God reproduce HIMSELF in Man to Lord it over every other living thing...in much the same way HE does in Heaven...God gave Man absolutely authority over the earth,you see,*THAT WAS (IS) HOW IMPORTANT MAN IS(WAS) TO GOD, until Man gave the devil a foothold in his life...a card he's still using man to play today. But this case was different, apparently,even satan himself didn't even know PROFOUNDLY DEEP, GOD'S LOVE FOR MAN IS (WAS)! God didn't want to do away with this*HIS SPECIAL MASTERPIECE* and resolved to redeem him...but not in THIS WORLD...God resolved to use THIS WORLD as a testing ground for Man, if we can voluntarily and unconditionally love HIM back the same way HE loves (even just a little percentage will be okay for HIM). And those who are prepared and able to sail through, are the ONES HE PREPARED THE ETERNAL NEW EARTH FOR. Those who are ready to make the devil understand,just like Job,that God didn't programme nor is HE forcing us to love HIM,either because of HIS provision or protection...that HE gave us the right to choose, and we chose HIM of our own volition...THIS IS WHAT FATHER WANTS FROM US! But the devil is working terribly hard to convince Man that, there's no other earth,Heaven or hell,aside from what we're seeing now. That we can choose to make this world our Heaven or our hell...all we need is money and more money, and this world will be a paradise . TODAY, THERE ISN'T ANYONE WHO ISN'T PRIVY OR BLIND TO THE SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS AND BREAKTHROUGHS IN EVERY FACET OF LIFE...HOUSES AND CARS , ELECTRONIC GADGETS,ETC... THINGS THAT BEFORE NOW WERE IMPOSSIBLE. 👇 THINGS THAT SADLY MADE MANY GENUINELY MANDATED SERVANTS OF GOD(CUSTODIANS OF GOD'S UNDILUTED WORD) TO BECOME VOLUNTARILY BLIND AND DEAF TO GOD'S WARNINGS (BETTING ON GRACE)!😰 Satan is spending time and resources in so beautifying this broken world that you want to figure if there can be any Heaven better than this. New marvels continue to spring up every second... countries like Dubai, UAE would make a feeble minded Christian wonder if there's a need for another Heaven. Brethren, I stand here to confirm to you and me ,that God has rejected this world...HE no longer had a stake in it the moment Satan lured Man to scruple the original design... HIS only Plan is getting you and me out of it...for a better one. God has left this one for Satan to expend his entire capabilities and capacity,after which HE will permanently deal with him for ever daring HIM! But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up...... (2Pe 3: 10-12) Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. (2Pe 3: 13) But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. (1Co 2: 9) Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men! (Psa 31: 19) God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
