While we are on topic of surviving in harsh enviroments. Meet the Tardigrades. A microscopic critter who are also known as "moss piglets". They have been put through the harshest enviroments (for science) such as "being bathed in boiling-hot water, shot out of guns, exposed to extreme ultraviolet radiation and even crash landed on the moon even though it was accidental."
The way that they are able to do this is by removing all water from themselves, curling into a ball with their head retracted and generate compounds that seal and protect the structure of their cells. They are then able to revive themselves in the presence of water. Scientist even helped revive some tardigrades that were thought to be in a deep freeze for 30 years!
